Yes: sammyuri built a working computer from Minecraft’s in-game circuitry, and the team later got a version of Minecraft running on it. This is a computer-science feat inside the game, not a conventional PC hidden in Minecraft: Redstone logic provides the computing hardware, while a specialized server speeds up the simulation enough to make the complex circuitry practical.

What CHUNGUS2 is

CHUNGUS2 is a Redstone computer created by Minecraft builder sammyuri. Its CPU, memory and graphics components are assembled from in-game blocks and mechanisms that represent electronic logic. In other words, Minecraft supplies the materials and simulated environment; the build supplies the logic that processes instructions and produces images.

Minecraft.net’s official feature, “Minecraftception”, says sammyuri created the CPU, then Uwerta and StackDoubleFlow joined the effort to run Minecraft on it. The project takes the familiar idea that a computer can run a game and turns it into a nested demonstration: Minecraft circuitry renders a small version of Minecraft within Minecraft.

How the in-game computer works

Redstone components can act as switches and logic gates. Arranged in large, carefully connected structures, they can perform the operations of a processor. CHUNGUS2 links that processing to memory and graphics elements, adapting concepts from real-world computing to Minecraft’s block-based logic. The display represents the output as pixels rather than rendering the game with the graphics hardware of a desktop computer.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

The scale is deliberately constrained. PCWorld reports that CHUNGUS2 has an 8-bit processor, a 1 Hz clock and 256 bytes of RAM. Those figures describe the project as reported by PCWorld, not a general Minecraft specification or a modern computer benchmark. A 1 Hz clock means the reported processor operates at one cycle per second; the tiny memory capacity also helps explain why this is an engineering demonstration rather than a route to running a full desktop-scale game.

Why reports give two screen sizes

The display figures in coverage refer to different descriptions of the project, so they should not be merged into a single specification. Minecraft.net describes the Minecraft version rendered on a 96 × 64 pixel display. PCWorld describes a 32 × 32 screen/controller for the CHUNGUS2 game-playing computer it covers.

Source Screen description What the figure refers to
Minecraft.net official feature 96 × 64 pixels The display for the Minecraft-in-Minecraft version described by the feature.
PCWorld 32 × 32 The screen/controller in PCWorld’s technical description of CHUNGUS2.

The articles describe the display in different contexts; the available reporting does not establish that these numbers are interchangeable measurements of the same screen. Keeping each number tied to its source avoids implying that one source confirms the other’s figure.

Why a specialized server matters

A Redstone computer is not automatically fast just because it is built in a game. Minecraft.net says complex Redstone operations take too long to run at ordinary speed for this project, so the team used the Minecraft High Performance Redstone Server to accelerate processes thousands of times. That speed-up is what makes the computational workload more manageable; it does not mean CHUNGUS2 runs like a conventional gaming PC or that the game is demonstrated at ordinary vanilla-server speed.

What it can run—and what that proves

PCWorld describes CHUNGUS2 as able to run interchangeable 2D programs, including Tetris and Snake, and reports that some programs need artificial server speed-up. Minecraft.net’s feature focuses on the more ambitious Minecraft-in-Minecraft result. These are demonstrations of programs and game logic running on an in-game computer, not evidence that every modern game or a full-resolution Minecraft installation can run inside it.

Sammyuri framed the idea with a familiar computing challenge: “You know the classic thing that anything can run DOOM? Well, Minecraft probably can as well.” The official feature also quotes sammyuri saying, “If you start a project you have to want to finish it.” The achievement is less about practical gaming and more about translating computing concepts—processing, memory and graphics—into a system built from Minecraft mechanics.

How CHUNGUS2 fits into Minecraft computer builds

Players have built other Redstone computers capable of running programs and simple games. Minecraft.net’s “In Deep Thought” discusses that broader history, including an Atari 2600 emulator. Those projects provide context for in-game computing, but they are distinct from CHUNGUS2’s Minecraft-in-Minecraft effort; their components and capabilities should not be treated as specifications for this build.

For readers interested in making their own circuitry, Minecraft.net identifies Mumbo Jumbo tutorials, QSmally’s QCPU and Open Redstone Engineers among the inspirations or resources sammyuri mentioned. Starting with basic Redstone logic and small circuits is a more approachable way to learn the underlying ideas than attempting a processor-scale build.
