Dawn—the first spacecraft to orbit two different celestial bodies—shows how a Mars gravity assist can complement onboard propulsion on a journey to multiple targets. Its ion engines supplied most of the trajectory control; Mars changed the route and helped set up the trip to Vesta.
What a gravity assist does
A gravity assist is a planned flyby of a moving planet or moon. In the flyby body’s frame, a spacecraft leaves at roughly the same speed at which it arrived, but traveling in a different direction. Because the planet or moon is itself moving around the Sun, that directional change can alter the spacecraft’s speed and orbital energy relative to the Sun.
The spacecraft exchanges a tiny amount of energy and momentum with the moving body; the maneuver does not create energy. Depending on the flyby geometry, the spacecraft may gain or lose speed relative to the Sun. A gravity assist is therefore not always a speed boost, and it does not replace a mission’s propulsion system.

How Dawn combined a Mars flyby with ion propulsion
Dawn launched in 2007 and used solar-electric ion propulsion for most of its trajectory control. Its Mars flyby in February 2009 changed its velocity and orbital plane, helping configure the journey to Vesta. Ion propulsion then supported the long transfers and orbit changes required to study Vesta and Ceres. NASA describes the combination in its Dawn mission history and propulsion overview.
The spacecraft carried three ion thrusters. NASA lists their thrust range as 19 to 91 millinewtons—low thrust applied over long periods, rather than a brief, powerful push: Dawn spacecraft details.

What the Mars encounter changed
Dawn Chief Engineer Marc Rayman said the flyby’s principal effect was “to change the plane of Dawn’s orbit by about 5°.” He also reported that it raised the energy of Dawn’s orbit around the Sun by an equivalent of about 1.1 km/s and provided a combined delta-v of about 2.6 km/s. These figures describe Dawn’s specific Mars encounter, not values that apply to gravity assists generally. Rayman noted that Vesta and Ceres orbit farther from the ecliptic than most planets, making a plane change by propulsion alone potentially costly. The details appear in the NASA Dawn FAQ.
The flyby supplemented Dawn’s propulsion; it did not propel the spacecraft all the way between targets. The engines supplied sustained thrust, while the encounter altered the trajectory in a way useful to the mission’s route.

Dawn’s sequence of destinations and discoveries
Dawn arrived at Vesta in July 2011 and spent about 14 months orbiting it. It arrived at Ceres in March 2015, departed Vesta in September 2017, and ended its mission in November 2018. In chronological order, the key events were the Mars flyby, Vesta arrival, Ceres arrival, Vesta departure, and mission end. NASA’s mission timeline lists the dates; its Dawn overview describes the spacecraft as the first to orbit two different celestial bodies.
The targets offered a scientific comparison, not just two stops on a route. Vesta is a rocky, differentiated protoplanet; Ceres is a water-rich dwarf planet with evidence of ice and salts. Studying both with a shared spacecraft and instrument suite helped scientists investigate why these small worlds evolved differently. Why reaching multiple targets is difficult
A multi-destination trajectory must bring together several moving parts:
- Timing and alignment: The planets and targets must be in useful positions at launch, during the flyby, and at each encounter.
- Orbital-plane changes: A target may orbit in a plane that is costly to reach using propulsion alone.
- Propulsion limits: The available thrust and the time it can be applied determine how much the spacecraft can change its orbit.
- Transfer duration and science time: Designers must balance cruise time against time available to operate at each destination.
Dawn’s 2007 launch opportunity left less time for ion thrusting before the alignment of Vesta and Ceres would make the transfer between them inconveniently long, according to Rayman’s NASA FAQ. The mission’s route illustration is a baseline depiction that omits thrusting at Vesta and Ceres; it should not be read as a complete, burn-by-burn flight plan.

How to compare multi-target missions
Counting destinations alone does not show how a mission reached them or what it accomplished. A useful comparison asks what the flyby changed, how much propulsion remained necessary, whether the spacecraft orbited or merely passed each target, how long the transfers took, and what scientific comparison the destinations enabled. Dawn stands out in this example because it entered orbit around both Vesta and Ceres, rather than simply flying past two objects.
