BattleBots builders are using computer simulations to compare design choices before a robot enters the arena, but available evidence does not show that AI-powered fight simulations have improved win rates. The documented work includes exploring weapon shapes and material choices; a separate 2026 partnership gives teams access to an AI cloud platform for developing and training robots for the 2027 Pro League season.
What BattleBots builders simulate before a fight
Rob Bahr, a senior engineer at BattleBots, told SiliconANGLE that some builders run computer simulations to compare weapon concepts. His examples included a bar, a circle, or a single-tooth design, with teams considering how choices might affect offense and defense. That is reported pre-fight scenario exploration—not evidence of a complete, validated simulation of two robots fighting.
Bahr also said teams have begun simulating different plastics and rubbers as 3D printing and materials change. The account does not name the software, teams, material models, or validation methods involved. It therefore supports the claim that builders use simulation to examine design alternatives, but not a claim about how closely those simulations predict damage in the arena.
Three different meanings of “simulation”
| Approach | What it examines | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-fight scenario exploration | Weapon geometry and offensive or defensive choices | Rob Bahr described builders comparing these alternatives; the report does not establish accuracy against fight outcomes. SiliconANGLE, October 6, 2026 |
| Engineering simulation and optimization | Design, structure, weight, strength, and stiffness | SOLIDWORKS case studies document named teams using CAD, simulation, visualization, and topology studies. These are engineering-design examples, not full robot-versus-robot fight simulations. SOLIDWORKS case studies |
| AI infrastructure and prospective AI use | Computing resources for development and training; potential future simulation or autonomy work | CoreWeave announced platform access for teams, while Bahr described AI’s potential role. Neither establishes that every simulation uses AI or that AI has improved results. CoreWeave, June 23, 2026; SiliconANGLE, October 6, 2026 |
Where AI fits—and what is not yet proven
On June 23, 2026, CoreWeave announced it had become BattleBots’ official AI cloud partner. The announcement said teams would have access to its AI Cloud platform while developing and training robots for the 2027 Pro League season. This confirms a partnership and access to infrastructure; it does not say that teams are using a particular AI model, or that AI is part of every design simulation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Bahr forecast that AI could play a key role in computing and simulation and possibly autonomy. That is a view about potential, not a reported outcome. The available sources do not quantify how many teams use AI simulation, its prediction accuracy, or any effect on win rates. They also do not establish a causal link between simulation and winning fights.

HyperShock: CAD, simulation, and visualization
A SOLIDWORKS case study documents HyperShock using the company’s tools for CAD, simulation, and visualization. This illustrates engineering work on a robot’s design; it should not be mistaken for proof that software modeled an entire fight.

Witch Doctor: topology studies and iteration
A SOLIDWORKS case study describes Witch Doctor using topology studies to explore weight, strength, and stiffness. Its lead designer said the team had cut five pounds from its current design while strengthening key areas, and that it goes through more than 20 iterations on each robot before competition. Those are team statements in a vendor-authored case study, not independent comparative statistics.
Why simulation is one part of the build process
Simulation lets a team examine design questions before committing to hardware, but it does not remove the need for engineering judgment and practical experience. BattleBots’ builder guidance points to engineering, electronics, CAD, physics, and design, alongside learning through research, community, mistakes, and repeated refinement. The organization describes building a combat robot as a journey rather than a formula for a guaranteed championship design.

For newcomers asking how to build one, BattleBots recommends starting in local competitions and developing skills before moving to higher weight classes. Its general resources are not a substitute for the experience and acceptance required to compete on the television show. It names Kickin’ Bot, Grant Imahara’s illustrated combat-robot building guide, and the RioBotz Combat Robot Tutorial as learning resources.

BattleBots’ official rules page lists draft 2027 rules as Version 2027.01, last updated October 1, 2026. The entry materials call for technical details, a technical drawing, photorealistic exterior renderings, biographical information, and a team video. BattleBots warns applicants to wait for acceptance before building because construction is dangerous, time-consuming, and expensive. The organization says rule documents may change, so applicants should check the live page for current requirements.
