You cannot download an official Xbox app package for Linux. Microsoft’s current Xbox PC app download is an XboxInstaller.exe file for Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or later. Microsoft does not provide a Linux .deb, .rpm, Flatpak, Snap, or AppImage version.
On Linux, the supported way to access Xbox games is Xbox Cloud Gaming in a supported browser. This streams compatible games from Microsoft’s servers rather than installing the Windows Xbox app or downloading PC Game Pass games locally.
What Microsoft officially provides
Microsoft separates its Xbox products into two different experiences:
| Service | What it does | Linux status |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox app for PC | Downloads and manages PC games, provides the Microsoft Store tab, integrates with Xbox Game Bar, and supports PC Game Pass. | Windows only. Microsoft requires Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher. |
| Xbox Cloud Gaming | Streams supported console games through a web browser. | Usable on Linux through a supported browser, where the service is available. |
The official Xbox PC app page links to the XboxInstaller.exe download. It does not offer a Linux installer. Microsoft’s Linux software repository also lists products such as .NET, PowerShell, Defender for Endpoint, SQL Server, and Intune, but not the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, or PC Game Pass.

How to use Xbox on Linux through the browser
The following method requires no terminal command and no Windows compatibility layer.
- Install or open a supported browser. Microsoft’s current examples include Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Safari. On Linux, use Edge, Chrome, or Chromium.
- Go to xbox.com/play.
- Select Sign in and log in with your Microsoft account.
- Browse the Play, Browse Games, Cloud games, or Free-to-Play games sections.
- Select a game that supports cloud play, then choose Play or Play now.
- Connect a compatible controller by Bluetooth or USB when the game requires one.
Some supported games offer Xbox touch controls, but touch controls are mainly useful on touchscreen devices. A USB or Bluetooth controller is the more reliable choice on a Linux desktop.
Do you need Game Pass?
Not for every title. Microsoft says that selected free-to-play games, including Fortnite, can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Other cloud games require a compatible Game Pass plan or ownership of a cloud-playable game.
Microsoft’s current cloud-gaming page lists these Game Pass plans:
| Plan | Cloud gaming shown by Microsoft? | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Essential | Yes | The available catalog and features vary. |
| Premium | Yes | Only supported games can be streamed. |
| Ultimate | Yes | It does not turn every PC Game Pass title into a cloud title. |
Plan names and benefits can change. Check the game listing and the current Xbox Cloud Gaming page before subscribing. A game included in PC Game Pass is not automatically available for cloud streaming. The title must be enabled for cloud play, and catalog availability can vary by region, plan, platform, and time.

Internet and hardware requirements
Cloud gaming sends video from Microsoft’s servers to your browser and sends your controller input back to the service. It therefore depends more on connection quality and latency than on your Linux computer’s gaming hardware.
| Requirement | Microsoft’s guidance |
|---|---|
| Download speed | At least 10 Mbps; some devices may need 20 Mbps for the best quality. |
| Recommended connection | Microsoft’s Xbox Wire guidance recommends at least 20 Mbps for a stable experience. |
| Wi-Fi | Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi rather than congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi when possible. |
| Wired networking | Ethernet is preferable if you experience lag, image quality drops, or disconnects. |
| Controller | Use a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller, unless the game supports touch controls. |
Speed alone does not guarantee a good session. High latency, packet loss, VPN routing, busy Wi-Fi, and downloads running on the same network can cause input delay or blurry video.
What you cannot do with the Linux browser method
Xbox Cloud Gaming is not a Linux version of the Xbox PC app. It does not provide the Windows app’s local PC-game management features.
- It does not install the Xbox PC app.
- It does not install Microsoft Store PC games on your Linux filesystem.
- It does not make every PC Game Pass game streamable.
- It does not replace Windows Gaming Services.
- It does not make a Windows-only download license function as a Linux-native game installation.
The browser service streams supported console versions from Microsoft’s servers. Your saves and other service features are handled by the cloud service, subject to the limitations of streaming and the selected game.
Why common Linux installation commands do not work
Adding Microsoft’s Linux repository
Microsoft’s Linux repository is not an Xbox repository. Its documented setup commands install repository configuration so that you can install Microsoft products that are actually published for Linux. They do not add the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Gaming Services, or PC Game Pass.

There is therefore no valid official command such as:
- apt install xbox-app
- dnf install xbox-app
- flatpak install for an Xbox app
- snap install xbox
These commands do not correspond to a current official Microsoft Linux package. Do not substitute an unrelated package with a similar name and assume it is Microsoft’s Xbox app.

Wine, Bottles, Lutris, and Proton can run many Windows games and some Win32 applications. They do not provide a supported installation path for the current Xbox PC app, Microsoft Store, Windows Gaming Services, or local PC Game Pass downloads on Linux.
Downloading XboxInstaller.exe and opening it with Wine is not the same as having a supported Linux installation. The installer and its associated Microsoft Store and Gaming Services dependencies are designed for Windows, and failures can occur even when the installer window opens.
Other ways to play Xbox games from Linux
If cloud streaming is not suitable, the practical alternatives are separate from installing the Xbox app:

- PLAY ACROSS EVERY SCREEN — Quickly pair with, play on, and switch between devices including console and PC. Stream games across mobile, gaming handhelds, Smart TVs, and supported VR headsets with XBOX Cloud Gaming.
- Buy Linux-compatible games through Steam: Many games purchased through Steam can run with Proton. This is a Steam and Proton solution, not PC Game Pass installation.
- Stream from an Xbox console: If you own a compatible Xbox console, Xbox Remote Play may let you play its installed games through a supported remote-play method. This is console streaming rather than Xbox Cloud Gaming.
- Use Windows for local PC Game Pass downloads: The official Xbox PC app and its advertised download features require Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or higher.
Choose based on what you need. Cloud Gaming is the direct Linux-friendly Xbox option, while Proton is more appropriate for games bought through Steam and Windows is the supported platform for local Xbox PC app downloads.

Troubleshooting Xbox Cloud Gaming on Linux
- The page will not load: Try a current Chromium-based browser such as Chrome, Edge, or Chromium. Disable extensions that block scripts, cookies, or embedded media, then reload the page.
- There is no Play button: Confirm that the title supports cloud gaming in your region and that your Microsoft account has the required free access, ownership, or Game Pass plan.
- The stream is blurry: Stop downloads and video streams on the network, switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and test again. Microsoft lists 10 Mbps as a minimum and 20 Mbps for some devices and better quality.
- Controls do not respond: Pair the controller before starting the session, try USB instead of Bluetooth, and check whether Linux detects it with the desktop’s Bluetooth or game-controller settings.
- Input feels delayed: Use Ethernet where possible, avoid a VPN, move closer to the wireless access point, and select a regionally available service without unnecessary network routing.
- The game is missing: PC Game Pass inclusion does not guarantee cloud availability. Search the cloud-gaming catalog rather than the PC Game Pass catalog.
Bottom line
There is no official Xbox app download for Linux and no supported apt, dnf, Flatpak, or Snap installation command. Microsoft’s current Xbox PC app is a Windows application distributed as XboxInstaller.exe.
To use Xbox on Linux, open xbox.com/play in Edge, Chrome, or Chromium, sign in, and launch a cloud-enabled game. Use a compatible controller and a connection of at least 10 Mbps, with 20 Mbps and wired Ethernet preferred for a more stable experience.

How do I play Xbox games on Ubuntu or another Linux distribution?
Open xbox.com/play in Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Chromium, sign in, and choose a cloud-enabled game. The service streams the game instead of installing it locally.
Can I play Xbox Cloud Gaming without Game Pass?
Selected free-to-play games, such as Fortnite, can be streamed with a free Microsoft account in supported regions. Other games require a compatible Game Pass plan or ownership of a cloud-playable title.
Can PC Game Pass games be downloaded on Linux?
Not through the official Xbox PC app. The app and its local download features require Windows. Also, a game being included in PC Game Pass does not guarantee that it is available through Xbox Cloud Gaming.
What browser works for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Linux?
Use a current supported browser such as Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Chromium. Microsoft’s cloud-gaming instructions describe a browser route rather than a Linux desktop application.
