Astronomers look for several different signals: a planet crossing in front of a white dwarf, extra infrared light, a companion resolved in an image, gravitational lensing, or shifts in a pulsar’s pulse timing. Each method reveals a different part of the picture. Some can identify an orbiting object; others show only that planetary material or a possible companion is present. A dust disc or debris left by a destroyed planet can imitate or complicate a planet signal.
What counts as detecting a planet?
A white dwarf is the compact remnant of a star. Detecting a planet around one means finding evidence for an orbiting object despite the star’s small size, low luminosity, and often faint signal. The method matters: a recurring transit or a resolved companion’s light can point to an object in orbit, while metals in the white dwarf’s atmosphere trace material that may have come from a disrupted planetary body.
A detection usually begins as a signal that needs interpretation. Astronomers compare it with alternative explanations, such as a dust disc or another kind of companion, and seek additional observations where possible. A planet candidate is not automatically a confirmed planet, and evidence of planetary material is not proof that an intact planet remains.
Which methods can reveal a white-dwarf planet?
| Method | Signal measured | What it can reveal—and its limit |
|---|---|---|
| Transit photometry | A recurring dip in the star’s light | Can identify an object crossing the star, but requires favorable alignment and careful validation. |
| Infrared photometry and spectroscopy | Infrared light beyond the expected stellar emission, or spectral signatures | Can reveal a cool companion, dust, or accreted planetary material; excess light or atmospheric metals alone do not establish an intact planet. |
| Direct imaging | Light from a companion separated from the white dwarf in an image | Can show sufficiently bright, widely separated companions; a non-detection applies only to the observed range of brightness and separation. |
| Microlensing | Magnification of a background star by a foreground star–planet system | Can reveal a planet without a transit or a resolved image, but events are rare and generally difficult to follow up. |
| Pulsar timing | Changes in the arrival times of regular pulses | Can reveal orbital companions in systems with a pulsar; it is not a general method for ordinary isolated white dwarfs. |
How transit searches work
Look for a repeated dip
When an orbiting body passes across the white dwarf as seen from Earth, it blocks some of the star’s light. Because a white dwarf is very small, an Earth-sized object can block a substantial fraction of its visible face. The event may last only minutes, however, and the white dwarf’s faintness makes it challenging to collect enough light with exposures short enough to preserve the transit’s shape.

The orbit must also line up closely with our line of sight. A single dip is therefore a candidate signal, not a secure discovery: astronomers need to check whether it recurs at a consistent interval and rule out other explanations through validation and follow-up observations.
Understand what survey estimates mean
A 2019 Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society study modeled white-dwarf transit detection with the planned LSST survey. Simulating 3.5 million white dwarfs over 10 years, for companions with orbital periods under 10 days, it estimated typical detection rates from 5 × 10−6 for Ceres-sized bodies to 4 × 10−4 for Earth-sized worlds. Under the model’s assumption that every white dwarf had a companion of the relevant size—a 100 percent occurrence rate—the corresponding yields were roughly 50 to 4,000 detections. These are simulated yields, not observed planets, and depend on the study’s assumed survey properties and occurrence rates.
The same study estimated detection rates around 10−3 for terrestrial planets in the continuously habitable zone under its model. That figure is likewise a modeled rate, not a count of planets discovered or a guarantee of future detections.

What infrared light and spectra can tell us
Compare the star’s light with its expected emission
Astronomers measure a white dwarf’s spectral energy distribution—the amount of light it emits across different wavelengths—and compare it with the expected emission from the star itself. Extra infrared light can come from a cool stellar or substellar companion, a planet, or a dust disc. It flags something that needs explanation; it does not, on its own, identify the source as a planet.

The same review discussed WD 1856+534 b as the only white-dwarf exoplanet candidate discovered via transit at the time that review was published. That is a historical statement from 2022, not a current census of candidates.
Use spectroscopy to trace planetary material
Spectroscopy separates light by wavelength and can reveal which elements are present. Metals in a white dwarf’s observable atmosphere can indicate that the star has accreted rocky planetary debris: those elements are not expected to remain visible there indefinitely. This is evidence about material in the system and may reveal its composition, but it does not establish that an intact planet is still orbiting.

The scale of these signals depends on the sample. In a 2019 Spitzer/Hubble study, three stars with infrared excess attributed to debris discs gave a nominal frequency of 1.5 percent in that sample; atmospheric metals were found in 45 ± 4 percent of the sample. The authors also reported an infrared excess at 3–4 μm in the IRAC observations for only one of 30 polluted white dwarfs. These figures describe that study’s sample and observations, not universal rates for white dwarfs.
A JWST excess remains open to interpretation
A peer-reviewed 2025 MEAD Survey II study reported excess emission from WD 0644+025 at 15 μm with a significance of 7.3σ and at 10 μm with a significance of 3.6σ. The authors said the signal “may be associated with either a planetary companion or a circumstellar dust disk.” One modeled companion interpretation had a mass of 6.8 Jupiter masses, a temperature of 261 ± 9 K, and an orbital distance under 11.8 au. Those are properties of that model, not a secure measurement of a planet: the excess could instead be explained by a dust disc, and the authors also discussed lower-mass possibilities for a close isolated companion.

When astronomers can image a companion directly
Direct imaging separates a companion’s light from the white dwarf’s light, then measures the companion. Since a white dwarf is intrinsically faint compared with its progenitor star, the contrast with a companion can be favorable, particularly at infrared wavelengths. Success still depends on the system’s distance, the companion’s angular separation, temperature and mass, and the instrument’s sensitivity.

This makes direct imaging most useful for companions that are sufficiently wide and luminous. A non-detection rules out only objects bright enough to detect at the separations the observations covered; it does not rule out a close-in or faint planet.
A 2002 study estimated, using models, that infrared imaging of suitable nearby targets with 8-m-class telescopes could detect companions around 3 Jupiter masses or greater. This was a historical sensitivity estimate, not a specification for every current telescope. A 2022 review identified WD 0806-661 b—approximately 8 Jupiter masses at roughly 2,500 au—as the single widely separated gas giant then directly imaged in orbit around a white dwarf. That count reflects the review’s 2022 coverage, not an up-to-date inventory.

Microlensing: use gravity to reveal a planet
If a foreground star and its planet pass in front of a background star, their gravity can magnify the background star’s light. The planet’s effect on the magnification can reveal its presence without requiring a transit or a resolved image. Such events are generally rare and one-off, which makes follow-up and detailed characterization difficult.

A 2022 review listed MOA-2010-BLG-477Lb as a 1.4-Jupiter-mass planet at about 2.8 au detected by microlensing around a white-dwarf lens system. Microlensing provides evidence through the gravitational effect on a background source rather than through light from the planet itself.
Pulsar timing: track changes in pulse arrival times
Pulsars emit regular pulses. If a pulsar moves around the center of mass of a system with an orbiting companion, its changing position affects when the pulses arrive, allowing astronomers to infer the companion. The technique applies to pulsar systems, not to ordinary isolated white dwarfs.
The 2022 review listed PSR B1620-26 (AB) b, a 2.5-Jupiter-mass planet in a binary system containing a pulsar and a white dwarf. It is an example of a companion inferred through timing in a special system, rather than a planet detected by timing a white dwarf’s own light.
Why no single signal settles every case
The methods complement one another because they measure different effects and favor different kinds of companions. A transit requires an aligned orbit; infrared observations can flag cool companions or dust; direct imaging favors luminous objects at wide separations; microlensing uses gravity; and timing depends on a pulsar. Spectral evidence of accreted metals concerns planetary material rather than necessarily a surviving planet.
Radial-velocity searches face particular difficulties around white dwarfs because of the stars’ low luminosity and other observational constraints. The 2022 review reported no radial-velocity detections in the census it described; that dated summary should not be read as a permanent or current census of all candidates.
For any claim, the key questions are what signal was measured, what alternative sources could produce it, and whether follow-up establishes an orbiting object rather than debris or a model-dependent interpretation. A detected excess, atmospheric pollution, or a modeled companion can be scientifically important without amounting to a confirmed planet.
