Exchange-rate movements can increase or reduce what that change is worth in your home currency, while dividend withholding, fees and taxes may reduce the amount you ultimately keep. The mechanics are broadly similar across markets, but tax treatment depends on your tax residence, tax year, account type and the security you hold.
Why a share’s local return can differ from yours
A foreign share has a return in its trading currency and a separate result when you translate that return into your home currency. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Investor.gov explains that exchange-rate changes can increase or reduce an international investment’s return; a share can rise in its home market while its translated U.S.-dollar value falls.
To understand your result, separate the main components rather than treating the local share-price change as the whole return:
- The share-price change in the currency in which it trades.
- Dividends or other distributions, including any tax withheld where they originate.
- The exchange-rate change between the trading currency and your home currency, measured over the relevant dates.
- Broker commissions, conversion spreads or fees, and applicable taxes.
- Any tax in your country of residence, reduced only by relief you are eligible to claim.
The timing matters: the exchange rate when you buy may differ from the rate when you sell, and a dividend is generally converted using the rate relevant to its payment or tax-reporting treatment. A local-market gain therefore does not guarantee a positive home-currency return.

How to estimate the return in your home currency
Compare what you put in with what you receive, translating each cash flow at the rate that applies to its date. A useful framework is:
Home-currency result before residence-country tax = translated sale proceeds + translated distributions − translated purchase cost − transaction and conversion costs − source-country withholding.

This is a framework, not a universal tax calculation. Your broker’s displayed return may use its own conventions and may not include every fee or tax. For a meaningful comparison, use matching transaction dates and exchange rates, and check whether the displayed figures include reinvested dividends, withholding and charges.
Do not assume a single conversion rate applies to the entire holding period. For example, a distribution received between purchase and sale is a separate cash flow with its own date. Your tax authority may also require a different conversion method for reporting income, expenses or foreign tax than the one you use to estimate investment performance.

What happens when tax is withheld from a dividend
A foreign company’s dividend may be paid to you after the source country withholds tax. Your country of residence may also tax that income. A foreign tax credit, deduction, treaty rate or refund may reduce the combined burden, but the tax shown on a broker statement is not automatically the amount you can claim or recover. Eligibility can depend on the law, treaty, account and your actual tax liability.
U.S. taxpayers
For U.S. taxpayers, the IRS says the foreign tax credit is intended to reduce double taxation on foreign-source income and is generally limited to the U.S. tax on that income. Eligible taxpayers commonly claim it using Form 1116, although exceptions and limitations apply. A deduction is a separate choice; it is not an additional credit for the same foreign taxes. The amount withheld must meet applicable requirements to qualify.

IRS Publication 514 explains that a tax treaty may limit the source-country rate on a dividend. If you were entitled to a lower treaty rate, tax withheld above that rate may need to be reclaimed from the foreign country; the excess is not necessarily eligible for a U.S. foreign tax credit. Whether a reclaim is available and how to request it depends on the country and your circumstances.
UK taxpayers
For UK taxpayers, HMRC’s International Manual shows that relief on foreign dividends depends on the applicable double taxation agreement and the nature of the foreign tax. In some cases, where a treaty limits withholding, only tax within that treaty limit may be creditable. This is an example of how rules vary, not guidance for taxpayers resident elsewhere.

Canadian taxpayers
For Canadian taxpayers, Canada Revenue Agency guidance addresses the conversion of foreign income taxes claimed for a foreign tax credit. Its approach links the currency conversion for the tax to the rate used for the related income, with specific guidance for investment income subject to withholding. These rules illustrate why a rate or date used in one country should not be treated as a universal rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which exchange rate should you use for tax reporting?
Keep your investment-return estimate separate from your tax return. Tax authorities can prescribe their own conversion dates or methods for income, expenses and foreign tax. IRS Publication 514 (2025) says amounts affecting U.S. tax calculations generally must be translated into U.S. dollars. For foreign taxes paid, the usual rate is the rate on the payment date; for tax withheld in foreign currency, use the withholding date. Under specified conditions, an accrual-basis taxpayer generally uses the average exchange rate for the tax year to which the tax relates. Exceptions apply.
For Canada, the CRA says foreign income taxes used for a foreign tax credit should be converted to Canadian dollars using the same rate used to convert the income. For investment income subject to withholding tax, it identifies the rate applicable on the income receipt date and notes that average monthly or mid-month rates are usually acceptable. This is Canadian guidance, not a rule for other tax residents.
Keep transaction confirmations, dividend statements, withholding records, exchange rates and broker fee details. They can help you reconcile your own return estimate with the figures and conversion method required for tax reporting.
What to check before comparing overseas shares
- Set your perspective. Identify your tax residence, tax year, home currency and account type. A tax-advantaged account or other wrapper may change the treatment.
- Match the dates. Record purchase, sale and dividend dates, along with the exchange rates used for each cash flow.
- Separate gross and net dividends. Check the distribution before withholding, the amount withheld and the cash received.
- Check whether relief is available. Look for the relevant treaty rate, refund route or home-country foreign tax relief, and confirm its conditions and limits.
- Include transaction costs. Account for broker commissions and currency-conversion spreads or fees; they vary by broker, market, instrument and transaction.
- Use the tax authority’s reporting method. Do not assume the rate used for your performance estimate is acceptable for calculating taxable income or creditable foreign tax.
Investor.gov identifies unexpected dividend withholding, higher transaction costs and currency-conversion costs as potential costs or risks of international investing. Their actual amounts depend on the market, investment, broker and transaction, so a reliable estimate needs the charges that apply to your own trades.
