The spell’s Components entry tells you what the caster must provide. An Intelligence (Arcana) check, by contrast, is for recalling magical lore—not a roll required every time someone casts a spell.
This guide follows the 2024 Basic Rules. The 2014 rules are identified separately where they help explain a difference; use the edition your table is playing.
How spellcasting works
A character can cast a spell when a class feature or another rule gives them access to it and they satisfy the spell’s casting requirements. Those requirements are in the relevant class feature and the spell’s description. For components, check the spell’s Components entry: it specifies whether the spell needs Verbal (V), Somatic (S), Material (M), or a combination. Under the 2024 rules, a caster who cannot provide a required component cannot cast that spell.
“Arcane magic” also has a fictional explanation, but that description is not a separate casting procedure. The 2014 rules evoke spellcasters manipulating invisible strands of raw magic; treat that as flavor, while the spell and class rules determine what happens at the table. The 2024 Wizard description identifies the wizard as a student of arcane magic and gives that class its own spellcasting rules and spellbook. Other spellcasters may have different class mechanics.

The 2024 Player’s Handbook has a Chapter 7 devoted to spells, including gaining and casting spells.
What V, S, and M components require
| Component | What the caster needs | Practical limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Verbal (V) | Esoteric words spoken in a normal voice. | A gag or magical silence prevents casting a spell with a Verbal component under the 2024 rules. |
| Somatic (S) | Gestures made with at least one hand. | If the caster cannot use a hand to make the gestures, they cannot provide this component. |
| Material (M) | The material specified by the spell, or an eligible substitute such as a component pouch or spellcasting focus. | The caster needs a free hand to access the material. A focus works only when a feature permits it to substitute. Check the spell for listed costs or consumption. |
The 2024 rules say a material component is not consumed unless the spell says it is. A spellcasting focus or component pouch can stand in for some material components, but not automatically for every one: follow the spell text and the rule that allows the substitution. If a material has a listed cost or the spell consumes it, pay particular attention to that wording.

The 2014 Basic Rules likewise do not let a focus or component pouch replace a costly component, and a consumed component must be supplied for each casting. See the edition-specific 2014 Spellcasting rules; do not assume their wording governs a game using the 2024 rules.
What an Intelligence (Arcana) check is for
Arcana is an Intelligence skill for recalling lore about magic. In the 2024 rules, its scope includes spells, magic items, and the planes. The DM calls for an Arcana check when a character’s knowledge of such a subject is relevant; the check is not a universal step in casting a spell.

The 2014 Basic Rules give the skill a broader description: “Your Intelligence (Arcana) check measures your ability to recall lore about spells, magic items, eldritch symbols, magical traditions, the planes of existence, and the inhabitants of those planes.” That is the wording of the rules, not a quotation attributed to an individual speaker. The 2014 ability-score rules and the 2024 rules on playing the game provide the edition-specific skill context.

- Can the character cast this spell? Check whether a class feature or other rule grants access, then follow the spell’s casting requirements, including its listed components.
- What does the character know about this magic? The DM may call for an Intelligence (Arcana) check to recall relevant lore. That check does not provide missing components or replace the spellcasting rules.
For the 2024 wizard’s class-specific rules, consult Character Classes in the 2024 Basic Rules. The applicable class feature and spell description—not the general idea of “arcane magic”—settle the casting question.
