App Store review happens through App Store Connect: submit a complete, testable app version with the required information, then track its status and respond to Apple’s messages. Apple publishes review-time goals, not a deadline or guarantee for any individual submission.
What Apple reviews
Review is not limited to an app’s binary. Apple says its review process covers apps and updates, as well as associated items such as app bundles, in-app purchases, in-app events, metadata, and other submitted content. Apple’s App Review overview also reports that, on average, over 40% of unresolved issues relate to Guideline 2.1, App Completeness. Apple does not display a publication year for that figure; it is current guidance checked in 2026.

Apple’s App Review Guidelines are worth checking during development, not just after a rejection. Apple identifies crashes and bugs, broken links, and placeholder content as avoidable problems. Make sure the app works as submitted and that its support contact and privacy-policy links are current.
How to submit an app for review
In App Store Connect, a version marked “Ready for Review” has not necessarily been sent to Apple. You must submit it. Apple’s submission instructions describe the process:

- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
- Select the app version and build. Confirm the version is associated with the build you intend Apple to review.
- Complete the required information. Add the required metadata and review details. If the app requires a login, special device settings, or other steps to reach its main features, provide working credentials and clear instructions in App Review Information.
- Add the version to a submission. Add it to an existing draft or create a new submission. Related items may be reviewed together; items submitted together must be accepted for the submission to complete.
- Choose “Submit for Review.” The review process begins after you submit. Apple warns that missing review information can delay or prevent approval.
For a critical-bug expedited review request, Apple says to put the relevant explanation in the submission’s Notes field. For an app associated with an upcoming event, explain the connection and include the event date.
What the statuses mean
Check the submission’s status and messages in App Store Connect. Apple’s status definitions distinguish the main stages:

App Store Connect can show current and past submissions. Apple also documents webhooks for status-change notifications, which developers can use to automate monitoring.
How long App Store review takes
Apple’s timing statements are planning references, not commitments. Its App Review Help page says the goal is to review at least 50% of submissions in less than 24 hours and 90% in less than 48 hours. Apple’s App Review overview separately says that, on average, 90% of submissions are reviewed in less than 24 hours. Both pages are current official guidance checked in 2026 and display no publication year; their figures differ, so they should not be treated as one consistent statistic.

A particular submission may take longer. Apple cites documentation checks, complex or novel issues, and incomplete submissions as reasons for delays. Its published figures do not guarantee when a specific app will be reviewed or approved.
What to do when Apple identifies an issue
Start with the message in App Store Connect. It identifies Apple’s concern and the action needed. Resolve every identified issue before asking Apple to review the submission again.

Do not resubmit the same matter while an appeal is pending: resubmitting starts a new review and closes the appeal. Apple’s App Review overview and submission-status guidance describe the appeal and response process.

Apple allows developers to request expedited review for genuine extenuating circumstances, including a critical bug fix or an app associated with an upcoming event. The app must already have been submitted. Apple evaluates requests subject to availability and demand, so approval is not guaranteed. For event-related requests, include the date and explain how the app is associated with the event; Apple advises scheduling the release ahead when possible. Expedited review is a request, not a substitute for a complete submission. Provide the information Apple needs to evaluate the app even when time is important.
