Chromebooks can run web apps and, on supported models, Android apps; some also offer an optional Linux development environment. You can work offline, but there is no universal offline switch: apps must support it, and cloud files usually need to be synced or downloaded first. The Files app brings together local Downloads, Google Drive, external storage, and Android app files, but those locations do not all behave the same way.
What kinds of apps can a Chromebook run?
ChromeOS supports web apps, Android apps on eligible Chromebooks, and an optional Linux development environment on supported devices. Which options appear depends on the Chromebook model, app compatibility, and—on managed work or school devices—administrator policy.
Web apps
Web apps run through the browser and often need an internet connection, though some offer offline features. Their offline behavior is app-specific: being able to open a site does not mean its content or editing tools will work without a connection. Google lists Gmail, Keep, Drive editors, Calendar, the built-in photo editor, and media among possible offline activities, with limitations that vary by service. Google’s Chromebook offline guide also notes that some offline services do not work in Guest or Incognito mode.
Android apps
Google Play is available only on supported Chromebooks, and not every Android app works on every model. A work or school administrator may also block Play Store access. Android apps use local device storage, so their downloaded content and app data can consume Chromebook space; on a shared device, local app data may also matter to other users. See Google’s Chromebook app compatibility guidance.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Linux development environment
On supported Chromebooks, Linux is an optional development environment rather than a general-purpose desktop app catalog. Google describes a Debian environment for command-line tools, editors, and IDEs that users enable through Settings. The documented setup has limitations, including unsupported Android emulators and no hardware acceleration. Details and availability are in Google’s Linux development environment guide.
Where Chromebook files are stored
The Files app is a file manager: it can show local files, cloud-backed files, Android app files, and compatible removable storage. Seeing an item in Files does not necessarily mean its contents are stored on the Chromebook.

- Downloads: Files saved here are stored on the Chromebook. Downloads is the default location, though you can change where downloads are saved.
- Google Drive: Drive files are cloud-backed. A file may need an internet connection unless you make it available offline first.
- Play files: Android app files appear in this area of Files.
- External storage: Compatible USB drives and other removable devices can appear when connected.
Files can display common documents, PDFs, images, media, and archives, but support depends on the file type and, for media, the codec. Google’s Files app guide describes file access and download-location options; its supported file types and external devices guide covers compatibility.
What works offline—and what needs preparation?
Offline work depends on both the app and the particular content. An app may open without a connection but still be unable to load cloud files, sync changes, or use some features. Prepare files while connected, and check the intended app and workflow before relying on them away from the internet.

Google Drive files
- While online, enable Drive offline access. In the Files app, open Google Drive and follow the prompt to enable offline access if it is not already on.
- Choose the content to keep on the device. In Files, select a file or folder and turn on Available offline. A check mark indicates the item is available without a connection.
- Work offline, then reconnect. Edits to supported files sync to Drive when the Chromebook next connects to the internet.
On Chromebook Plus, a setting can make all files in My Drive available offline, subject to available storage. Google explains setup and sync behavior in Use Google Drive files offline on your Chromebook.
Gmail
Turn on Gmail offline while connected and select how much mail to sync. Messages you send without a connection wait in Outbox and are sent when connectivity returns. Gmail offline does not work in Incognito, and a work or school account may require administrator settings. Follow Google’s Gmail offline instructions.

Keep, media, and other services
Keep notes can be created or edited offline after the app has had time online to sync existing notes. For media, download eligible content in the relevant app before going offline; requirements vary by service and may include a subscription. Google’s offline guidance says YouTube Music for Chromebook does not support offline playback; its documented offline option requires the Android app and YouTube Premium. Because service features and subscription terms can change, check the current app’s requirements before a trip.

Offline copies take space on the Chromebook. Google identifies Downloads, offline Drive files, Android storage, browsing data, and other users’ data among the storage categories. Low storage can interfere with downloads and Android apps; ChromeOS may also automatically remove some downloaded files or other data. Check available space before syncing a large set of files, and avoid assuming an offline copy will remain available if storage is full. See Google’s Chromebook storage guidance.

Can you use USB drives and other external storage?
Yes, if the Chromebook, drive, connection, and file system are compatible. Google lists FAT16, FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, MTP, and certain read-only formats among those supported. A drive that works with another computer is not guaranteed to work with a particular Chromebook; the device, cable, format, or ChromeOS version can affect compatibility. Before reformatting a drive, back up its contents: reformatting erases the data. Consult Google’s external storage and file-system guidance and supported file types and external devices list.
Important caveat for Microsoft Office files
Chromebooks can open many Office formats, but offline editing is not equivalent across apps. Google’s Office guidance says Microsoft 365 files cannot be opened in Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, or Microsoft 365 while offline; a basic editor with limited functionality may be offered instead. Test a representative file in the app you intend to use before depending on offline editing. See Google’s Office file guidance for Chromebooks.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before going offline
- Confirm the app works offline for the task you need—not just that it opens.
- While connected, sync or download the specific Drive files, mail, notes, or media you plan to use.
- Check local storage, especially if you are preparing a large set of files.
- Test the exact file format and intended editing app, particularly for Microsoft 365 documents.
- If using a USB drive, confirm the Chromebook connection and file-system compatibility; keep a backup before making format changes.
- Reconnect when possible so queued messages and supported file edits can sync.
