Use the authorized mailbox provider API to find and retrieve the likely verification email, then pass its message text to a structured extraction step. The API handles mailbox access; a language model or other extraction component interprets the email and returns the code—or an explicit not-found result. Neither Gmail API nor Microsoft Graph automatically identifies verification codes.

How the no-regex approach works

Separate the task into two parts: locate the correct message, then extract its code. Searching only the email body for a digit pattern can return an unrelated number, such as a date or support phone number. Instead, use the sender, subject, and received time to narrow the messages before asking an extraction component to interpret the selected message.

  1. Get authorization. Confirm the user or operator has authorized the agent to read the mailbox and messages needed for this workflow.
  2. Find a candidate email. Search recent messages using provider-supported criteria, such as the expected sender or domain, subject cues, and a relevant received-time window.
  3. Retrieve the message. Fetch the likely message and provide its text body, along with enough task context to identify which code is relevant.
  4. Request a constrained result. Ask the extraction component to return a defined structure, for example {"code":"..."} or {"code":null,"reason":"not found"}.
  5. Validate before using it. Check that the result makes sense for the requesting page. If there are multiple candidate messages or values, use stronger message context or ask for clarification; do not let the component guess.

This is a practical implementation pattern, not a feature either provider documents as automatic code detection. Test it against the verification emails your workflow actually receives, and treat a missing or ambiguous result as a failed extraction.

Choose the mailbox access method

Option What it provides What to consider
Gmail API Gmail mailbox data access and message search/filtering. Google describes it as letting applications view and manage Gmail mailbox data, including threads, messages, and labels. Google Gmail API reference; Gmail API filtering guide. Configure OAuth and the required scope, use Gmail’s search syntax, and verify the query against the target mailbox. Gmail API alias searches can differ from alias expansion in the Gmail UI.
Microsoft Graph v1.0 Retrieves messages from Microsoft mailboxes the application is authorized to access. Its message endpoint documents delegated or application mail permissions and supports requesting message content as text. Microsoft Graph message retrieval. Choose delegated or application permissions appropriate to the workflow, confirm tenant and mailbox access, and set Prefer: outlook.body-content-type="text" when you want the body returned as text.
IMAP for Gmail Google lists IMAP as a way for alternative email clients to connect to Gmail. Google guidance for connecting to Gmail with IMAP. Consider it if your system already uses IMAP; authentication setup and provider-specific capabilities may differ from using the Gmail API.

Make extraction reliable without regex

Give the extractor useful context

Include the message text and a short description of the action the user is completing. If the search returned multiple messages, identify the selected message using its sender, subject, and received time. That context helps distinguish a current sign-in code from an older code or an unrelated number.

Require a strict response

Constrain the response to the agreed structure and define what to return when no code is clearly present. For example, request a JSON object with either a string-valued code or null plus a short reason. Parse and validate that response in your application; do not treat free-form explanation as a usable code.

Fail closed on uncertainty

If the message is missing, contains several plausible codes, or does not match the expected task, stop rather than selecting a value by guesswork. A safe workflow can ask for another message or user confirmation. This is application-level validation guidance, not a guarantee provided by Gmail or Graph.

What varies by provider and workflow

The mailbox provider determines the API, authorization setup, search details, and available message format. The verification service and email template determine what context the extractor needs. Gmail’s alias-search behavior is one concrete difference: API filtering may not expand aliases the same way the Gmail interface does, so test searches against the actual target mailbox. The cited APIs provide message access; code recognition remains the responsibility of your extraction step.
