The idea is to better control nutrient availability—not to guarantee that particles enter plant cells, improve yields, or safely disappear in every soil. Each formulation must be evaluated for its release behavior, crop response, field performance, and environmental fate.
What counts as a nanofertilizer?
“Nanofertilizer” describes several research approaches, not one standardized product. Some use nutrient-containing nanoscale materials; others use nanoscale additives or coatings and carriers to manage conventional, soluble fertilizer. A biodegradable material can be part of a carrier or matrix, but that does not by itself make the entire formulation a proven or safe fertilizer.
| Approach | How it is designed to work | What biodegradability means here |
|---|---|---|
| Nanoscale bulk fertilizer input | The nutrient itself is supplied in a nanoscale form. | A biodegradable carrier is not necessarily involved; the design depends on the material. |
| Nanoscale additive | A nanoscale component is added to a fertilizer formulation. | A biodegradable polymer may be one candidate component, but the whole formulation must be assessed. |
| Nanoscale coating, host, or carrier | A coating or matrix holds or associates with nutrients and is intended to influence their release. | Polymers such as chitosan and alginate are candidate carrier or matrix materials in research. |
These categories reflect designs discussed in the 2025 Review of research and innovation on novel fertilizers for crop nutrition and supporting reviews. They should not be read as established commercial product classes with uniform performance.
How can biodegradable nanoparticles release nutrients?
A carrier or coating can affect the movement of nutrients from a formulation into its surroundings. Depending on the material and conditions, release may involve degradation of the carrier, dissolution, diffusion through a matrix, or responses to conditions such as moisture, temperature, or pH. These mechanisms may overlap, and their importance is formulation-specific.

The intended benefit is to influence where and when nutrients become available to a plant. That is a design goal, not proof that release is synchronized with crop demand or that less fertilizer will be needed. A formulation’s behavior depends on its carrier, nutrient, soil or leaf environment, and application conditions.
How do released nutrients reach a crop?
Formulations may be applied to soil or foliage. Nutrient uptake then depends on the nutrient and material, the crop and plant tissue, and the conditions of application. Reviews describe multiple proposed uptake and nutrient-delivery pathways; they do not support a universal claim that nanoparticles automatically enter plant cells or target a particular cellular location.

- FEEDS ALL PLANTS: Miracle-Gro Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food is a plant fertilizer that feeds all outdoor, in-ground and indoor plants, including roses, flowers, houseplants, vegetables, and trees
- PROMOTES GROWTH: Use this all-purpose plant food outdoors and indoors to grow bigger, more beautiful plants (vs unfed plants); starts working instantly to promote quick, beautiful results
- NPK: 24-8-16 outdoor and indoor plant food contains Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P) and Potassium (K) which are key nutrients plants need to thrive
- APPLICATION: To use as plant food indoors, mix 1/2 tsp per gallon of water in a watering can; to feed outdoor plants, mix 1-1/2 tbsp per 1-1/2 gallon of water in any watering can or use with the Miracle-Gro Garden Feeder
- COVERAGE: One 1.5 lb. container of Miracle-Gro Water Soluble All Purpose Plant Food can be used as an outdoor and indoor plant food for houseplants, vegetables, flowers, trees, roses and more; feeds approximately 600 sq. ft. of garden area
For that reason, evidence of nutrient release, evidence of plant uptake, and evidence of a crop benefit need to be considered separately. A measurable change in one does not establish the others.
What does the crop evidence show?
Positive results, with important limits
The 2025 review summarizes a meta-analysis of 29 studies covering nanoscale macro- and micronutrients and carriers. It reports positive effects on germination, growth, or yield across the studies. The same review cautions that sample sizes were small, fertilizer-use-efficiency data were often lacking, cereal crops were represented to a limited extent, and few experiments were conducted at field scale. A separate synthesis in the review included nine studies of nanofertilizer effects on crop growth under field conditions. The authors conclude that more field research is needed before the evidence can establish readiness for commercialization.

Why a nano-urea field result matters
The 2025 review reports a field trial in Punjab, India, involving rice and wheat. When nano-urea was applied alongside a reduced conventional nitrogen rate, yields were 13–17% lower than with the full nitrogen treatment. The trial also found no yield difference between nano-urea and foliar-applied dissolved urea. This result concerns that formulation and trial; it does not predict the performance of every biodegradable carrier. It does caution against assuming that a foliar nano product can replace a crop’s full conventional nitrogen requirement.
What safety and environmental questions remain?
Biodegradability is a design attribute to investigate, not a blanket safety finding. A material’s breakdown and effects can depend on its formulation and the soil or crop environment; the term alone does not establish that the product fully degrades or is harmless.

Reviews identify unresolved questions about nanoparticle accumulation or transformation in soil and plants, uptake by food crops, possible effects on plant physiology, and transfer through the food chain. Field-scale environmental impacts remain poorly understood. Longer-term questions include potential bioaccumulation and effects on soil microbial communities. These are areas of uncertainty and potential risk, not evidence that all nanoparticle formulations are harmful.

A lab or controlled-growth result can help explain a mechanism, but it cannot by itself establish field-scale yield benefits, environmental behavior, or suitability for general use. The reviewed evidence does not establish a validated biodegradable nanoparticle fertilizer for general readers to buy.
