If a probe succeeds, the company says it investigates the gap, deploys a mitigation, and tests again. This is a description of Cloudflare’s internal approach—not a named “AI harness” product or a published, reproducible test system.
How does Cloudflare use AI to test its WAF?
In its account of its security architecture, Cloudflare describes using frontier models to generate attack payloads and vary tactics in response to what an application or its defenses return. The adaptive quality matters: instead of limiting a test to a fixed list of requests, a model can use feedback to choose what to try next. Cloudflare says it directs this testing toward newly launched products, changed application surfaces, and paths it considers likely targets. Cloudflare’s description of its approach does not name the models, publish benchmark results, or explain enough implementation detail to reproduce the testing system.
Model-assisted probes are one input to a broader testing and detection workflow, not a replacement for it. Cloudflare also points to manual red teaming, threat intelligence, observed traffic, proof-of-concept analysis, and signals from its network. Each can help reveal attack behavior or application weaknesses in ways that a model-driven probe alone may not.
What happens when an AI probe gets through?
- Investigate the gap. Cloudflare says a successful probe triggers investigation into why the request passed and what weakness it exposed.
- Develop and deploy a mitigation. The team creates a rule or another mitigation intended to address the gap, then ships it.
- Test again. Cloudflare says it repeats the test to check whether the issue has been closed.
This describes a feedback loop: a probe that succeeds becomes an opportunity to improve the defenses and verify the change. Cloudflare’s published account does not give an attack-success rate or a measured reduction in vulnerabilities, so it cannot establish how often this loop finds or prevents a particular class of exploit.

How do Cloudflare’s WAF, API Shield, and Bot Management work together?
Cloudflare presents these controls as layers with different jobs. The WAF filters requests at the perimeter; API Shield checks API requests against valid request structures; and Bot Management is intended to catch probing behavior. The company’s description is architectural, not an independent comparison of product effectiveness.

Cloudflare describes them as complementary parts of its approach rather than interchangeable controls. Its architecture post does not provide customer-specific configuration guidance.

What are Cloudflare Application Profiles?
Application Profiles are a positive-security capability Cloudflare announced on September 29, 2026. The approach is to learn or define the structure of valid requests, then identify requests that deviate from it. That differs from relying only on a list of known malicious patterns: it gives defenders a model of what legitimate requests should look like.
The announcement discusses Application Profiles in the context of reducing risk from AI-enabled probing, but it is a separate product announcement from Cloudflare’s account of its model-assisted security testing. It does not establish that Application Profiles generated or executed the probes described in that testing workflow. Read Cloudflare’s Application Profiles announcement for its product description.

What Cloudflare’s account does—and does not—establish
The published material explains Cloudflare’s stated testing loop and the roles it assigns to several defenses. It does not identify a product called an “AI harness”; that phrase is shorthand for the model-assisted approach, not a verified product name. The material also does not disclose model names, a reconstructable harness implementation, independent efficacy measurements, or a customer-specific configuration recommendation. The claims about the workflow and products are Cloudflare’s own descriptions.
