Websites can recognize or re-identify a browser by combining information visible in web requests with characteristics that a page’s code can observe. That can work without cookies. Privacy-focused browsers such as Tor Browser aim to make users harder to single out by reducing or standardizing some signals; antidetect browsers instead offer profile-level controls to mask, customize, expose, or disable selected signals. Neither approach makes a user anonymous simply by changing a few browser values.

What browser fingerprinting is

The W3C defines browser fingerprinting as the capability to identify or re-identify a visiting user, user agent, or device through configuration settings and other observable characteristics. A fingerprint is not necessarily one hidden serial number. It is better understood as a combination of clues a site can observe and assess together. The W3C’s 2025 guidance on mitigating browser fingerprinting distinguishes between information available in web requests and information a site actively collects with code.

Passive observations: requests and network information

A site can use information available in a web request without running code on the page. W3C examples include request headers, the User-Agent header, an IP address, and other network-level information. These observations are called passive fingerprinting because they do not require client-side code to collect them.

Active observations: browser and device characteristics

A site can also run JavaScript or other code to observe characteristics of the browser, device, or browsing context. CSS features can be used for fingerprinting as well. The particular signals available depend on what the browser exposes and what the site checks; there is no single universal checklist that every site uses.

Why combining signals matters for privacy

One browser value does not automatically identify every person who shares it. The privacy concern is that several observations, considered together, may help a site distinguish a browser or connect visits over time. The W3C says fingerprinting can identify users, correlate activity across sessions, and enable tracking without transparency or control. It also recognizes potential security uses, such as authentication: the same general capability can support different purposes, while unwanted identification and correlation create privacy risks.

Network and browser signals are different layers. A VPN or proxy may change the network address a site sees, but that alone does not change browser and device characteristics. Conversely, changing values exposed by the browser does not change every network-level property. The sources cited here do not quantify how much a particular intervention reduces tracking.

How privacy-focused browsers try to reduce fingerprinting

Tor Browser documents a set of protections intended to make it harder to gather enough information to uniquely identify users while preserving necessary functionality. Its fingerprinting-protection documentation names letterboxing, user-agent spoofing, and first-party isolation.

Letterboxing and standardized dimensions

Letterboxing adds margins around the browser content so reported window dimensions fall into broader size buckets rather than revealing an exact size. This can make window dimensions less useful for singling out a browser.

User-agent spoofing and first-party isolation

User-agent spoofing changes the browser information presented to sites. First-party isolation limits how information is shared across different sites. These measures are part of a broader browser design; neither is a guarantee that a site cannot distinguish a user.

Tor Project also explains that ordinary private tabs do not provide Tor Browser’s combination of protections, including hiding the source IP address and device details that may be used for fingerprinting. Its overview of Tor Browser describes that broader distinction. More generally, the W3C notes that fingerprinting mitigations involve trade-offs in usability, functionality, implementation cost, and security, and that even stronger mitigations are imperfect.

What antidetect browsers change

An antidetect browser is software that creates browser profiles and provides controls over information a site may observe. As one vendor example, Multilogin lists settings for WebRTC, timezone, geolocation, languages, screen resolution, fonts, media devices, Navigator values, WebGL, Canvas, AudioContext, and port-scan protection. Depending on the setting, its documentation describes options such as masking, customizing, using real values, or disabling a signal. These are controls described in Multilogin’s fingerprint-settings documentation, updated July 31, 2026; they are not proof that every product exposes the same controls or that any particular configuration defeats a site’s detection.

Consistency is a practical constraint

Changing many values at random can leave a profile presenting a less coherent combination of signals. Multilogin says some of its settings are designed to work together. It also notes that observations tied to the actual computer—such as screen, graphics, audio, and media-device characteristics—can differ when the same profile runs on another machine. Its article on profile differences across computers, updated July 27, 2026, describes that limitation.

Privacy-focused browser protections and antidetect profiles compared

Question Privacy-focused browser (Tor example) Antidetect browser (vendor example)
Main approach Reduce or standardize identifying signals across users, using measures such as letterboxing and user-agent spoofing. Tor Project documentation Offer profile-level controls to mask, customize, expose, or disable selected signals. Multilogin documentation
What to consider Whether the browser’s overall design reduces the ability to single out a user, and what functionality trade-offs may follow. W3C guidance Whether the profile’s browser, device, and network signals make sense together and fit the environment where it runs. Multilogin’s mismatch explanation
What the documentation establishes Documented protections and their stated goal, not guaranteed anonymity. Tor Project documentation Vendor-described settings and limitations, not independent evidence that a product reliably avoids a particular site’s detection. Multilogin settings and mismatch documentation

What these measures do not establish

  • A masked or changed browser field does not by itself make someone anonymous; other browser, device, and network observations may remain available.
  • Vendor documentation shows which controls a vendor says it offers, not that a profile becomes a real, separate device or that a site cannot detect it.
  • The sources cited here do not establish that any named antidetect product reliably avoids detection by a particular site, prevents account restrictions, or guarantees account safety.
