Claude Code session history can restore an interrupted conversation and rewind some tracked edits—but it cannot roll back a deployment or replace Git. Use it as a short-range aid during production-adjacent work, while keeping version control and your team’s release and recovery procedures as the durable safety net.
How do I resume a Claude Code session?
Use the CLI to continue the latest conversation in the current directory or select a specific session by ID or name. Resuming restores conversational context; it does not restore the working tree to its earlier state or reproduce a previous production deployment.

Three practical production-adjacent scenarios
These are realistic examples of how the documented features can fit into a workflow, not reported customer incidents. Anthropic’s documentation does not quantify outages prevented or recovery time saved by session history.

1. Resume an interrupted investigation
Suppose you are investigating elevated errors, then need to close the terminal or return to the task later. Run claude --continue from the project directory to pick up the latest conversation, or use claude --resume <session-id-or-name> to reopen a particular investigation. The restored context can help you continue reasoning from prior discussion, but check the current files and production signals rather than assuming either is unchanged.
2. Rewind a tracked edit that went sideways
Claude Code checkpoints code state before each prompt that starts a turn. If a targeted edit introduces an unwanted change, enter /rewind or press Esc twice with an empty prompt to open the rewind menu. Depending on the available checkpoint, you can restore code and conversation together, restore code only, restore conversation only, or summarize part of the conversation. Code-restoration choices appear only when there are tracked file changes to revert.

Summarizing changes conversation context, not files on disk; the original messages remain in the transcript. Checkpoints are saved with the conversation, so rewind can remain available after resuming a session if the relevant snapshots still exist. Anthropic says snapshots are retained for the 100 most recent checkpoints in a session. Details and options are in the Checkpointing documentation.

3. Preserve the durable recovery path in Git
Once a fix has been reviewed and accepted, record it through the team’s normal version-control process. A commit or branch provides deliberate history for collaboration; the team’s release system determines how to recover a live service. Claude Code’s checkpoint is a quick, session-level convenience, not a commit or deployment rollback. Anthropic puts the distinction plainly: “Checkpoints are designed for quick, session-level recovery. For permanent version history and collaboration, continue using version control, such as Git, for commits, branches, and long-term history.”

What Claude Code rewind does—and does not—capture
Rewind is limited to changes captured by Claude Code’s checkpointing. It is not a universal undo for everything that happened during a debugging session.
- Changes made through Bash: edits from commands such as
rm,mv, orcpare not tracked for rewind. - Subagent changes: most subagent edits are not restored; the documentation describes a narrow foreground forked-skill case that is restored as usual.
- Outside and concurrent edits: manual changes and changes from other sessions are normally not captured, unless they happen to modify the same files as the current session.
- Linked files: symlinks and hard links are skipped by code restore.
- Expired snapshots: cleanup removes snapshots; by default, cleanup occurs about 30 days after the session last saved one. If snapshots are gone, rewind can fail with “No files were restored.” The
cleanupPeriodDayssetting can adjust the cleanup period.
For these limits and the documented exception, consult Anthropic’s checkpointing guidance. If an important edit falls outside checkpoint coverage, use Git or the team’s established recovery process rather than assuming rewind can recover it.

Does Claude Code session history replace Git?
No. The two serve different purposes, and Git alone does not roll back a live service without a suitable release and recovery workflow.

The practical division is simple: use session history for conversation continuity and quick recovery of eligible edits; use version control for durable code history, and rely on the team’s deployment safeguards for production recovery.

How long is Claude Code history retained, and where is it stored?
Local session transcripts are stored in plaintext under ~/.claude/projects/ for 30 days by default to enable resumption. The local cleanup period is configurable. Server-side retention is a separate matter and depends on account type and settings: Anthropic’s current documentation describes standard 30-day retention for commercial Team, Enterprise, and API users, while qualified Claude for Enterprise organizations may have zero data retention enabled by their account team. Consumer account retention depends on model-improvement data settings.
These retention details are not interchangeable: local transcript storage supports resumption, while server-side policy depends on the account and its configuration. Before discussing production source code in a session, check the applicable provider, plan, settings, and organizational data policy. See Anthropic’s Data usage documentation for the distinctions.
