ChatGPT can interpret an image you attach and answer questions about what it shows; ChatGPT Images can also create new images or edit existing ones. These are different tasks, and neither guarantees precise results: image analysis can miss visual details, while an edit can change areas beyond the one you selected. The steps and availability below reflect OpenAI’s documentation checked October 7, 2026.
Can ChatGPT understand images?
Yes. Add a still image to a conversation and ask ChatGPT about its visible content. OpenAI describes this as understanding and interpreting images; examples include identifying objects, analyzing documents, and exploring visual content. In practice, ChatGPT receives image content and generates an interpretation in the context of your conversation. That is not a guarantee of exact recognition, nor does it mean the system has human-like perception. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Image Inputs FAQ.

ChatGPT does not process the image’s original filename or metadata, and images are resized before analysis. Resizing can affect the dimensions and fine detail available to the model.
How do I upload a picture to ChatGPT?
- Open a conversation. Use the plus menu to add an image, drag an image file into the text area, or paste an image.
- Ask a focused question. For example, ask what a label says, what a chart’s axes represent, or which objects appear in a scene.
- Clarify the area or detail you mean. If the image is busy, point to the relevant region in your prompt or mark it on the image.
OpenAI’s current FAQ lists PNG, JPEG (.jpeg and .jpg), and non-animated GIF as supported still-image formats, with a limit of 20 MB per image. There is no single published maximum image count for every conversation: the number ChatGPT can handle depends on image sizes and accompanying text. If uploads fail, try fewer or smaller images. Image inputs are available on Free and paid plans, subject to plan-specific usage limits and account settings.

Can ChatGPT read text in a photo or analyze a chart?
It can try to interpret text and visual information, but you should not treat its answer as a transcription or measurement you can rely on without checking. Text recognition is more difficult when writing is small, rotated, upside down, or in non-Latin scripts such as Japanese or Korean. Charts can also be difficult to interpret, particularly when several lines use different colors or styles.
- For small writing, provide a clearer or closer view while keeping enough surrounding context to identify what the text refers to.
- For a chart, ask about a specific title, axis, legend, or trend rather than requesting an open-ended interpretation of everything at once.
- For documents or labels, compare extracted wording with the original before acting on it.
Can ChatGPT create or edit an image?
Yes. OpenAI’s current Images in ChatGPT guide describes two ways to start: request an image in a conversation or open Images and enter a prompt. You can ask ChatGPT Images to create a new image, edit an image it generated, or modify an image you upload. Describe the change in chat or select a region in the editor and describe what should change; you can also specify an aspect ratio.

Selection highlights are not always exact, and the resulting edit may extend beyond the selected region. Review the full image after an edit, not just the marked area. Generation can take a few minutes depending on complexity. The guide also describes templates, saving and revisiting images in Images, and options to download, copy, or share them.
OpenAI’s September 8, 2026 release note describes ChatGPT Images 2.5, including templates, mobile sketch-to-image, image editing and commenting, and prompt sharing. It says templates were not yet available in Work mode and that existing image-generation limits were unchanged at that time. These are dated rollout details, not a guarantee that interfaces or limits will remain the same.

Why does ChatGPT get details in my image wrong?
Image analysis is fallible, and some visual tasks are especially challenging. OpenAI lists these limitations in its Image Inputs FAQ:
- Small or difficult text: Small writing, non-Latin scripts, and rotated or upside-down content can be misread.
- Complex charts: Graphs with differently colored or styled lines may be hard to understand.
- Exact position and quantity: Precise spatial localization, such as identifying chess positions, can be unreliable; object counts may be approximate.
- Unusual views: Panoramic and fisheye images can be misinterpreted.
- Lost detail: Resizing can reduce the fine detail or original dimensions available for analysis.
- Descriptions and captions: ChatGPT may describe an image incorrectly, even when it can identify the general subject.
To improve the odds of a useful answer, upload the clearest image available, avoid unnecessary rotation, enlarge small text without removing relevant context, and ask about a specific detail. Marking the area of interest can help focus the question, but it cannot guarantee accurate localization. Check consequential interpretations against the source image or another reliable source.

OpenAI warns: “The model is not suitable for interpreting specialized medical images like CT scans and shouldn’t be used for medical advice.” Do not use ChatGPT image analysis to interpret a CT scan or make medical decisions.

The official DALL·E GPT in ChatGPT retired on August 30, 2026. OpenAI directs users to ChatGPT Images for image creation and editing. The retirement notice concerns that official GPT; it does not establish that every DALL·E-related product or API has been discontinued. Which image feature should I use?
- Choose image understanding when you already have a picture and want a description, an explanation, or help examining its contents.
- Choose ChatGPT Images when you want to make a new image or change an existing one.
- Check the result yourself when exact text, position, counts, or other consequential details matter.
Availability depends on the feature and can change. As documented on October 7, 2026, image inputs were available on Free and paid plans, subject to plan limits and account settings. The Images guide listed ChatGPT Images on all tiers and on web, iOS, and Android. It listed Images with thinking for Plus, Pro, and Business, with Enterprise and Edu availability forthcoming. Ordinary image features and Images with thinking are distinct; check the current guide and your account for present access.
For data-use details, OpenAI says image content follows the approach for the relevant product and directs users to product-specific information. It specifically says ChatGPT Enterprise content is not used to train OpenAI’s models; that statement should not be generalized to other plans or accounts. Review the information and settings that apply to your account.
