On steep terrain, an approach shoe should hold your heel and midfoot securely and let the forefoot edge with control, without squeezing your toes or causing painful pressure. Leave enough toe room for a comfortable walk and descent. Try the shoe in the socks you plan to wear, then test it on movements like edging—not by applying a universal size-down rule.
What a good approach-shoe fit feels like
Approach shoes bridge hiking footwear and climbing shoes. They are made for the hike to a climbing area and for scrambling, with more toe precision and forefoot stability than ordinary hiking shoes but generally more toe room than rock shoes. That room helps on longer walks and descents; it does not mean the shoe should feel loose on technical ground.
SCARPA’s approach-shoe guidance says the shoe should wrap the foot securely, lock the heel in place and provide forefoot control without pressure points. Arc’teryx similarly recommends a close midfoot fit with a toe box roomy enough for comfortable approaches and downhills, but not so loose that precise scrambling movements suffer. These are useful fit principles, not guarantees that every brand’s last will suit every foot.
- Heel: stays seated rather than lifting or sliding.
- Midfoot: feels held and supported without painful pressure.
- Forefoot: transfers pressure to an edge in a controlled way.
- Toes: have usable room for walking and descents, without excess movement that undermines control.
Approach shoes are not a substitute for climbing shoes on routes requiring extremely precise foot placement, as Arc’teryx notes in its men’s approach-shoe guidance.

How to check fit before choosing a size
A quick shop try-on is only a starting point. Use the socks you expect to wear and test the shoe in ways that resemble your route.
- Put on your intended socks. Sock thickness changes the space inside the shoe, so assess fit with the socks you will actually use.
- Lace for technical terrain. Tighten the shoe as you would for a steep or rocky section. The heel should stay seated and the midfoot should feel secure, without pinching or painful pressure.
- Walk up and down a ramp or stairs. On the descent, check that your toes are not forced into painful contact with the front. Notice whether the heel slides. Mammut’s approach-shoe guide also advises checking for adequate toe space, heel movement and pinching.
- Test edging. Stand on a small edge with the big toe, then with the side of the forefoot. Arc’teryx’s fit checklist recommends checking big-toe edging and the stiffness under the big toe.
- Try other route-relevant moves where safe. Depending on the shoe and terrain, test smearing, jamming, or heel and toe hooks. The movement check helps reveal whether a technical model feels controlled beyond a static standing fit, as described in Climbing.com’s 2026 approach-shoe guide.
- Adjust before rejecting the fit. If the heel lifts, try heel-lock lacing. If pressure points or loss of circulation persist, try another size or last rather than assuming a painful fit is necessary.
How much tighter should approach shoes be?
There is no single size-down rule supported by these fit guides. Climbing.com reports that some wearers choose a half or full size down for a snug performance fit, but says there is no hard-and-fast downsize rule like the one often used for rock shoes. That is an observation about common choices, not a recommendation to size down by a fixed amount.

Choose the compromise around the trip. Long trail approaches favor comfort and toe room; steep, rocky scrambling puts more weight on heel hold and forefoot precision. For a trip that includes both, look for a model whose lacing lets you adjust tension without creating pressure points. AKU’s Dual Fit System, for example, offers a “Comfort Walking” setting for mileage and a “Precise Climbing” setting for technical terrain; this is a brand-specific feature, not a standard found on all approach shoes.
Compare models by more than the size label
Two shoes marked the same size can fit differently. When comparing technical approach shoes, evaluate the actual shape and feel of each model rather than expecting a size conversion to predict performance.

Can approach shoes stretch as they break in?
Construction matters. Arc’teryx’s fit checklist says an unlined leather shoe may stretch up to half a size or more over time; it describes a lined synthetic upper with a tensioned rand as more likely to hold its shape and fit. Treat that as guidance about those constructions, not a promise that every leather shoe will stretch by the same amount.
Do not rely on future stretch to fix a shoe that already causes painful pressure, and do not buy a shoe with a moving heel on the assumption that it will become more secure. Check the fit you have now, and consider the specific upper construction when judging how it may change.
