Climate change can affect penguins by changing the sea ice they breed on or travel across, the conditions that support prey such as krill, and the weather around nesting sites. The consequences depend on species, colony and season: there is no single response shared by all penguins, and climate is not the only influence on their populations.

Why sea ice matters to penguins

Sea ice is both habitat and part of the food web. Emperor penguins breed on sea ice, so changes in its extent, stability or timing can remove or disrupt the platform a colony needs. Most other Antarctic penguins breed on land, but ice can still affect how adults reach feeding grounds. Sea ice also supports algae that are part of the food system for krill, an important prey item for several penguin species. The British Antarctic Survey’s 2026 Antarctic Peninsula policy brief describes regional warming and sea-ice change; it reports warming on the Peninsula of up to twice the global mean rate of 0.27°C per decade. That is a regional climate figure, not a penguin-specific measurement.

A legacy British Antarctic Survey briefing describes a roughly 40% reduction in western Antarctic Peninsula sea-ice cover over “the last 30 years.” Because that page does not establish a current 30-year measurement window, the figure should be understood in the source’s historical framing, not as a fresh estimate. How changing ice and weather can affect breeding

Emperor penguins: losing or disrupting a breeding platform

Because emperor penguins breed on sea ice, early break-up or insufficient ice can undermine breeding directly. The 2026 BAS policy brief also reports emperor colony failures associated with low sea ice and extreme weather, including flooding of nest sites. These are direct risks to particular colonies, not evidence that every colony fails in every poor-ice year. BAS Antarctic Peninsula policy brief

Adélie penguins: the location of ice matters

For land-breeding Adélie penguins, nearby fast ice can make adults’ trips to open water longer. In an account of an 18-year colony study, the Australian Antarctic Program explains that extensive fast ice near the colony during chick guarding could reduce how often adults fed chicks and contribute to chick loss. In the conditions described, some more distant sea ice within foraging range was associated with better breeding success when nearby fast ice was limited. This 2009 colony account illustrates why “more ice is always better” is not a reliable rule; it is not a current Antarctic-wide trend estimate. Chinstrap penguins: access to the sea near colonies

Chinstraps breed on land and forage close to their colonies. The Australian Antarctic Program reports lower breeding success in years when extensive sea ice persists close to colonies, because it restricts adults’ access to the sea. Australian Antarctic Program: Chinstrap penguin

How climate change can affect food supplies

Krill are a central prey item for many Antarctic penguins. Their early life stages are connected to phytoplankton beneath winter sea ice, so changes in ice and ocean conditions can affect the food web that supports them. BAS describes the sea-ice and ecosystem connection, while NOAA Fisheries identifies krill as important prey for Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins.

A change in prey production does not automatically mean that penguins in a particular colony have less food available. Availability also depends on where prey is, ocean conditions, predator demand and fishing. NOAA’s Antarctic research explicitly examines links among prey production, prey availability, climate variability and the demands of predators and fisheries. The evidence here supports a connected food-web risk, not a claim that climate change alone has caused a specific local krill decline. Penguins do not all rely on the same food. Chinstraps mainly eat krill and fish; Antarctic penguin diets can also include squid and other prey. Species’ different habitat and prey preferences help explain why a shift in ice or prey can affect colonies in different ways. Australian Antarctic Program: Chinstrap penguin; BAS: Penguin foraging in a warming ocean

Why impacts differ among species and colonies

Species or group Breeding habitat Relevant climate-sensitive link
Emperor penguin Sea ice Ice loss or early break-up can disrupt breeding habitat; flooding and low ice have been linked to colony failures in the BAS policy brief.
Adélie penguin Land Local ice layout can change the distance adults travel to open water and how often they feed chicks; the described result is colony- and condition-specific.
Chinstrap penguin Land Persistent extensive ice near colonies can impede access to the sea; diet includes mainly krill and fish.
Gentoo penguin Land NOAA includes gentoo penguins in research on seabirds, krill and changing environmental conditions; the sources cited here do not establish a comparable colony-specific breeding response.

What is known about penguin survival?

Penguin population outlooks must be stated by species. In a report dated 9 April 2026, the British Antarctic Survey said the IUCN Red List had moved emperor penguins from Near Threatened to Endangered, identifying climate change—particularly early sea-ice break-up and loss—as the primary driver. The same report says the emperor population is projected to halve by the 2080s. This is a projection for emperor penguins, not for penguins as a whole, and it is a future estimate rather than a count of losses already observed. BAS report on the IUCN Red List reassessment

Monitoring helps scientists track breeding success, population trends and the environmental conditions around colonies. NOAA studies Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins in relation to krill and changing conditions, while BAS describes penguin monitoring as a way to observe wider ecosystem change. A population count or a poor breeding season on its own does not establish climate as the cause; interpreting change requires evidence about habitat, prey, weather and other pressures over time. What to take from the evidence

  • Sea-ice loss can directly threaten emperor breeding habitat, while ice geometry can affect how land-breeding adults reach open water.
  • Changes in sea ice and ocean conditions may affect krill and other prey, but prey production, prey availability and fishing pressure are distinct parts of the picture.
  • Breeding success, chick survival and long-term population trends are different measures; findings from one colony or species should not be generalized to all penguins.
