To find a saved Remote Desktop username in Windows 10, open Credential Manager, select Windows Credentials, and expand the entry for the remote computer. You can also run cmdkey /list to list stored credential targets and usernames. Windows does not provide a supported way to display a saved RDP password as plain text; if you do not know it, obtain or reset the remote account’s password and replace the saved credential.

Find saved Remote Desktop credentials in Credential Manager

Remote Desktop credentials are normally stored under Windows Credentials, not Web Credentials.

  1. Select the Search box on the Windows 10 taskbar.
  2. Type Credential Manager.
  3. Select Credential Manager Control panel from the results.
  4. Select Windows Credentials.
  5. Look for an entry matching the remote computer’s name, IP address, or Remote Desktop connection.
  6. Expand the matching entry to view the stored username.

Credential Manager lets you identify, update, or delete a stored entry. It does not provide a supported option to show a saved RDP password. If you do not know the password, obtain it from the account owner, reset the remote account’s password, or delete the old credential and enter a known password.

List stored credentials with Command Prompt

You can list saved usernames and credential targets without opening Control Panel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.
  2. Run cmdkey /list.

The output shows stored credential targets and usernames, but not stored passwords. Look for a target matching the remote computer name or address. For example, the target might be Server01, a fully qualified computer name, or an IP address.

Command Purpose
cmdkey /list Lists stored credential targets and usernames
cmdkey /delete:Server01 Deletes the credential whose target is Server01
cmdkey /delete /ras Deletes the stored remote-access credential set
cmdkey /add:Server01 /user:DOMAIN\jdoe Adds a credential and prompts for its password if /pass is omitted

Remove an old RDP credential and enter a new one

If the Windows account password changed but Remote Desktop keeps trying the old saved password, remove the old credential so you can enter the current one.

Option 1: Remove it in Credential Manager

  1. Open Credential Manager from taskbar search.
  2. Select Windows Credentials.
  3. Expand the entry for the remote computer.
  4. Select Remove.
  5. Open Remote Desktop Connection and connect to the same computer.
  6. Enter the current username and password when prompted.
  7. Enable Remember me only if you want Windows to save the new credential.

Option 2: Remove it with cmdkey

First inspect the exact target name by running cmdkey /list. Then substitute that target in the delete command, for example cmdkey /delete:Server01. The target must match the stored target. If the entry uses an IP address rather than Server01, delete the address instead. To remove the stored remote-access entry documented by Microsoft, run cmdkey /delete /ras.

After deleting the entry, reconnect with Remote Desktop Connection and provide the current credentials.

Add a known RDP credential without putting the password in the command

You can save a username and have Windows request the password interactively by running cmdkey /add:Server01 /user:DOMAIN\jdoe. When you omit /pass:, cmdkey prompts for the password instead of exposing it in the command line. Replace Server01 and DOMAIN\jdoe with the actual target and account.

Find the username used for Remote Desktop

The saved username is visible when you expand the matching Windows Credential in Credential Manager. You can also check the Remote Desktop Connection window:

  1. Search Windows for Remote Desktop Connection and open it.
  2. Enter the remote computer’s name or IP address in Computer.
  3. Select Show Options.
  4. Check the value in the User name field.

The built-in client is %windir%\system32\mstsc.exe. You can also press Windows+R, type mstsc.exe, and press Enter.

Do not confuse the local username with the remote username

The username on your Windows 10 computer is not automatically the username that can sign in to another PC. Remote Desktop requires an account authorized on the remote computer.

To identify the account currently logged on to your local PC, run whoami. It commonly returns a value such as DOMAIN\username. This identifies the locally logged-on account; it does not reveal the password or prove that the account is authorized to connect by RDP to another computer.

Account type Possible format
Local account on the remote PC username
Domain account DOMAIN\username
Directory or service identity username@domain.com

Members of the remote PC’s Administrators group can connect automatically. Other accounts must be allowed through Select users that can remotely access this PC on the remote computer.

PINs are not RDP passwords

A Windows Hello PIN is tied to the local device and is not the same as the account password. If Remote Desktop asks for a password, do not assume your local Windows Hello PIN is the password accepted by the remote computer. Use the password for the authorized account on the remote PC, or ask the administrator to reset it.

Open and configure Remote Desktop Connection

On the connecting Windows 10 computer:

  1. Search the taskbar for Remote Desktop Connection.
  2. Open the application.
  3. Enter the remote PC’s name or IP address in Computer.
  4. Select Show Options if you need to specify the username or control credential saving.
  5. Select Connect.
  6. Enter the authorized remote account’s password.

The remote host must be running Windows 10 Pro for standard incoming Remote Desktop connections. The client device can run Windows 10 Home or another operating system. Windows 10 Home cannot act as the standard incoming RDP host, but it can be used to connect to a supported Windows Pro host.

Verify the remote PC is configured as an RDP host

On the remote Windows 10 computer:

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > About.
  2. Under Windows specifications, check that Edition is Windows Pro.
  3. Open Start > Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
  4. Turn on Enable Remote Desktop.
  5. Select Confirm.
  6. Record the value shown under PC name.

Use that PC name in Remote Desktop Connection. If the name does not work, try the remote computer’s IP address. Incorrect name resolution is a common problem, particularly on home networks.

What to check when the credentials still fail

Symptom Likely check
Windows repeatedly rejects a password after it was changed Delete the old entry in Credential Manager or run cmdkey /delete:<targetname>, then enter the current password.
The computer name cannot be found Try the remote PC’s IP address and verify name resolution.
The username is accepted but access is denied Confirm that the account is authorized for Remote Desktop on the remote PC.
The connection times out Check that the remote PC is powered on, reachable, and that the firewall allows Remote Desktop.
The network connection is refused Verify Remote Desktop is enabled and that the host is listening on the expected port.

Remote Desktop normally uses TCP port 3389, although an administrator may have changed the port. The selected port must be allowed through the relevant firewall.

The Microsoft Store Remote Desktop app for Windows reached end of support on May 27, 2025 and is no longer available for installation or download. For a normal PC-to-PC connection, use the built-in Remote Desktop Connection client, mstsc.exe. Microsoft distinguishes newer Windows App connections for services such as Windows 365 and Azure Virtual Desktop from ordinary remote-PC connections.

FAQ

Can I view my saved Remote Desktop password in Windows 10?

No. Credential Manager can show and manage the saved credential, but Microsoft’s cmdkey documentation states that stored passwords are not displayed. If the password is unknown, obtain or reset the remote account password, then remove the old saved entry and sign in with the new password.

Where are RDP credentials stored?

They are normally listed under Credential Manager > Windows Credentials, not Web Credentials. You can also inspect saved targets and usernames by running cmdkey /list.

How do I force Remote Desktop to ask for the password again?

Delete the matching entry in Credential Manager, or run cmdkey /list followed by cmdkey /delete:<targetname>. Reopen Remote Desktop Connection and connect again.

Does my Windows Hello PIN work for Remote Desktop?

Not necessarily. A Windows Hello PIN is not the same as the remote Windows account password. Use the password for an account authorized on the remote PC.

What username should I enter for RDP?

Use the account authorized on the remote PC. Depending on the account, the format may be username, DOMAIN\username, or username@domain.com. The username of the local PC is not automatically valid on the remote computer.

Can Windows 10 Home connect to a Windows 10 Pro computer with Remote Desktop?

Yes. Windows 10 Home can be the client that connects to a supported Windows 10 Pro host. Windows 10 Home cannot serve as the standard incoming RDP host.

The Bottom Line

To find the saved RDP username, open Credential Manager from taskbar search, choose Windows Credentials, and expand the matching computer entry. To list entries from a terminal, run cmdkey /list. Windows does not support displaying a saved RDP password as plaintext; delete the old credential and enter a known current password or reset the authorized account on the remote PC.
