Banks generally do not identify an attack by looking for “AI” alone. They combine signals about sign-ins, devices, customer behavior, transactions and identity, then apply additional checks when the risk is higher. That layered approach can help catch account takeover and AI-enabled impersonation, but it cannot guarantee that every deepfake or fraudulent payment will be detected.

The U.S. federal banking guidance and Federal Reserve statements discussed here describe risk-management approaches—not a single required product or a uniform system used by every bank. A bank’s specific tools, authentication options and detection accuracy are not established across the industry.

What banks look for in an AI-assisted attack

An AI-generated voice or video is one possible part of a broader fraud attempt. A bank may assess whether the requested action, the way the account is being accessed and the customer’s usual patterns fit together. Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr described banks as “frontline defenders” against deepfake-enabled fraud because they are directly involved in financial transactions and hold customer data.

Risky sign-ins and account changes

Authentication controls are intended to reduce the chance that stolen credentials, phishing, malware or weak single-factor checks will give an attacker access. The federal banking agencies’ interagency authentication guidance warns that attacks on systems relying on a single factor can lead to unauthorized access, data theft or destruction, ransomware effects, account fraud and identity theft. Banks can assess the access point, user, device and potential harm, and apply stronger checks where the risk warrants them.

Unusual behavior and transaction patterns

Fraud monitoring can flag changes such as a surge in login activity, unusual transaction speed or size, changes in behavior, or repeated account lockouts. A large or unusual transfer may merit scrutiny of both the sender’s claimed identity and the recipient. A bank may hold a flagged payment for additional review before authorizing it; a flag is a reason to assess risk, not proof that a customer or transaction is fraudulent.

Possible signs of synthetic voice or video

In a speech on April 17, 2025, Barr described possible defensive techniques including voice analysis, facial analysis, behavioral biometrics and review of audio or video metadata. If those checks raise concern, a bank may seek additional verification. These are possible approaches, not evidence that every bank uses them or that they can reliably identify every deepfake.

Exposure through service providers and operations

Security risk is not limited to customer sign-ins. Interagency security guidance also addresses customer-information systems, service-provider risks, risk-based oversight, control testing and incident-response planning. Those controls help banks manage weaknesses that could affect account data or services even when a customer has done nothing wrong.

How layered account protection works

  1. Assess the risk. A bank considers the account, access method, device, requested change or payment, and potential harm. Risk-based guidance allows stronger checks for circumstances such as remote access, account changes or higher-risk payments rather than prescribing one control for every situation.
  2. Verify access with appropriate authentication. When a single factor and other safeguards are not enough, the interagency authentication guidance says multifactor authentication (MFA) or controls of equivalent strength can better mitigate risk. MFA is one layer; it does not by itself prove a caller’s identity or replace ongoing monitoring.
  3. Monitor activity and review exceptions. Banks can compare current access and payment activity with expected patterns, then route suspicious events for additional review. The purpose is to catch risk across multiple signals rather than rely on a single “AI detector.”
  4. Train staff and customers. Interagency security standards call for staff training that includes recognizing fraud and identity-theft schemes. Barr also advised customers to enable MFA where available and verify unusual requests through a separate channel—even when the requester seems familiar.
  5. Investigate and contain incidents. Incident-response planning can include investigating and containing activity, preserving evidence, and notifying regulators or law enforcement where appropriate. A bank may notify customers when warranted.
  6. Share information when authorized. A July 2026 Federal Reserve letter explains that section 314(b) permits voluntary information-sharing between financial institutions under a liability safe harbor to help identify and report certain potentially illicit activity; FinCEN encourages participation. This is institution-to-institution sharing, not a customer-facing identity check.

Can a deepfake get into your bank account?

A convincing voice or video could make an impersonation attempt harder to assess, particularly if someone treats familiarity as proof of identity. But a deepfake alone does not establish that an attacker has the credentials or access needed to take over an account. Account security depends on the bank’s layered controls and on how the customer responds to unusual requests. No reviewed federal source establishes an industry-wide deepfake detection rate or proves that any particular bank’s checks stop every attempt.

What you can do to protect your account

  • Turn on MFA if your bank offers it. Check the bank’s official security settings or ask the bank which methods it supports. A security key is only an optional example of an MFA device: confirm that your bank supports it, and do not assume that owning one alone prevents account takeover.
  • Verify unusual requests on a separate channel. If someone asks you to move money, disclose a code or change account details, contact the person or institution using a number or channel you already trust—not the contact details in the unexpected message or call.
  • Review alerts and account activity. Use available bank alerts and check for unfamiliar sign-ins, transfers or account changes. Contact the bank promptly through its official channel if something looks wrong.
  • Know how to report a problem. Before an urgent situation, find the bank’s official process for reporting suspicious activity and recovering access. Follow the bank’s instructions if it restricts a transaction or account while reviewing a concern.

How to compare a bank’s account protections

Federal guidance does not rank banks or prescribe a single authentication product. To understand what a particular bank offers, ask about these practical points:

  • Which MFA methods are available, and can you enable them yourself?
  • Do new devices, new payment recipients, contact-detail changes or unusual transfers trigger extra verification?
  • Which account alerts and customer controls can you turn on?
  • How do you report suspicious activity and regain access if locked out?
  • How does the bank communicate when it flags or restricts a transaction?

What happens after a suspicious transaction is flagged?

A bank may investigate, contain activity, preserve evidence and make regulator or law-enforcement notifications where appropriate. The customer may also receive notice when warranted. A September 2026 Federal Reserve letter summarizing a joint statement clarifies that banks may discuss suspicious transactions or possible account closure with customers as long as they do not reveal the existence of a suspicious activity report (SAR). As a result, a bank can explain a restriction or concern without disclosing whether a SAR was filed.
