New Outlook for Windows does not currently offer the Classic Outlook rule that holds every outgoing email for a configurable number of minutes. Microsoft Q&A answers dated September 25, 2025, and January 26, 2026, say the Classic Outlook “defer delivery by a number of minutes” rule is not available in New Outlook.

You can schedule individual messages or use Undo send as a short all-message cancellation window. If you need every email to remain in the Outbox for 5, 30, or 120 minutes, you must currently use Classic Outlook for Windows.

What you can and cannot do in New Outlook

Requirement New Outlook Classic Outlook
Delay one selected message Yes, with Schedule send Yes
Delay every outgoing message by several minutes No supported rule Yes, with a mail rule
Short cancellation period for all sent messages Yes, with Undo send Not the same feature
Maximum documented global delay Undo send is reported as up to 30 seconds 120 minutes

This distinction matters because several online guides describe the Classic Outlook procedure as though it also applies to New Outlook. It does not. The Manage Rules & Alerts path and the defer delivery by a number of minutes action belong to Classic Outlook for Windows.

Option 1: Add a short delay to every message with Undo send

New Outlook includes an Undo send setting. It holds outgoing messages briefly so you can cancel them after selecting Send. Microsoft Q&A guidance says this setting applies to all emails you send and holds them in Drafts during the delay; the currently reported maximum is 30 seconds.

  1. Open New Outlook and select the Settings gear in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Mail.
  3. Choose Compose and reply.
  4. Scroll to the Undo send section.
  5. Choose the number of seconds Outlook should wait before sending messages.
  6. Close Settings or return to your mailbox.

This is useful if you regularly notice a wrong recipient, missing attachment, or typo immediately after clicking Send. It is not a replacement for a five-minute or two-hour delivery delay. Undo send provides a short opportunity to cancel the send; it does not reproduce Classic Outlook’s deferred-delivery rule or its Outbox-based behavior.

What happens during the Undo send period?

After you select Send, Outlook keeps the message in Drafts during the configured cancellation window. If you do nothing, it is sent when the countdown ends. If you catch an error, use the Undo option shown by Outlook to stop the message and edit it before sending again.

Because the maximum is reported as up to 30 seconds, this option cannot be used to create a reliable long delay. It also does not let you set different delays for different recipients or message types through a rule.

Option 2: Schedule an individual message

For a message that should go out later, use New Outlook’s Schedule send command. This must be selected separately for each email; enabling it once does not create a global delay.

  1. Compose the email.
  2. Select the dropdown arrow next to Send.
  3. Choose Schedule send.
  4. Select one of the suggested delivery times, or choose a custom time.
  5. Select Send to schedule the message.

The message remains in Drafts until its scheduled delivery time. This is different from Classic Outlook’s global delay, where messages remain in the Outbox while the rule is holding them.

Send a scheduled message immediately

  1. Open the Drafts folder.
  2. Open the scheduled message.
  3. Select the Edit pencil icon.
  4. Select Send Now.

Important account limitation

New Outlook’s Schedule send feature is unavailable for IMAP and POP accounts. If the command is missing, check which account is being used for the message. The feature is intended for supported Microsoft-hosted and other compatible account types, not every account configured in Outlook.

Option 3: Switch to Classic Outlook for a true all-message delay

If your requirement is “hold every outgoing message for a chosen number of minutes,” Classic Outlook for Windows has the appropriate rule. Its delay can be configured for up to 120 minutes.

  1. Open Classic Outlook.
  2. Select Mail if Outlook opens in another module.
  3. Go to File → Manage Rules & Alerts.
  4. On the Email Rules tab, select New Rule.
  5. Under Start from a Blank Rule, select Apply rule on messages I send, then select Next.
  6. Do not select a condition. Select Next.
  7. When Outlook asks whether the rule should apply to every message, select Yes.
  8. Select defer delivery by a number of minutes.
  9. In the rule description, select the underlined a number of.
  10. Enter the delay in minutes, select OK, and then select Next.
  11. Add any exceptions you need, such as allowing urgent messages to bypass the delay. Select Next.
  12. Enter a rule name.
  13. Make sure Turn on this rule is selected, then select Finish.

With this rule enabled, sent messages stay in the Outbox for the configured delay before Outlook sends them. The rule’s action is specifically named defer delivery by a number of minutes; it is not the same as Schedule send or Undo send.

Requirements and failure modes in Classic Outlook

  • Outlook must be online and connected. The deferred-delivery process depends on Classic Outlook being connected.
  • Messages can appear stuck in Outbox. That is expected while the rule’s delay is active. If they remain there after the delay, check the connection, Send/Receive status, and whether Outlook is working offline.
  • Cached Exchange Mode can affect scheduled delivery. With the “Do not deliver before” option, a deferred message can be held in the local .ost Outbox rather than deferred on the server. If Outlook is closed at the scheduled time, delivery may wait until Outlook is running again. This behavior does not occur in Online Mode.
  • Exceptions are important. Without an exception, the rule affects every message sent from that Outlook profile, including messages you may consider urgent.

How to find an existing delay rule in Classic Outlook

If a message unexpectedly remains in the Outbox, an old deferred-delivery rule may be responsible. To check:

  1. Open File → Manage Rules & Alerts.
  2. Select each rule in turn.
  3. Read the Rule description at the bottom of the window.
  4. Look for wording such as defer delivery by # minutes.

Clear the checkbox beside the rule to disable it temporarily, or open the rule and change its delay or exceptions.

Why common New Outlook instructions do not work

A frequently repeated set of instructions tells New Outlook users to open Manage Rules & Alerts, choose Apply rule on messages I send, and select defer delivery by a number of minutes. Those are valid Classic Outlook instructions, but they are not a currently supported way to create a global delay in New Outlook.

Likewise, choosing Schedule send does not turn on a global delay. It schedules only the message currently being composed. Microsoft has not identified an announced roadmap date for bringing the Classic-style global deferred-delivery rule to New Outlook in the cited January 2026 Q&A responses.

FAQ

Can New Outlook delay every email by five minutes?

Not with a supported global rule. New Outlook’s Undo send setting provides only a short cancellation window, reported as up to 30 seconds. For a five-minute delay on every message, use Classic Outlook’s “defer delivery by a number of minutes” rule.

Does Schedule send apply to all future messages?

No. You select Schedule send separately for each message. Scheduled messages remain in Drafts until their delivery time.

Where is the delay-all-outgoing-mail rule in New Outlook?

It is not currently available. The Manage Rules & Alerts procedure with “Apply rule on messages I send” and “defer delivery by a number of minutes” is the Classic Outlook for Windows procedure.

Can I send a scheduled message immediately after scheduling it?

Yes. Open Drafts, open the scheduled message, select the Edit pencil icon, and choose Send Now.

Why is Schedule send missing in New Outlook?

Schedule send is unavailable for IMAP and POP accounts. Check the account associated with the message before troubleshooting the Outlook interface.

Why is my email still in the Classic Outlook Outbox?

It may still be within the configured delay, or an existing deferred-delivery rule may be holding it. Check File → Manage Rules & Alerts and inspect each rule’s description for “defer delivery by # minutes.” Also verify that Outlook is connected and not working offline.

The Bottom Line

New Outlook cannot currently delay all outgoing emails by a configurable number of minutes. Set Undo send for a short, reported maximum of 30 seconds; use Schedule send for individual messages; or switch to Classic Outlook for Windows and create the defer delivery by a number of minutes rule for a true global delay of up to 120 minutes.
