Chicxulub is enormous, but it is not the largest known impact structure on Earth. NASA describes the buried structure beneath Mexico’s Yucatán region as about 180 km wide and ranks it third among confirmed impact structures. Vredefort in South Africa and Sudbury in Canada are older and may have had larger original craters. What makes Chicxulub distinctive is its comparatively good preservation and its strong link to the Cretaceous–Paleogene mass extinction.
How Chicxulub compares at a glance
These figures are not measurements of five intact circular bowls. Chicxulub is buried, while Vredefort and Sudbury have been substantially eroded or deformed. A reported diameter may describe an inferred original crater, an underground structural boundary, or a remnant visible today.
| Impact structure | Approximate scale and age | What the figure describes | Present condition and significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vredefort, South Africa | Impact about 2 billion years ago | NASA calls it the largest known impact structure; the surviving Vredefort Dome is about 90 km across. | The dome is an eroded central-uplift remnant, not the full original crater. NASA describes Vredefort as the oldest and largest known impact structure (NASA Earth Observatory, 2018). |
| Sudbury, Canada | About 1.8 billion years old; original crater thought to have been at least 200 km across | NASA’s qualified estimate is for the original crater, not a present-day rim. | Deformed and eroded; the region is associated with major nickel and copper ore deposits (NASA Earth Observatory). |
| Chicxulub, Mexico | About 180 km; roughly 65 million years old | NASA’s approximate diameter for the buried impact structure. | Buried beneath the Yucatán region and comparatively well preserved; associated with the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction (NASA; Gulick et al., 2013). |
| Popigai, Russia | Nearly 100 km; about 36 million years old | Approximate structure diameter and age reported by NASA. | Relatively well preserved; NASA describes it as the fourth-largest verified structure, tied with Manicouagan (NASA Earth Observatory, 2021). |
| Manicouagan, Canada | About 100 km; roughly 215 million years old | Approximate structure diameter and age. | A multi-ring structure; NASA lists it as sixth-largest confirmed (NASA). |
The ranking depends on definitions and estimates. NASA’s page calls Chicxulub third-largest among confirmed structures, while Richard Grieve and Ann Therriault’s 2000 review treats Vredefort, Sudbury, and Chicxulub as the three largest known terrestrial impact structures. Neither ranking means that the modern visible feature at each site is directly comparable in diameter (Grieve and Therriault, 2000).
Why Chicxulub is not simply “the biggest”
“Crater size” can refer to different things. An original crater is the feature formed at impact; a buried structural boundary is mapped beneath younger rock; and an exposed remnant is what erosion has left at the surface. Chicxulub’s approximate 180 km figure refers to a buried structure. Vredefort’s roughly 90 km figure describes its present dome, while its original crater was larger. Sudbury’s at-least-200-km figure is an estimate of its original crater.

Earth’s geology complicates the comparison: erosion, deformation, burial, and later geological activity can obscure or alter impact features. A 2013 review notes that fewer than 200 terrestrial impact structures preserve the original population and identifies Sudbury and Vredefort as the only other structures comparable in size to Chicxulub. The three are therefore best compared as immense impact structures, not as three pristine circles whose rims can be measured in the same way (Gulick et al., 2013).
What distinguishes the three largest structures
Chicxulub: preservation and a mass-extinction link
Chicxulub formed roughly 65 million years ago and is buried beneath the Yucatán region. A 2013 review describes it as the only known terrestrial impact structure directly linked to a mass extinction and associated with a global ejecta layer. The review also distinguishes Chicxulub by its preservation and unequivocal topographic peak ring. That combination, rather than size alone, explains why Chicxulub is so prominent in accounts of Earth’s impact history (Gulick et al., 2013).

Vredefort: the largest known structure, heavily worn down
Vredefort’s impact occurred about 2 billion years ago. NASA calls it the oldest and largest known impact structure, but the roughly 90 km Vredefort Dome is the surviving, eroded central uplift—not the full original crater. Its immense age and subsequent erosion make a simple comparison with Chicxulub’s buried boundary misleading. Vredefort also preserves evidence of deep crustal deformation and remains important to impact geology (NASA Earth Observatory, 2018).
Sudbury: a deformed impact structure with mineral significance
Sudbury dates to about 1.8 billion years ago. NASA says the original crater is thought to have been at least 200 km across, but the structure has been strongly deformed and eroded. The Sudbury region is also closely associated with nickel and copper ore deposits, giving it significance beyond the study of impact craters (NASA Earth Observatory).

How Popigai and Manicouagan fit in
Popigai and Manicouagan are smaller than the three giant structures, at about 100 km across each in the cited NASA accounts, but both are useful comparisons. Popigai is about 36 million years old and relatively well preserved; NASA calls it the fourth-largest verified impact structure, tied with Manicouagan. Manicouagan, about 215 million years old, is a multi-ring structure, and NASA lists it as sixth-largest confirmed. These distinctions illustrate why rankings should be quoted with their source and terminology rather than treated as a single definitive scale.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the comparison matters
The structures preserve different parts of Earth’s impact story. Chicxulub offers a comparatively well-preserved record tied to a global extinction event. Vredefort and Sudbury are far older, deeply altered structures that expose evidence of crustal deformation; Sudbury also has important mineral associations. Grieve and Therriault’s 2000 review discusses multiple-ring attributes in all three, chiefly structural features, but notes that the evidence assessed did not establish that any originally had the morphological characteristics of large lunar multi-ring basins. That is the review’s interpretation, not a universal classification of their original forms (Grieve and Therriault, 2000).
