Researchers have observed zero-bias photocurrent in CuCrP2S6 crystals from 15 K through room temperature—even when the crystal’s time-averaged structure is centrosymmetric. They propose that moving copper ions create fleeting local regions that break symmetry, allowing the material to generate current without a p–n junction. The result offers a materials-design lead, not evidence that a commercial solar cell has exceeded a conventional efficiency limit.
How can a material generate photocurrent without a p–n junction?
The bulk photovoltaic effect (BPVE) is the generation of photocurrent in a material without relying on the p–n junction used in conventional solar cells. In a particular BPVE mechanism called the shift-current response, light drives a net displacement of electronic charge through the crystal.
In the 2026 study, Ryoga Murata and colleagues measured bulk single crystals of layered van der Waals CuCrP2S6, or CCPS. They tested current direction, light polarization, power and wavelength, and compared silver and platinum electrodes. The reported zero-bias photocurrent appeared along the crystal’s in-plane a-axis, not its b-axis, over the measured temperature range. The current’s absolute magnitude depended on the contacts, but the qualitative direction and temperature behavior remained. The peer-reviewed paper in Advanced Functional Materials describes the measurements.
Why does CuCrP2S6 still produce current when its average structure is centrosymmetric?
Crystal symmetry changes with temperature. At lower temperatures, CCPS has a non-centrosymmetric Pc structure. As it warms, copper ions become mobile and the material enters a dynamically disordered interval described as roughly 145–190 K. By room temperature, its time-averaged structure is centrosymmetric C2/c.

| Temperature regime | Structural description | Photocurrent observation |
|---|---|---|
| Low-temperature phase | Non-centrosymmetric Pc | Zero-bias current measured along the a-axis |
| Roughly 145–190 K | Dynamically disordered; copper ions become mobile | The a-axis response persists |
| Room temperature | Time-averaged, centrosymmetric C2/c | The a-axis response remains; the Institute of Science Tokyo reported its magnitude as approximately 1.5 times that in the low-temperature phase |
In a perfectly static centrosymmetric structure, inversion symmetry would rule out this shift-current response. The authors’ proposed explanation is that the average structure does not capture what an electron experiences at every instant: fluctuating copper positions create temporary local configurations that break inversion symmetry and form nanoscale polar regions.
The timing makes that account plausible. The electronic response to light occurs on femtosecond timescales, while the relevant lattice fluctuations occur on picosecond or longer timescales. The electrons can therefore respond to a momentary local configuration before the atomic motion averages out into the centrosymmetric structure seen over longer times. This is the researchers’ interpretation of the results, not proof that every detail of the mechanism has been directly established.

What does “beyond conventional limits” mean here?
The phrase refers to a possible direction for materials research, not a demonstrated efficiency record. The Institute of Science Tokyo’s release gives about 33% as the theoretical limit for an ideal single-junction silicon cell; that figure is background context, not a result of the CCPS experiment. The study measured photocurrent in crystals, not solar-cell conversion efficiency, and did not test a commercial photovoltaic device. The Institute of Science Tokyo release, republished by Phys.org, reports the approximately 1.5-fold room-temperature photocurrent comparison.
CCPS is one compound studied as bulk single crystals. The findings do not establish the same effect in conventional silicon panels or in solar materials generally. They suggest that dynamic atomic motion could be considered when designing future photovoltaic, optoelectronic or energy-harvesting materials; those applications remain prospects rather than demonstrated products.
