Installed RAM is your computer’s memory capacity, not the amount currently in use or the space available for files.
Check how much RAM is installed on Windows
- Right-click Start and choose Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Under Device specifications, find the amount of RAM installed.
This built-in route applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. For a broader hardware and system inventory, search for and open msinfo32 (System Information).
Check installed RAM and current memory use on a Mac
- Open Activity Monitor.
- Click the Memory tab.
- Read Physical Memory for the installed RAM capacity.
To see how much memory the Mac is using now, check Memory Used on the same screen. Activity Monitor also reports memory pressure, app memory, wired memory, compressed memory, cached files, and swap used.
Open the Mac’s detailed system report
For a wider hardware report, go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > About > System Report. You can also hold Option while opening the Apple menu, then choose System Information.

Check installed RAM on a Chromebook
- Open the browser and enter
chrome://system/in the address bar. - Find Memory_spd_info and expand it.
- Look for Size_MB, which Dell identifies as the installed memory value.
These steps are documented by Dell, so the field or interface may differ on other Chromebook models. If you do not see it, consult the Chromebook maker’s instructions for your exact model.

Installed RAM, current use, and storage are different
- Installed RAM is the computer’s memory capacity. On a Mac, Activity Monitor labels this Physical Memory.
- Current memory use changes as apps and system processes run. On a Mac, use Memory Used and Memory Pressure to inspect it.
- Storage is space for files and apps on a drive. Windows reports it under Settings > System > Storage, not on the About page’s RAM listing.
