Archaeologists do not identify or date human remains by looking at the house alone. They document exactly where the bones lie and how they relate to floors, walls, pits, and other deposits; have a human osteologist assess the skeleton; and build a chronology from context, artifacts, scientific dating, and other evidence. DNA can add clues, but it is not a stand-alone identification test. The guidance discussed here is from Historic England and applies to archaeological work in England; rules and procedures differ elsewhere.

What does “identify” mean in an archaeological investigation?

The word can refer to several different questions, and each requires different evidence. A specialist may determine that remains are human, describe skeletal characteristics, estimate aspects of an individual’s life, or assess biological relationships. Establishing a specific person’s name is a much higher bar.

  • Human or non-human: An osteological assessment examines the bones and their characteristics.
  • What can be learned about the individual: Depending on completeness and preservation, skeletal features may inform estimates such as age and sex, and document disease, injury, or other observations.
  • When the person died or the remains were deposited: Archaeological context and dating methods address different parts of this question; a date for a sample does not automatically establish when or why it was placed in a house.
  • Who the person was: A named identification requires multiple converging lines of evidence. Historic England notes that personal identification of ancient remains is unlikely to be unequivocal.

Historic England’s Human Remains Advice and APABE’s Science and the Dead address the specialist, ethical, and interpretive issues involved in England.

Why the exact location and archaeological context matter

The first task is to record the find before drawing conclusions about it. The team documents the bones’ position and arrangement in relation to walls, floors, pits, cuts, fills, and other deposits, as well as the location of associated artifacts and samples. These relationships form the archaeological context.

Stratigraphy—the sequence and physical relationship of deposits—can show whether remains were laid down before or after a floor or other feature, or whether a pit containing them cut through an earlier deposit. That can help establish how the remains relate to the building’s use and alteration. The apparent age of the house, by itself, does not date the bones.

Keeping samples linked to their precise find contexts is essential: a laboratory result is only useful for the archaeological question if researchers know what material was tested and how it relates to the burial or deposit. Historic England’s guidance on science and human remains and its archaeological science guidance emphasize the importance of that relationship. Full excavation can improve both recovery of suitable dating samples and understanding of their context.

What a human osteologist contributes

A human osteologist is a specialist in human skeletal remains. Historic England describes the osteologist’s contribution as relevant throughout a project, from planning and excavation to assessment, analysis, reporting, and archiving. Its 2018 guidance states: “The involvement of a human osteologist is therefore central to the success of an archaeological project involving human remains.”

An osteologist records what is present and how well it has survived, then assesses which observations the evidence supports. Skeletal morphology can help estimate age and sex, while preserved bones may also show signs of disease or trauma. Fragmentation, missing parts, damage, and poor preservation limit the confidence and detail of those assessments. These observations do not, on their own, establish a person’s name or the circumstances of death.

How archaeologists build a date

Dating is a chain of reasoning, not a single test. Archaeologists compare the stratigraphic sequence, the relationship between the remains and any associated finds, and results from suitable scientific samples. Each method answers a somewhat different question, so agreement among independent evidence can make a chronology more secure.

Evidence What it can contribute Key limitation
Stratigraphy and context Relationships among the burial, deposits, and house features; whether one deposit preceded, followed, or cut another. Establishes sequence, not necessarily a precise calendar date.
Associated artifacts A likely period based on the artifact’s type and archaeological context. Suggests a period; association and context must be assessed rather than assumed.
Radiocarbon dating An estimate of the age of once-living material, including suitable human bone. Requires calibration and interpretation; contamination, sample quality, and diet can affect results.
Historical information May help assess a proposed chronology or identity when relevant records exist. Its value depends on whether reliable, relevant evidence survives and connects to the find.
DNA and other biomolecular analyses May address biological kinship, population history, or other specific biological questions. Preservation and contamination are challenges; DNA alone generally does not establish a named identity.

Artifacts and stratigraphic sequence

Artifacts found in a deposit can suggest a period, while stratigraphy helps show how that deposit fits into the sequence of activity at the site. Neither should be treated as a date for the bones without establishing the relationship between the find and the dated material. Where burials or deposits have clear stratigraphic relationships, Bayesian chronological modelling can combine scientific dates with archaeological sequence information to refine a chronology.

Radiocarbon dating and calibration

Radiocarbon dating measures the carbon-14 remaining in material that once exchanged carbon with its surroundings and stopped doing so when the organism died. Historic England’s 2022 explanation notes that living material contains about one carbon-14 atom for every 1 million million carbon atoms. The method estimates elapsed time since death; an uncalibrated radiocarbon age is not itself a calendar date.

Before measurement, samples are pretreated to remove later carbon contamination. Laboratories report a radiocarbon age, which must then be calibrated against an appropriate calibration curve to express it on a calendar timescale. Historic England gives about 50,000 years as an approximate upper range for radiocarbon dating in archaeological guidance, not a guarantee for every specimen: the practical limit depends on the sample and facility.

Radiocarbon can be especially useful for an unaccompanied burial, where there are no artifacts to suggest a period. Where artifacts are present, it can check or improve the resolution of typological dating. Historic England’s detailed dating guidance discusses sample interpretation and the combination of dating evidence.

What can make a radiocarbon result misleading?

Later carbon can contaminate a sample. Burial soil, packaging, conservation treatments, or other sources of carbon introduced after death may affect the measurement, which is one reason sample selection and pretreatment matter.

Diet is another potential complication for human bone. Marine and freshwater foods contain carbon with different radiocarbon histories from terrestrial foods, which can make human remains appear older than a terrestrial sample of the same age. Stable-isotope measurements can help assess dietary contributions, and comparison with suitable contemporary terrestrial material may help evaluate a possible offset. Historic England recommends considering dietary isotope evidence when dating human bone and prefers suitable terrestrial material where available in English archaeology; specialist advice is appropriate.

Historic England’s 2022 guidance gives an example from Eriswell, Suffolk: a human skeleton dated to 1640±20 BP and a horse skeleton dated to 1611±20 BP were statistically consistent, indicating no significant offset for that individual. This is an illustrative case, not a general correction factor that can be applied to other remains.

What DNA can—and cannot—establish

Ancient DNA (aDNA) may help answer questions about biological kinship and population history. It may also provide probabilistic evidence about biological sex when skeletal indicators are insufficient. The answer depends on the specific question, the quality of the sample, and the survival of DNA.

Ancient material can be vulnerable to modern contamination, and DNA preservation varies. Historic England cautions that aDNA analyses are generally not conclusive on their own for personal identification. A proposed named identity is more convincing when archaeological context, historical evidence, osteological observations, radiocarbon dates, and biomolecular analyses support one another. Even then, the conclusion should reflect the strength and limits of the evidence rather than imply certainty that the methods cannot provide.

For the English context, APABE’s Science and the Dead discusses scientific analysis alongside the ethical considerations involved in studying human remains.

Ethics and jurisdiction matter

Excavating, studying, and archiving human remains raises distinct ethical and legal issues. Historic England and APABE provide guidance for England; those sources should not be treated as a universal statement of law or procedure. Anyone dealing with a specific discovery should verify the requirements that apply in the relevant location and consult the appropriate archaeological and legal authorities. Historic England’s Human Remains Advice sets out its England-focused guidance.
