Atlassian’s proposal is to make Jira the shared coordination layer for people and AI agents: teams can assign work to an agent, keep it tied to a Jira work item and team plans, and track when human input or review is needed. The broader Teamwork Collection connects that approach across Jira, Confluence, Loom, and Rovo. These are product capabilities Atlassian has announced and documented—not independent proof that agent-assisted work is faster or better.

What “agents in Jira” means

Atlassian announced agents in Jira as an open beta on February 25, 2026. Its design premise is that teams iterate on work, agents execute assigned tasks, and Jira keeps the work connected to the team’s plans. That is different from treating an agent conversation as a standalone session: the Jira work item is intended to provide a shared point of reference for assignment, progress, and follow-up. Atlassian’s announcement describes the product goal; the stated speed and quality benefits remain promotional claims.

In practical terms, the agent is another participant in a workflow, not a replacement for the person accountable for the outcome. A team still has to define the task, provide suitable context, decide what permissions are appropriate, and review the result. Jira’s role is to make those handoffs visible and connected to ordinary team work.

How Jira fits into Atlassian’s wider teamwork approach

Atlassian’s May 6, 2026 Teamwork Collection update described a connected setup spanning Jira, Confluence, Loom, and Rovo. The idea is to bring project and ticket context together with team knowledge and communication, so an agent’s task is not detached from the requirements and decisions that informed it. Atlassian also named third-party tools including Amplitude, Canva, Cursor, Figma, Gamma, and GitHub Copilot in its ecosystem framing. That list should not be read as proof that every tool has the same Jira integration or capabilities. The Teamwork Collection update outlines the company’s vision and named tools.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Rovo is Atlassian’s agent offering, while the announced model also allows for third-party agents. The distinction matters: a team may consider Atlassian-provided agents for work within its collaboration environment, and a specialized agent for a particular task such as software development. Which context an agent can access, and what it can do with that context, depends on the specific integration and configuration.

What assigning work to an agent can look like

Assigning an agent to a Jira work item

Atlassian Support documents assigning work items to a Rovo agent from Atlassian, a Rovo agent created by someone in a space, or an agent built by a third party. The live support page is the appropriate place to check current eligibility and rollout details, which may change. Atlassian’s agent collaboration guidance describes the documented assignment model.

Using Cursor for engineering work

On May 20, 2026, Atlassian announced that Jira teams could assign work directly to Cursor’s cloud agent. The announcement described steering an agent from Jira, an IDE, or Cursor on the web, with Jira notifications when input or review was needed. This is a concrete example of a coding agent connected to a Jira workflow; it does not establish that the same controls are available for every third-party agent. Atlassian’s Cursor in Jira announcement describes that integration.

The useful design question is not simply whether an agent can produce an output. It is whether the team can give it the right context, redirect it when requirements change, and see when its work is ready for a person to assess. Jira can serve as the coordination point, but the quality of the handoff still depends on how the task and review are set up.

Jira’s evolving workflow for AI-assisted software development

In a July 15, 2026 update, Atlassian described Jira capabilities for planning work with AI, creating agent-ready specifications, assigning coding agents, monitoring agent sessions, automating engineering loops, and measuring AI cost against output. Its September 14–21 cloud change log later described bulk assignment of agents to work items and expanded interactions between agents or MCP clients and Jira objects. Together, these announcements point toward a workflow that covers more than task assignment: planning, execution, visibility, and measurement. They do not establish that every capability is generally available to every Jira customer. Atlassian’s July update and the September cloud changes log document the company’s stated direction and changes.

How to evaluate an agent workflow

Before assigning important work to an agent, evaluate the workflow end to end rather than judging only the agent’s output.

What Atlassian’s productivity figures do—and do not—show

Atlassian’s July 2026 article reported findings from a longitudinal study it said it conducted with DX: AI usage rose 65%, developer velocity increased by as much as 15%, and many organizations averaged 10% velocity gains. These are company-reported study results, not universal forecasts or independent estimates. The same article noted that overall developer velocity did not keep pace with the increase in AI usage, so the figures do not show that using AI alone caused a corresponding productivity gain. Atlassian’s account of the study and Jira updates provides the company’s context.

Availability and what to verify

Availability has changed over time: the February 25 announcement called agents in Jira an open beta, while later support documentation and cloud change logs describe subsequent capabilities. Do not assume the beta label still describes the current service, or that a documented feature is enabled for every customer. Check the current support guidance and relevant product documentation for the latest status. The announcements cited here do not establish pricing, plan requirements, regional access, or security configuration.
