A blockchain payment is a digitally signed instruction that a network checks and records on a shared ledger. A wallet manages the keys used to authorize it; network nodes relay and validate it; and a miner or validator includes it in a block. Fees pay for scarce network resources, while the meaning of “settled” depends on the blockchain and the payment’s risk.
What happens when you make a blockchain payment?
The details differ by network, but a typical on-chain payment moves through four stages: a wallet prepares and signs an instruction, the network receives and checks it, a block records it, and the recipient decides when there is enough settlement confidence to act on it.
1. The wallet prepares and signs the instruction
You select a recipient and amount. The wallet creates a transaction and signs it with the private key that authorizes activity from the relevant account or funds. The signature proves that the key holder approved the instruction; it does not disclose the private key itself. Bitcoin.org describes a Bitcoin transaction as a transfer between wallets recorded on the blockchain (How does Bitcoin work?).
A wallet is not a container holding cryptocurrency. It is an interface and key manager. The network ledger records the assets; control of the corresponding private key allows someone to authorize transactions involving them. Ethereum.org describes a wallet as “an interface or application that lets you interact with your Ethereum account, either an externally-owned account or a contract account” (Ethereum accounts). A wallet may be software or a hardware device, but you do not need a hardware wallet simply to send or receive a payment.

2. Nodes receive and check the transaction
The wallet broadcasts the signed transaction to network nodes. Nodes check whether it follows the network’s rules and relay valid transactions. On Ethereum, a transaction is a signed instruction from an account to update network state; nodes and validators process it through the network’s execution and consensus systems (Ethereum transactions).
A transaction hash is an identifier that can help you look up a transaction’s status. Seeing a hash or an incoming-payment notification means the transaction has been detected or broadcast; it does not by itself mean a block has recorded it or that the payment has reached finality.
3. A block records the transaction
Blockchains do not all represent funds in the same way. Bitcoin uses the unspent transaction output (UTXO) model: a transaction spends earlier outputs and creates new outputs, often one for the recipient and another for the sender’s change. A wallet’s displayed balance is therefore an aggregate view of spendable outputs, not necessarily one account total (Bitcoin transactions).

Bitcoin miners include pending transactions in blocks using proof of work. A transaction gets its first confirmation when a block containing it is added to the chain. Each later block built on top adds another confirmation. Bitcoin.org gives about 10 minutes as the average block interval, but block discovery is probabilistic: that average is not a promised wait time, and there is no guaranteed minimum or maximum for an individual block (Some things you need to know).

Its proof-of-stake validators propose and attest to blocks, while the network’s execution and consensus processes check and propagate state changes. 4. The recipient chooses when to treat it as settled
“Settlement” is a practical confidence decision, not a universal instant at which every blockchain payment becomes impossible to reverse. A recipient may see a transaction quickly, but a merchant or other recipient can wait for a suitable confirmation threshold or protocol finality before delivering goods or recording the payment as complete. The appropriate threshold depends on the network and the value and risk of the transaction.

For Bitcoin, confirmations build probabilistically as blocks are added, reducing the risk of a transaction being reversed without making confirmation timing deterministic. Bitcoin.org says a confirmed Bitcoin transaction cannot be reversed by its sender; a refund requires the recipient to send funds back (Some things you need to know). That describes Bitcoin transactions, not every custodial service, payment processor, or blockchain.
Ethereum proof of stake has protocol-defined finality. Checkpoint links are finalized when supported by votes from at least two-thirds of staked ETH, according to Ethereum’s documentation (Proof-of-stake consensus). This threshold is specific to Ethereum’s consensus protocol.

Fees compensate for limited block space or the computation required to process a transaction. The fee system and unit differ by network, so a fee that is sensible on one chain cannot be assumed to apply on another. Fees also change with network demand; a live estimate needs current data for the specific network.

Bitcoin: transaction data and block space
Bitcoin senders pay fees to incentivize miners to include their transactions. Fees depend on transaction data size and demand for block space, not simply on the amount being transferred. A transaction that spends many earlier outputs or uses a more complex construction can carry more data and cost more. Offering a higher fee can improve the chance of priority when the network is busy, but it does not guarantee a particular confirmation time (Some things you need to know).
Ethereum: computation measured in gas
Ethereum measures computational work in gas. A transaction’s fee depends on the gas used and the price per unit of gas, and the fee is paid in ETH. A simple transfer generally requires less computation than a complex smart-contract interaction. Ethereum’s documentation says a transaction fee is charged whether the transaction succeeds or fails; an offered fee that is too low can delay or prevent inclusion, while bidding more than needed can cost extra (Gas and fees).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do all blockchain payments happen on the base chain?
No. Some payment systems use a secondary layer to handle payments away from the base blockchain, then use the base chain for channel opening and closing or other settlement actions. Bitcoin’s Lightning Network is one example: it routes payments through channels off-chain, with channel activity ultimately connected to the Bitcoin blockchain. Bitcoin.org describes Lightning as suitable for small, frequent payments (Lightning Network).

Lightning is specific to the Bitcoin ecosystem; it is not a description of how every blockchain’s payment layers work. A recipient evaluating a payment should establish whether it was made on the base chain or through a separate payment layer, because the transaction flow and settlement mechanics differ.
What should you compare between payment networks?
When choosing or evaluating a blockchain payment route, compare the mechanics that affect control, cost, and the point at which a recipient can reasonably act:
- Custody: Identify who controls the private keys and how access can be recovered. A wallet interface may be self-custodial or connected to a service that holds keys for the user; the arrangement determines who can authorize transactions (Ethereum accounts).
- Ledger model: Bitcoin tracks spendable outputs, while Ethereum represents account-based state. This affects how wallets construct and display transactions (Bitcoin transactions; Ethereum transactions).
- Fee basis: Bitcoin fees respond to transaction data size and block-space demand; Ethereum fees price computation in gas and are paid in ETH (Some things you need to know; Gas and fees).
- Confirmation and finality: Bitcoin confidence rises with successive confirmations; Ethereum proof of stake has explicit finalization based on checkpoint votes (Some things you need to know; Proof-of-stake consensus).
- Payment layer: Determine whether payment is recorded directly on a base chain or routed through another layer, such as Bitcoin Lightning (Lightning Network).
What does this mean for a merchant?
A merchant needs to match a detected payment to the right order and decide what evidence is enough before fulfilling it. A sound workflow is to obtain the correct payment request, monitor for the transaction, apply a confirmation or finality threshold appropriate to the transaction’s value and risk, and reconcile the payment with the order. Bitcoin’s Payment Protocol documentation describes merchant payment detection and treating a payment as final after sufficient confirmations (BIP 70: Payment Protocol).
A payment notification alone should not be treated as proof of settlement. If a merchant uses a processor that converts cryptocurrency into local currency, the processor adds its own service and settlement arrangements; availability and terms depend on the provider and market (Some things you need to know).
