Display glasses use a small display and near-eye optics to send an image to your eyes, where it appears as a virtual screen. The image is not a physical screen floating in the room: the optical design determines how you see it, how much of the real world remains visible, and whether it stays fixed as you move your head.
How do display glasses work?
A display or optical engine creates image light. Lenses, reflectors, or a waveguide then direct that light toward your eyes so you perceive an image at a distance. In an optical see-through design, light from the surroundings also reaches your eyes; how much remains visible depends on the product’s optical arrangement. RayNeo describes an optical engine and waveguide in its explanation of the technology (RayNeo’s overview), while a University of Rochester repository paper surveys several near-eye display architectures, including birdbath and waveguide designs (University of Rochester repository).
Manufacturers use labels such as “AR glasses” and “XR glasses” for products that can work quite differently. To understand a specific pair, look at its optics, what the wearer can see around the image, how it connects to a source, and whether it tracks movement—not just its category label.
Birdbath optics and waveguides: what is the difference?
These are two ways of routing image light to the eye. Neither architecture is universally better; the design involves trade-offs, and the cited sources do not provide standardized cross-product measurements that would support a blanket ranking.

| Architecture | How it routes image light | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Birdbath | Folded reflective optics direct image light toward the eye. | It is one near-eye optical arrangement; the label alone does not establish image quality or comfort. |
| Waveguide | Light travels within a lens-like substrate and is extracted toward the eye. | It is a different optical arrangement with its own packaging and optical trade-offs. |
The architecture descriptions are broad categories, not a substitute for product-specific measurements. Sharpness, brightness, usable viewing area, and fit should be assessed for the particular model.
What does FOV mean on display glasses?
Field of view (FOV) is the angular width of the image visible to the wearer. A larger advertised FOV can indicate a broader image, but it does not by itself tell you how sharp the edges are, how comfortable the image is, how much of the image stays visible as the glasses shift, or how much real-world view remains.

| RayNeo GT Series | 59° | RayNeo’s product specification, accessed in 2026; not an independent test. Source |
| VITURE The Beast | Up to 58° | VITURE’s product/academy specification, accessed in 2026; not an independent test. Source |
These figures are model-specific manufacturer claims. Do not treat them as a direct comparison unless the manufacturers use matching measurement methods; the cited specifications do not establish that they do.
Likewise, RayNeo’s Air 3s product listing advertises a “201-inch” virtual screen. That is a manufacturer presentation, not the size of a physical panel in front of you. An apparent screen size depends on viewing-distance assumptions, so the number should not be read as a like-for-like physical-screen measurement (RayNeo Air 3s product page).

- YOUR PRIVATE 147” BIG SCREEN, ANYWHERE — Plug the a01+ into your phone, tablet, handheld, or laptop and a giant 147” screen appears in front of you—for movies, gaming, or getting work done on the couch, on a flight, or in bed. A true portable display you wear, in a soda-can-sized 210g case that drops in your pocket.
- ALWAYS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU — The screen follows your view with smooth, stabilized tracking and stays centered as you look around—nothing to anchor or set up, and no drift to reset. Press play and your big screen is simply there.
- 62G — LIGHT ENOUGH TO FORGET — At just 62g, with three nose-pad sizes and flexible temples, the a01+ stays comfortable through a long movie or flight, even lying down.
- LOOKS LIKE SUNGLASSES, NOT A GADGET — A slim, sunglasses-style frame with a signature semi-transparent chassis and neon logo—light and low-profile enough to actually wear out.
- WORKS WITH YOUR USB-C GEAR — No Battery to Charge — Connects and powers over a single USB-C DisplayPort cable: iPhone 15/16/17, iPad, DP-capable Android phones, Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Mac and PC. Nintendo Switch/Switch 2 and older (Lightning) iPhones need an adapter. For long phone sessions, add the XREAL Hub to charge and watch at once.
Do display glasses track your head?
Some do, but “tracking” can refer to different capabilities. Three-degrees-of-freedom (3DoF) tracking follows rotation: looking up or down, turning left or right, and tilting your head. Software can use those movements to adjust the virtual screen relative to your orientation. Six-degrees-of-freedom (6DoF) tracking also detects translation through space, allowing the system to respond when you move your position.
Tracking depends on the product and may rely on sensors in the glasses, a connected device, or software. VITURE describes 3DoF for its product material; XREAL describes 6DoF support for a separate product. Those examples should not be generalized to every model (VITURE product information; XREAL Beam information).

What should you check before choosing display glasses?
Compare the specific model and your intended source device. Manufacturer category names and headline specifications do not answer these practical questions.
- Optical architecture and real-world view: Find out whether the product uses birdbath optics, a waveguide, or another arrangement, and whether it is optical see-through. Check how much of your surroundings remain visible.
- FOV and image usability: Separate advertised FOV from independently measured FOV. Look for evidence about edge sharpness, the usable eye box, fit, and comfort; a single angle does not establish these qualities.
- Image specifications: Compare resolution and brightness only when the measurement method and conditions are stated. The cited product specifications do not establish standardized independent results across brands.
- Tracking: Check whether the exact model supports 3DoF, 6DoF, or neither, and whether the capability depends on an external device or software.
- Connection and source compatibility: Verify whether the glasses require video over USB-C DisplayPort and whether your exact phone, computer, or console supports that output. A USB-C connector alone does not prove video output. RayNeo specifically advises Air 3s buyers to check for DisplayPort over USB-C (Air 3s compatibility information).
- Adapters: Confirm that an adapter or hub is supported for both the source device and the glasses. A generic USB-C adapter is not validated just because both products have USB-C ports.
- Prescription support: Check the model’s supported prescription options and whether any insert or frame fits that exact pair. VITURE lists a separate prescription lens frame for Pro 2; that does not establish fit or availability for other models (VITURE Pro 2 product information).
- Weight and comfort: Check model-specific fit and weight information, and consider whether you can wear the glasses comfortably for your intended session. The sources cited here do not establish standardized cross-brand comfort results.
How to read product claims without over-comparing
Manufacturer pages can explain a product’s design, connection requirements, and stated specifications. They are not independent comparative tests. Treat figures such as FOV or virtual-screen size as claims about the named model, and compare products only where the measurement methods and conditions are clear. Current specifications, accessory support, and availability can change; verify them on the manufacturer’s page for the exact model before relying on them.
