Custom fonts affect an image only when the renderer can load and use them before it shapes and rasterizes the text. Declare the font with @font-face or the FontFace API, wait for its loading promise, set the intended weight, style, size and family, measure the text, and draw or capture only after the font is ready. If capture starts earlier, the browser may render a fallback face; its glyphs, widths and line breaks can permanently change the output pixels.
What happens between a font file and an image?
Image rendering is a pipeline, not a single “font” operation. The renderer first resolves the requested family, weight, style and source. CSS @font-face maps a family name to a remote URL, a local installation or both; a JavaScript font API can construct the same relationship directly. The browser then opens or downloads the file and checks whether it can be used.
Once usable, the text engine maps Unicode characters to glyphs. Shaping applies language-specific substitutions, ligatures and positioning, while font metrics determine advances, ascent, descent and line placement. The shaped glyph data is passed to a rasterizer such as FreeType or a platform text system. The rasterizer interprets the relevant font tables and outlines, computes pixel coverage and applies choices such as anti-aliasing, hinting, device scale and color management. Those coverage values become the pixels in a canvas, screenshot or PDF.
Loading and rasterizing are different stages. Loading makes the face available; rasterization is the final conversion of its shaped outlines into device pixels. A successful network request does not prove that drawing has used the custom face, and a font that is loaded but assigned the wrong weight can still trigger synthetic styling or another face.

Why screenshots and canvas drawings use a fallback font
The face is still downloading
@font-face declares where a font comes from; it does not, by itself, wait for completion. During the fetch, the browser follows the face’s font-display policy. Depending on the browser and policy, text can be temporarily invisible, shown in a fallback face, or swapped to the custom face later. Google’s font documentation describes the browser downloading CSS first and then downloading the appropriate font format. Chrome documents font-display as the control for this loading and fallback behavior; browser results are not identical.
The renderer never had the font
Managed Chromium instances generally include a limited set of system fonts. If a requested face is not pre-installed and the page does not supply it, Chromium falls back to a similar supported font. A local font on your laptop is therefore not evidence that a cloud screenshot worker can use it.
The family, weight or style does not match
A rule for font-weight: 400 cannot satisfy a request for 700 unless another source is declared. Variable fonts also require a compatible file and correct axis settings. If the CSS asks for an unprovided italic face, the browser may synthesize slanting or select a fallback. Small metric differences alter wrapping and canvas measurements even when the fallback looks visually close.
Cross-origin and format failures
A blocked font request, an invalid MIME type, a corrupt file, a failed certificate, or a format unsupported by the renderer leaves the face unavailable. Check the browser’s network and console logs, and verify that the response is reachable from the actual rendering environment. WOFF2 is a compact web-font format using Brotli compression; provide a supported fallback format when the browsers you target require one.

const canvas = document.querySelector('#card');
const ctx = canvas.getContext('2d');
const face = new FontFace(
'Brand Sans',
'url(https://example.com/fonts/brand-sans.woff2) format("woff2")',
{ weight: '400', style: 'normal', display: 'block' }
);
document.fonts.add(face);
await face.load();
ctx.font = '400 48px "Brand Sans"';
ctx.textBaseline = 'alphabetic';
const text = 'Quarterly results';
const metrics = ctx.measureText(text);
const ascent = metrics.actualBoundingBoxAscent || 0;
const descent = metrics.actualBoundingBoxDescent || 0;
canvas.width = Math.ceil(metrics.width + 80);
canvas.height = Math.ceil(ascent + descent + 80);
const draw = canvas.getContext('2d');
draw.font = '400 48px "Brand Sans"';
draw.textBaseline = 'alphabetic';
draw.fillText(text, 40, 40 + ascent);
Set the canvas dimensions before the final draw because changing width or height resets the rendering context. If you resize for a retina output, multiply the backing-store dimensions by the device scale, then scale the context while retaining the same CSS font size.
Using the document font set
For faces declared in CSS, request the exact descriptor and await readiness:
await document.fonts.load('700 32px "Brand Sans"');
await document.fonts.ready;
if (!document.fonts.check('700 32px "Brand Sans"')) {
throw new Error('Brand Sans 700 is unavailable');
}
ctx.font = '700 32px "Brand Sans"';
ctx.fillText('Ready text', 20, 50);
document.fonts.load() asks for a particular face; document.fonts.ready waits for the document’s font-loading set to settle. Neither repairs a bad URL or a missing weight, so keep the explicit check() for a capture pipeline that must fail rather than silently substitute.

- Declare every required face. Add one
@font-facerule per weight and style, with a stable family name and an appropriate format. - Inject before capture. In an automated browser, add the rule before navigation when possible, or before the page’s text is captured. A Base64
data:source avoids a second origin request; a CDN URL is easier to update. - Wait for the exact face. Run
document.fonts.load()for each weight and style used by the page, then awaitdocument.fonts.ready. - Wait for layout, not only fonts. Lazy images, client-side text and web components can change dimensions after the font is ready. Wait for a meaningful selector, network idle or an application-specific readiness flag.
- Capture at the final scale. Viewport size, device scale factor, hinting and anti-aliasing affect the bitmap. Keep these settings consistent between runs.
- Verify the result. Log the loaded face, inspect computed styles and compare measured widths for a known string. A different width is an early warning that fallback text was drawn.
Example with Playwright
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({
viewport: { width: 1200, height: 800 },
deviceScaleFactor: 1
});
await page.goto('https://example.com/report', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.evaluate(async () => {
await document.fonts.load('400 16px "Brand Sans"');
await document.fonts.load('700 16px "Brand Sans"');
await document.fonts.ready;
if (!document.fonts.check('400 16px "Brand Sans"')) throw new Error('Font failed');
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'report.png', fullPage: true });
await browser.close();
If you control the page, inject the @font-face rule with the browser automation API before goto. If you do not control it, you need a renderer that supports CSS or script injection before its capture step.
Font formats, loading policies and deployment trade-offs
| Choice | Strength | Risk or cost |
|---|---|---|
| Remote WOFF2 | Small transfer and straightforward updates | Network latency, CORS and availability can affect deterministic captures |
Base64 data: source |
Font travels with the injected CSS and avoids a separate fetch | Larger HTML or script payloads and more complicated secret/license handling |
| Locally installed face | No download when the renderer image already contains it | Not portable; cloud workers may not have the same installation |
font-display: block |
Reduces the chance of capturing a fallback during the short block period | Can produce invisible text if the font is slow or unavailable |
font-display: swap |
Text appears quickly with a fallback | A later swap can change wrapping and pixels after an early capture |
Choose the policy according to the product’s tolerance for blank text versus changed text. For archival images and visual regression tests, an explicit readiness wait is more reliable than hoping a display policy finishes before the screenshot.

Metrics and rasterization details that change pixels
Use measureText() after the correct face is loaded. Its width, ascent and descent help you size a canvas and position a baseline without clipping. For multiline text, calculate line boxes using the same font, line-height and wrapping algorithm as the page; a fallback face can create extra lines before you notice a different glyph shape.
Rasterization is sensitive to device scale and placement. Fractional coordinates, hinting and anti-aliasing can make two otherwise identical captures differ by a pixel. Keep the browser version, viewport, device scale, color settings and font files stable when pixel comparison matters. A PDF can preserve text as vectors, but its layout still depends on the same font loading and shaping steps before the PDF is emitted.

- Confirm that the font license permits web embedding, server-side rendering or inclusion in generated images. A desktop license is not automatically a web or image-generation license.
- Serve font files over HTTPS and configure the required cross-origin policy for the renderer’s origin.
- Do not expose private font URLs or API credentials in client-side code. Use authenticated server-side injection when the license or endpoint requires it.
- Pin the file version for reproducible output; an updated font can change metrics even when the family name is unchanged.
Troubleshooting fallback fonts and missing text
The screenshot has the wrong typeface
Inspect the computed font-family, weight and style, then call document.fonts.check() for that exact descriptor. Look for a failed font request, CORS error or unsupported format. Add the missing face or correct the URL, and move the capture after the readiness promise.
Text is clipped or wraps differently
Measure only after loading, and recalculate canvas dimensions after changing the font. Check ascent, descent, line height and device scale. In page screenshots, wait for layout after the font promise; a late swap can reflow content.
The font works locally but not in CI or a cloud service
Assume the remote renderer does not have your installed fonts. Bundle an embeddable web font, inject it before capture, and log the renderer’s network response. A managed Chromium service may offer a documented CSS or Base64 injection mechanism; use it rather than relying on machine-level installation.

The canvas is blank
Confirm that the face promise resolved, the canvas context still exists after resizing, and the text color is visible against the background. A font-display policy that keeps text invisible can also make an early capture appear blank.
Different runs differ by a few pixels
Pin browser and font versions, use a fixed device scale and viewport, avoid fractional layout changes, and keep color-management settings consistent. Distinguish a genuine fallback or reflow from normal anti-aliasing differences before changing thresholds in visual tests.

ScreenshotNeo provides a one-call website screenshot API and MCP server. It can accept a consent banner like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are free, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result.
For a rendered page, call the API and let its browser handle loading:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
const body = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', body));

Frequently Asked Questions
Does loading a font guarantee that every character is available?
No. A loaded face can still lack a particular Unicode character, which then comes from a fallback face. Test representative scripts and symbols, not just the Latin text used in a heading.
Should I convert text to outlines before generating an image?
Usually no. Keep text live when you need selectable PDF text, accessibility or easy edits. Convert only when your pipeline cannot carry the licensed font and you have verified the resulting shapes at the target resolution.
Why can two machines produce different antialiasing with the same font file?
Rasterization depends on browser and operating-system text engines, device scale, hinting and color-management settings. Matching the font file alone does not make pixel output identical.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can a web font be used in a server-generated image without a browser?
Yes, if the server renderer supports the font format and shaping engine and the license permits that use. It must still load and parse the font before shaping and rasterizing glyphs.
