Start with the symptom: check power, controls, cycle selection and the door if the dryer will not start; check the selected cycle and the heat supply if it tumbles without heating; and use a displayed code as a clue rather than a repair instruction. The right steps depend on whether your Maytag dryer is electric or gas and on its model, so keep the model-specific manual handy.
Before troubleshooting: find your model and choose the symptom
Maytag does not provide one universal fix or reset procedure for every dryer. Check the model number and consult its manual for control-lock instructions, cycle behavior, and code-specific guidance. Then follow the branch below that matches what the dryer is doing.
- It will not start: check power, settings, controls and the door latch.
- It runs but does not heat: check the cycle and the appropriate electric or gas supply.
- A code appears: use Maytag’s guidance for that code and the manual for your model.
- It knocks or rattles: check whether the dryer is level and whether anything is leaning against it.
If the dryer will not start
Work through these external checks before assuming an internal part has failed. Maytag’s guidance notes that controls and cycle behavior vary by model.
- Check power. Make sure the dryer is plugged in and check the circuit breaker or fuse. If breaker or fuse problems continue, Maytag advises consulting a licensed electrician.
- Turn off Control Lock. The procedure differs by model; use the manual rather than guessing at a button combination.
- Select an operating cycle. Some models will not run when a non-running option is selected.
- Close the door fully. Make sure it latches, and check that clothing or packing material is not blocking the latch.
- Press and hold Start if required. Depending on the model, hold Start, Push to Start, or Hold to Start for two to five seconds.
- Dry the controls if they are not responding. Maytag notes that a wet finger or control panel can prevent touch-sensitive controls from registering.
If the dryer still does not start, consult the manual for its model-specific instructions. Avoid opening the appliance or replacing a part based only on the no-start symptom.

If the dryer runs but does not heat
First distinguish a no-heat condition from slow drying. A cycle designed not to heat will not produce warm air: Maytag Product Help states, “The Air Only cycle or Air/Fluff Only does not add heat to the dryer at any time during the cycle.”
- Choose a heated cycle. To check for heat, Maytag recommends running the empty dryer on a heated timed cycle for five minutes, then checking inside for heat.
- For an electric dryer, check both dryer breakers. The motor and heating element use separate sides of the supply, so the drum can turn even when one side has tripped. Maytag says electric dryers require 240 volts and a 30-amp circuit. If supply voltage is inadequate or wiring needs attention, use a qualified electrician rather than working on the wiring yourself.
- For a gas dryer, check the gas supply. Confirm the dryer is connected to gas and that its shutoff valve is open. Maytag describes the open position as parallel to the gas pipe.
If the dryer does produce heat but takes too long to dry, investigate airflow and venting rather than treating it as a no-heat fault. Maytag identifies its dryer vent testing kit, part W11224254, as a tool for assessing vent-system performance and airflow. Confirm compatibility with your model before buying it.

If an error code appears
A code narrows down what the control has detected; it does not necessarily tell you to replace a specific part. Maytag says an alternating F# E# code indicates a problem that requires service. For other codes, check the manual for your exact model.

If the dryer knocks or rattles
Maytag’s noise guidance lists several external conditions that can cause knocking or rattling:
- The dryer is not level.
- A leveling leg is missing.
- An item is leaning against the dryer.
Check these conditions first. If the noise continues or is different from a knock or rattle, the cited guidance does not establish its cause; consult your model manual or contact service support.
