An authorized administrator can use a device management system to send a command that locks an enrolled company device, removes work data, or resets the device. The result depends on how the device is enrolled and whether it can receive the command: a lock preserves data, a work-data removal targets organizational information, and a full wipe erases personal as well as company data.
What remote lock, retire, and wipe actually do
These commands have different effects. In Microsoft Intune, the relevant actions are remote lock, retire, and wipe; other providers may use different labels or implement different scopes.
| Action | Effect in the documented Intune behavior | Typical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Remote lock | Locks the managed device. The user must enter the existing passcode or PIN to continue. | Restricts access without intentionally deleting the device’s data. Microsoft cautions that without a passcode or PIN, the screen may simply turn off while the device remains accessible. Microsoft Intune: Remote lock |
| Retire | Removes organizational data and settings while leaving personal data intact. | Designed to remove company-managed content without factory-resetting the whole device. The precise outcome depends on the enrollment and platform. Microsoft Intune: Wipe, retire, or manually unenroll devices |
| Wipe | Restores the device to factory settings, removing personal and organizational data, apps, and configurations. | Destructive: personal content may be lost along with company data. Microsoft Intune: Wipe, retire, or manually unenroll devices |
A lock is a way to restrict access; it is not a substitute for a screen passcode policy. Retire is a selective-removal option in the documented Intune scenario. Wipe is a broader reset, so administrators should confirm its scope and consequences before sending it.
How enrollment determines what IT can control
Management is not one-size-fits-all. The enrollment model defines whether the system manages the entire device or a separated work environment, and therefore influences which actions are available and what data they affect.

Android Work Profile
On a personal Android device with a Work Profile, work apps and data are separated from personal apps and data. Google describes the profile as a way for an organization to manage the work environment, and says EMM providers support remotely locking and wiping that profile. A work-profile removal is not the same as a whole-device factory reset. Google Android Enterprise: What is a work profile?
Company-owned and fully managed devices
Company-owned devices can be enrolled for broader management, while dedicated-device enrollment serves specific company-owned use cases. The management mode matters: do not assume that a command available for a fully managed device has the same scope or availability on a personally owned device with a Work Profile. Verify the actual configuration
Before telling an employee what IT can erase, check the device’s ownership, enrollment type, operating-system support, and the management provider’s behavior. In a bring-your-own-device setup, explain the boundary between work and personal data based on the device’s actual configuration rather than promising that every personal setup behaves identically.
What Android Enterprise Lost Mode can do
Lost Mode is a specific Android Enterprise capability, not a universal remote-lock feature. Google documents it for supported company-owned enrollment modes: Work Profile on company-owned devices running Android 13 or later, and fully managed devices running Android 11 or later. The device’s EMM must use the Android Management API and expose the feature.

When available and activated, Lost Mode locks the supported device, blocks access beyond the lock screen, can display an administrator message, and reports location to the EMM after activation conditions are met. These conditions and enrollment requirements mean an administrator should verify support in the specific EMM and on the target device before relying on it. Google Android Management API: Lost Mode

A remote command must reach the enrolled device before it can take effect. Microsoft says Intune actions take effect immediately on an online device; an offline device receives the action at its next check-in. The Intune admin center also provides action status, which administrators should inspect to verify progress rather than treating a sent or queued command as proof of completion. For a device that is powered off or otherwise unable to check in, the available documentation does not establish that a pending command has already secured or erased it. Avoid describing a remote wipe as guaranteed forensic-grade data destruction: the cited product documentation establishes a factory-reset action, not a universal guarantee about recovery of data or completion while a device is unreachable.

How administrators should choose an action
- Confirm the device and its enrollment. Identify whether it is company-owned or personal, its management mode, platform and supported OS version, and what the EMM actually manages.
- Choose the narrowest action that meets the need. Use a lock to restrict access while preserving data; use retire or work-profile removal when the goal is to remove organizational content; use a full wipe only when resetting the whole device is intended.
- Check prerequisites. For Intune remote lock, ensure a screen passcode or PIN is configured. For Android Lost Mode, confirm the supported Android version and company-owned enrollment type, and that the EMM exposes the feature.
- Send the command through the management console. The precise UI path varies by provider and device platform; use the action provided for that device’s enrollment rather than assuming a similarly named command has identical effects elsewhere.
- Review the action status and follow up. If the device is offline, the command may await its next check-in. Do not tell the user a wipe or lock has completed until the console reports a status supporting that conclusion.
Questions to resolve before promising a result
- What data is in scope? Whole device, organizational data only, or a work profile?
- Does this enrollment support the action? Capabilities can vary by ownership model, management mode, platform, and OS version.
- Can the device receive the command? Check connectivity and the provider’s reported action status.
- What happens afterward? A lock preserves data, selective removal can preserve personal use, and a full wipe resets the device and removes data and configurations.
