Callbacks make code more flexible by letting a caller supply behavior that a function, library, or framework invokes at a defined point. Instead of hard-coding every response into the reusable code, its author exposes a hook; the caller decides what that hook does. This works best when the API clearly defines when the callback runs, what it receives, and how its result or errors are handled.

How a callback creates an extension point

A callback is behavior passed from one part of a program to another for later invocation. For example, a library might accept a callback to process each item it finds, decide what to do after a request succeeds, or customize a framework step. The library controls when the hook is called; the caller controls the supplied behavior. Microsoft’s .NET framework design guidance describes callbacks as extensibility points, commonly implemented with a delegate passed as a method parameter: Microsoft’s callback guidance.

This separates stable mechanics from variable policy. A reusable function can handle traversal, scheduling, or coordination while callers choose how to respond. The trade-off is that a callback transfers control to caller code, so the API must make that transfer predictable and safe.

Define the callback contract before implementing it

A callback signature tells callers what they must provide, but the contract also needs to explain the circumstances of invocation. Document these points:

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Invocation point: State what event or stage triggers it, and whether it runs before, during, or after the operation.
  • Arguments and context: Name each argument, its meaning, and whether it is optional or nullable. If the callback needs caller-specific context, pass it explicitly rather than relying on hidden global state.
  • Return behavior: Say whether the callback returns a value, whether the API uses that value, and what happens if it returns an unexpected result.
  • Frequency: Specify whether it runs once, once per item, repeatedly, or only on a particular outcome.
  • Timing and execution context: Clarify whether it runs immediately, later, on an event loop, or on another thread when that is relevant.
  • Errors and cancellation: Explain whether exceptions propagate, are caught, or are reported through another channel, and whether the caller can cancel pending work.

These details matter because two APIs can accept callbacks yet make very different promises about timing, repetition, and failure. Microsoft’s guidance also cautions that delegates invoke arbitrary code, with correctness, security, and compatibility implications; its recommendations are specific to .NET framework design rather than a universal rule for every language.

Pass extra data explicitly

When callback code needs information beyond the event-specific arguments, provide a documented context parameter. Zephyr’s callback guidance uses a pattern that supplies the associated object, invocation-specific values, and a final user_data pointer. That lets one shared callback function access the right caller-owned context without embedding a separate function for every instance: Zephyr interrupt documentation.

In languages that support closures, a callback can also capture variables from its surrounding scope. Another option is to bind arguments in advance: Python’s asyncio documentation shows functools.partial() for supplying keyword arguments to scheduled callbacks, while Chromium’s C++ guidance illustrates binding arguments to callback objects. Prefer an explicit context argument when it makes ownership and lifetime clearer, especially across an API boundary; use captures or partial application when their lifetime and behavior are straightforward.

Callbacks can be synchronous or asynchronous

“Callback” describes how behavior is supplied and invoked, not when it runs. A function may call a callback immediately before it returns, or an API may schedule it for later. The API contract determines which applies.

For instance, Python’s asyncio event-loop API offers call_later(delay, callback, *args) to schedule a callback after a delay, accepts positional arguments, and supports keyword arguments through functools.partial(). It returns a TimerHandle that can cancel the scheduled callback. Scheduled callbacks run once; if two callbacks are scheduled for exactly the same time, their execution order is undefined in the documented API. See the Python asyncio event-loop documentation.

Asynchronous APIs commonly use callbacks to report separate outcomes. The W3C Web API Design Cookbook illustrates methods with distinct success and failure callbacks: W3C Web API Design Cookbook. When designing such an API, make clear whether the operation can invoke both handlers, what happens if one is omitted, and how failures in the callback itself are surfaced.

Choose among callbacks, events, and dependency injection

Need Likely fit Design question
One operation needs caller-provided behavior at a defined point. Callback What are its timing, signature, return and error paths, and call frequency?
A .NET framework provides a user-facing notification or customization point. Event Would familiar event-handler syntax, subscription, discoverability, or tooling help users?
A component needs a replaceable service or implementation. Dependency injection Who owns construction and lifetime, and what replacement scope and testability are needed?

Use a callback for a focused operation or hook

A callback is a natural fit when a particular operation needs behavior from its caller at a specific point—for example, a predicate, transformation, or completion handler. The API should own the invocation and communicate its contract precisely. For performance-sensitive .NET APIs, Microsoft’s framework design guidance advises avoiding callbacks; treat that as .NET-specific guidance, not a blanket prohibition across programming languages.

Consider an event for notifications and subscriptions

Events are often more suitable when a framework notifies users of something that happened or offers a conventional customization point. Microsoft recommends considering events in .NET when users benefit from familiar event-handler syntax and Visual Studio integration, and generally prefers events over plain callbacks in its framework guidance. That recommendation concerns .NET framework API design; other ecosystems may make different conventions or trade-offs more appropriate.

Use dependency injection for replaceable services

Dependency injection (DI) addresses a related but distinct need: a component depends on an abstraction and receives a service implementation rather than constructing a concrete implementation itself. ASP.NET Core documents DI as a way to reduce direct dependencies on concrete types, make implementations easier to replace, and improve testability: ASP.NET Core dependency injection. A callback typically supplies an operation or hook; DI supplies a dependency that the component may use throughout its work.

Account for runtime and language-specific constraints

Python extensions written in C

A Python C extension that accepts a Python callable must retain and invoke it safely through the Python C API. Reference counting and exception propagation are part of the implementation contract, not incidental details. Follow the applicable Python C API documentation for callable objects and references: Python’s C extension documentation.

Python callbacks passed to native code

With Python ctypes, define a callback type whose calling convention, result type, and argument types match the native function. The documentation distinguishes CFUNCTYPE for cdecl from Windows WINFUNCTYPE for stdcall: Python ctypes documentation.

With CFFI, a callback object stored by C must remain alive for as long as C may call it. For out-of-line API mode, CFFI recommends its extern "Python" mechanism instead of older callbacks: CFFI callback documentation.

One-shot, repeating, and flexible callback APIs

Callback types can encode usage patterns. Chromium’s C++ guidance distinguishes one-shot and repeating callbacks and demonstrates binding arguments in advance, which can avoid a separate adapter class in the examples it documents: Chromium callback documentation. In Dash, flexible callback signatures support named keyword inputs, groups, and mixed input/state declarations; the Dash documentation identifies the feature as introduced in Dash 2.0: Dash flexible callback signatures. These are framework-specific designs, not interchangeable requirements for every callback API.
