Saturated, oxygen-poor burial conditions can slow decay, but excavation exposes the object to drying that can cause shrinkage, collapse, and cracks. Conservators assess each find and choose a treatment suited to its wood and condition; there is no single method that works for every artifact.
Why excavation puts waterlogged wood at risk
Wood buried in saturated, low-oxygen conditions may survive for a long time because decay is slowed. Over time, however, water can occupy spaces in wood whose structure has weakened. Once the artifact is excavated, uncontrolled drying can make that structure shrink or collapse, causing cracks and irreversible damage. As a 2025 study puts it, “After excavation, conservation is necessary to prevent damage of objects due to uncontrolled drying.”
Conservation therefore is not simply a matter of drying an object. The aim is to support or stabilize the weakened wood, manage the removal of water, and monitor for changes in dimensions and structure.
How conservation is planned and carried out
- Assess the object. Conservators consider the wood species, how degraded it is, its dimensions and condition, and the risks posed by treatment and drying. An object’s suitability for a method cannot be inferred from the fact that another sample of the same broad material was treated successfully.
- Select a stabilizing treatment. Treatment agents can support or replace water within degraded wood. The choice depends on the object and the desired balance of dimensional stability and structural integrity.
- Control drying. Drying is managed as part of the treatment. Some approaches use freeze-drying after impregnation; others use different drying procedures. The treatment schedule matters, not just the name of the agent.
- Check the result. Conservators examine dimensional change and damage such as shrinkage, collapse, or cracking. Research has used imaging and other measurements to assess changes within treated wood.
What treatment methods are used?
Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and freeze-drying
PEG is a polymer consolidant used to support degraded wood before drying. It may be introduced in stages, and some documented approaches combine PEG impregnation with freeze-drying. Treatment variations can include different PEG formulations and a cryoprotectant; schedules are specific to the conservation procedure, not a general-purpose recipe.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A 2025 study tested 80 samples—40 pine and 40 oak—using several methods. In those samples, PEG followed by freeze-drying stabilized volume but was also associated with structural cracks; cracks were less frequent in the treatment that used PEG 400 as a cryoprotectant. These results describe that study’s samples and protocols, not a guarantee of how PEG will perform on another artifact.
Other tested approaches
PEG is one option among several investigated for waterlogged archaeological wood. Studies have compared alcohol-ether resin, melamine-formaldehyde, lactitol/trehalose, sucrose, and silicone oil, as well as variations in PEG treatment and drying. The U.S. National Park Service has also evaluated supercritical carbon-dioxide drying alongside air-drying and PEG treatment followed by freeze-drying. That report establishes it as a research option, not a procedure for public use.

Why there is no universal best method
Treatment performance depends on the wood, its degree of degradation, and the specific protocol. Researchers compare not only whether an object keeps its shape, but also whether cracks or collapse appear and where a treatment agent ends up in the wood. For example, a 2024 study of waterlogged archaeological pine found that melamine-formaldehyde stabilized degraded cell walls. Its observations also showed empty cell lumens with melamine-formaldehyde and alcohol-ether resin, while PEG, silicone oil, sucrose, and lactitol/trehalose were also present in lumens. These are structural findings from tested pine, not a simple ranking for all artifacts.
In one 2025 comparison, alcohol-ether resin with solvent drying had the strongest stabilizing effect among the tested methods and showed no visible structural damage, while PEG freeze-drying stabilized volume but was associated with cracks. A separate 2022 study of 83 samples from a reference collection established between 2008 and 2011 reported among its better results with PEG plus freeze-drying, alcohol-ether resin, and Kauramin 800, while noting that every method had failures. Different samples and schedules can produce different outcomes; neither comparison identifies a universal winner or establishes a field-wide preservation success rate.
