Without another qualifier, “dwarf star” usually means a main-sequence star: an active star that produces energy by fusing hydrogen in its core. A white dwarf and a neutron star are different: both are compact stellar remnants, formed at different stages of a star’s life. A white dwarf is the cooling core left by a lower-mass star; a neutron star is the collapsed core of a massive star after a supernova.
What does “dwarf star” mean?
The term is easy to misread because it appears in several names. NASA’s glossary says that “with no other qualification, the term refers to a main sequence star.” A main-sequence star shines primarily by fusing hydrogen into helium in its core, as the Sun does. NASA’s Universe glossary and its overview of star types distinguish that active-star meaning from “white dwarf,” which names a stellar remnant.
Red dwarfs are a low-mass, relatively cool subset of main-sequence stars. They continue to fuse hydrogen; “red dwarf” does not mean “white dwarf.” Brown dwarfs are another distinct category: NASA describes them as substellar objects that do not sustain the hydrogen fusion of main-sequence stars.
How the three objects differ
| Feature | Ordinary dwarf (main-sequence star) | White dwarf | Neutron star |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | An active star, usually what “dwarf star” means without qualification | The compact core left after a star sheds its outer layers | The compact collapsed core of a massive star that exploded as a supernova |
| Energy and activity | Produces energy mainly through hydrogen fusion in its core | No longer produces new energy through core fusion; it cools over time | A stellar remnant formed by core collapse; the cited NASA summaries do not describe it as a hydrogen-fusing star |
| Typical scale | Varies widely; red dwarfs are among the smallest main-sequence stars | Roughly Earth-sized, despite having substantial stellar mass | More than the Sun’s mass in a sphere about 20 kilometers across, in NASA’s approximate description |
| Formation or life stage | Stable hydrogen-fusing phase of a star’s life | Late stage for stars that shed their outer layers | Forms when the core of a massive star collapses |
These are broad descriptions, not fixed measurements for every object. NASA’s glossary, star-types overview, and general star overview use approximate scales and explain the different life-cycle pathways.

How a white dwarf forms
A Sun-like star eventually reaches a late phase in which it sheds its outer atmosphere. The hot, compact core that remains is a white dwarf. It is no longer powered by core hydrogen fusion; instead, it gradually cools. NASA describes a typical white dwarf as roughly Earth-sized and notes that one can pack roughly the Sun’s mass into a ball about 1% of the Sun’s size. These are approximate examples, not a claim that all white dwarfs have the same mass or radius.
NASA’s educational timeline estimates that the Sun has about 5 billion years remaining on the main sequence before becoming a red giant, and that it will become a white dwarf in about 10 billion years. These are broad timeline estimates, not countdowns to precisely dated events. See NASA’s star-life-cycle overview.

How a neutron star forms
A neutron star forms through a different route: the core of a massive star collapses, in connection with a supernova. The result is an exceptionally compact remnant. NASA’s glossary gives a representative diameter of about 12 miles (20 kilometers); its star-types page compares the width to Manhattan Island’s length. Both are approximate ways to convey the scale, not exact dimensions for every neutron star.
Not every massive star has the same outcome. NASA’s overview describes a broad range of conditions for neutron-star formation and notes that heavier stars can produce black holes. The available educational summaries do not establish one exact progenitor-mass cutoff that applies to every star.

How common are they?
NASA’s Universe glossary says main-sequence stars, also called dwarfs, make up around 90% of stars in the universe. It also says red dwarfs account for 75% of stars in our galaxy; NASA’s star-types page describes this as around 75% of the Milky Way’s stellar population. Those figures refer to different scopes—the universe and the Milky Way—and are educational-page estimates, not a newly conducted census. The glossary also defines a neutron star as the compact remnant core of a massive star that exploded as a supernova. NASA Universe glossary; NASA star types.
