In the classic Hal Jordan origin, Abin Sur’s dying power ring seeks a successor for his sector and selects Hal. The choice is tied to willpower and the ability to face fear—but Green Lantern stories do not use one universal selection rule across every continuity.
Why did Abin Sur’s ring choose Hal Jordan?
Abin Sur, a member of the Green Lantern Corps, is mortally injured and needs someone to take his ring and protect his sector. DC’s Green Lantern character profile describes Abin Sur entrusting those duties to Hal Jordan. The ring’s green energy is associated with willpower, and DC’s retrospective on the origin says Hal was chosen for his strong willpower, a quality needed to operate it: DC’s Green Lantern retrospective.
The familiar origin appears in Showcase #22, Hal Jordan’s debut. DC’s 2024 solicitation for its facsimile edition describes Abin Sur seeking someone “who is born without fear” and choosing test pilot Hal: DC’s Showcase #22 facsimile solicitation. Read alongside the willpower explanation, this portrays the ring as looking for a worthy successor able to act in the face of danger—not simply someone with a particular job or background.
Does a Green Lantern have to be unafraid?
“Born without fear” is language used to describe the classic origin, but it should not be taken as a rule that every Lantern never experiences fear. Later Green Lantern stories emphasize the ability to overcome fear. In a 2016 DC interview, writer Sam Humphries described the ring as choosing someone for “your ability to overcome great fear,” and noted that the person’s life experiences matter to that characterization: DC’s interview with Sam Humphries.

Jessica Cruz is one example of that later emphasis. DC presents her courage in living with anxiety and continuing after trauma as central to her story and to earning a Green Lantern ring: DC’s Jessica Cruz feature. The point is resilience in the face of fear, not a claim that a Lantern is incapable of feeling it.
Was Hal the only person Abin Sur’s ring could have chosen?
No. DC’s account of the origin identifies Guy Gardner as another person Abin Sur’s ring might have selected. A separate DC feature says Guy nearly inherited the ring, but Hal was closer when Abin Sur needed a successor: DC’s Green Lantern retrospective and DC’s Guy Gardner feature.

Guy later became a Lantern through a different path: Hal and the Guardians chose him as a substitute, and he eventually served full-time after the Corps accepted that Sector 2814 could have more than one Lantern. That history shows that ring selection is not always the only route into the Corps.

No. The selection explanation depends on the continuity or adaptation. The mainline origin presents a ring seeking a successor and ties Hal’s choice to willpower and fear-facing character. Other versions change the mechanism:

- Green Lantern: Earth One: DC says the rings in this continuity do not choose their bearers; anyone who gets one can use it, while training and practice affect how effectively they do so. See DC’s Earth One explanation.
- Green Lantern: First Flight: The animated film describes heroes as selected for the strength and will to control their rings. That is the film’s framing, not a single rule for all comics: DC’s First Flight feature.
So, for the familiar Hal Jordan story, the short explanation is that Abin Sur’s ring seeks a successor and finds Hal’s willpower and capacity to confront fear suitable. In another continuity, a ring may work differently—or may not choose its bearer at all.
