As a practical starting point, DarkSky International recommends 300 lumens or less for paths and 300–800 lumens for outdoor work areas such as a garage. It also advises keeping total home outdoor-light output below 1,000 lumens. These are task-based recommendations, not a universal security standard: placement, beam direction and glare affect what people can actually see.
Choose brightness for the area you need to see
Lumens measure the light source’s total output, not how much light reaches a particular spot. Mounting height, distance, beam spread, aiming and obstructions all change the illumination on a person, path or driveway. Use the figures below as starting points, then assess the lit area from where someone would approach or walk.

DarkSky’s home assessment also recommends total outdoor-light output below 1,000 lumens. That is general guidance, not a legal limit or guarantee of security. Its recommendations are available in the DarkSky Home Outdoor Lighting Assessment.
Why brighter does not automatically mean safer
The U.S. Department of Energy cautions that simply increasing or maintaining high light levels does not necessarily improve safety or security. A bright, poorly aimed fixture can create glare that makes a person harder to identify, while leaving other areas dark. The Department’s guidance notes that vertical illumination can help people identify people and vehicles, and more uniform illumination can reduce concealed dark areas and support camera effectiveness.

Those factors matter more than the fixture’s lumen label alone. The Department’s exterior-lighting guidance discusses mixed historical research; it does not establish that a particular brightness prevents crime or guarantees camera identification.
Aim and control the light to reduce glare and spill
- Shield and aim it: Direct light toward the door, path or work area, not into the sky, neighboring property or approaching eyes.
- Use only the light you need: DarkSky International and the Illuminating Engineering Society advise using the lowest necessary brightness and switching light on only when needed.
- Choose a control: A motion sensor or timer can limit unnecessary operation. A dusk-to-dawn control is another option, but no control mode is best for every home.
- Consider neighbors: Cheshire Constabulary advises positioning lights so they do not cause nuisance from light pollution.
For motion sensing, set the detection zone and duration so the light responds to the intended approach rather than every passing movement. The Five Principles for Responsible Outdoor Lighting, published June 1, 2020 and updated September 30, 2026, summarize the approach: light should be no brighter than necessary and used only when needed. Police guidance from Cheshire Constabulary also recommends lighting at doors for safer arrival and departure after dark.

Pick a color temperature that is comfortable at night
DarkSky recommends outdoor lighting at 2700 K or lower. If you choose a higher color temperature, such as 3000 K, DarkSky advises shielding the fixture, aiming it carefully and activating it only when needed. Color temperature does not replace suitable output or positioning; it is another factor to consider when limiting the effect of outdoor lighting at night.

When choosing a motion-sensor outdoor security light, compare its output with the task and check how it will behave from its actual mounting position. Review the fixture’s shielding and beam direction, possible glare and spill, sensor or timer controls, color temperature and weather suitability. A product category is not a tested recommendation: the right choice depends on the location and coverage required.

Check local rules before installation. DarkSky’s Model Lighting Ordinance User’s Guide is a model document, not proof of the law in your area; local requirements vary. A separate Illuminating Engineering Society residential luminaire criterion limits a category to 1,000 lumens, but that program criterion is not a general home-security prescription.
