In demonstrations reported by Chinese institutions, monkeys used implanted brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) to control robotic arms, including grasping a strawberry and intercepting moving targets. The implants recorded neural activity; software translated learned movement-related signals into commands. These were trained animal experiments—not unrestricted mind reading—and the reports describe related systems, not necessarily the same trial.

How did the monkey control the robotic arm?

The reported system linked brain activity to a machine through implanted electrodes, signal-acquisition electronics and decoding software. The electrodes recorded neural signals associated with movement. The software interpreted those signals as commands for the arm, such as where to move or how to grasp. The monkey could then see the arm’s movement and adjust its control based on visual feedback.

This is a closed-loop control process: the system decodes neural activity, moves the arm, and gives the animal feedback it can use to improve its control. A peer-reviewed primate study described monkeys learning to control a robotic arm and gripper across six degrees of freedom, with neural signals used to decode hand position, velocity and grasping force. That broader result helps explain the approach, but it does not establish the exact performance of the Chinese demonstrations.

What did China’s demonstrations show?

Chinese public accounts describe several related demonstrations. Their details should be kept separate: the available reports do not establish that they used the same hardware or were filmed during the same experiment.

Report System and task described What the report establishes
Beijing Municipal Government, 2025 A high-throughput flexible microwire electrode implanted in a monkey’s skull; control of a screen cursor and a robotic arm that intercepted and grasped dynamic targets. The report describes cursor control and moving-target interception and grasping. It does not state a channel count for this system.
Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 2024 The NeuCyber Array, described as a 1,024-channel wired invasive BCI; a monkey controlled a robotic arm and grasped a strawberry. The developers named were the Chinese Institute for Brain Research, Beijing, and NeuCyber NeuroTech. The report identifies the system and its stated channel count, and describes a strawberry-grasping demonstration. It does not establish that this was the Beijing report’s moving-target trial.
Nankai University, 2023 An interventional BCI experiment in which a monkey controlled a robotic arm. The account discussed the stability limits of non-invasive signals and the surgical burden of invasive interfaces; it does not provide a directly comparable performance result for the later demonstrations.

The reported tasks differ in what the animal was asked to do: controlling a cursor, grasping a stationary object, or intercepting moving targets. The official accounts do not provide a comparable set of accuracy, latency, sample-size or success-rate figures for the exact headline demonstration, so a numerical ranking of these systems is not supported.

Is a brain chip reading the monkey’s thoughts?

No. “Brain chip” is a media shorthand for a BCI system, not a device that reads arbitrary thoughts. In these experiments, implanted electrodes recorded neural activity and a decoder used it to control specific, trained tasks. The demonstrations show learned control of a robotic arm; they do not show unrestricted access to the animal’s thoughts, autonomous reasoning or a general-purpose interface.

The monkey also received visual feedback and learned how its neural activity mapped to the arm’s movement. That training and feedback are part of the control system, rather than evidence that the arm simply responds to any thought the animal has.

How does this relate to BCIs for people?

Animal demonstrations can show that a control approach is technically possible, but they are not evidence that a system is ready for routine use by patients. Human translation involves its own clinical testing and safety questions, and the Chinese reports describe separate systems and stages of development.

Beinao clinical-development reports

In 2026, the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences reported that Beinao No.1 had completed 16 implantations, with the longest implantation exceeding one year and more than 55,000 hours of safe operation reported for the system. These figures apply to Beinao No.1 as described in that account; they are not performance metrics for the monkey demonstration or the NeuCyber Array.

The same 2026 account said Beinao No.2 was expected to enter clinical validation in the second half of 2026. That was a stated expectation, not confirmation of the trial’s eventual status. A separate 2026 CAS forum report described Beinao-1 activating a robotic arm to pour water into a cup, a later demonstration beyond the earlier monkey-grasping account.

What clinical goals have been stated?

Li Yuan, director of business development at Beijing Xinzhida Neurotechnology Co., Ltd., said the company planned to advance a wireless, fully implanted, high-channel, high-performance BCI for patients with motor and language impairments caused by spinal cord injuries, stroke and ALS. He described the goal as functional reconstruction and improved quality of life. This is a company representative’s forward-looking statement, not evidence that those outcomes have already been achieved.

Can consumers buy the system?

The reported implants are specialized research and clinical-development systems, not consumer products. The available accounts do not establish a consumer version equivalent to the implanted interfaces used in these demonstrations. Consumer EEG headsets and hobby robotic arms are different kinds of devices and should not be treated as equivalent to an implanted BCI.
