That does not make it a full Android phone: an app may install yet lose features or fail if it depends on services BB10 does not support.
What “Android on the Passport” means
The Passport’s operating system remains BlackBerry 10 (BB10). BlackBerry documentation describes running repackaged Android application packages (APKs) in BB10—not replacing BB10 with Android. BlackBerry’s SDK terms also describe APK support while warning that some apps rely on unsupported services. BlackBerry SDK License Agreement, Schedule 4
So the practical answer depends on what you mean: some Android apps can run on the Passport, with restrictions; installing Android itself is a separate claim. The cited BlackBerry documentation does not establish an official or supported way to convert a Passport into a native Android phone.
How Android app compatibility works—and where it breaks
BlackBerry’s Passport guide says that while most apps designed for Android smartphones can be installed and opened on BlackBerry devices, some use services that BB10 does not support. BB10 may substitute an alternative service; the guide gives mapping services as an example. A substitute is not a guarantee that the app will behave identically. Compatibility therefore has more than one stage: the APK must be installable, the app must start, and its features must work with the services available in BB10. An app can pass the first two stages but still lack an important function. There is no established compatibility percentage for Passport apps, and the cited documents do not provide a current app-by-app list.
How Android apps were installed on the Passport
The Passport guide documents several historical routes: BlackBerry World, the Amazon Appstore, and third-party websites or mobile market apps. It also describes downloading an APK and opening it from File Manager. These are documented methods, not confirmation that a particular store or download source remains available today.

- Obtain an Android app through a source available to you. Store availability and app availability may have changed since the guide was written.
- If you downloaded an APK file, open File Manager and locate the downloaded file, then open it to install or launch the app as prompted.
- After installation, test the functions you actually need. Successful installation alone does not establish that the app’s services or features work in BB10.
The guide cautions that apps obtained outside BlackBerry World may not have been reviewed by BlackBerry and could put the device and personal data at risk. Be especially careful with APKs from unfamiliar websites or markets; the ability to sideload is not evidence that a file is trustworthy.
Can you install Android OS on a BlackBerry Passport?
Do not confuse Android app compatibility with an Android operating-system conversion. A third-party project page describes an effort to bring Android OS to the Passport, but displays “COMING SOON”; it does not establish a finished, supported release. Android on Passport project homepage

For a working decision, treat the Passport as a BB10 device that may run some Android apps—not as an Android handset. A project announcement or an APK that opens does not demonstrate that the device has native Android, Google services, current Android app support, or ongoing updates.

App compatibility is only one constraint on using an older Passport. BlackBerry’s end-of-life FAQ warned that BB10 devices would no longer reliably function through carrier or Wi-Fi connections after service termination. - Network fit: Check the exact Passport model, your carrier, local supported bands, and whether the network services you need are available where you live.
- App requirements: Check whether the app depends on Google or other services BB10 may not support, and test essential features rather than relying on an install or launch.
- Source and security: Consider whether the app source is trustworthy and whether the device and app receive the updates you need.
- Everyday service needs: Confirm separately that the particular connectivity and services you rely on work; the general end-of-life warning is not a guarantee about present-day availability or emergency calling.
If buying a used or refurbished Passport, verify the precise model, condition, carrier/network compatibility, and seller terms. Buying one is not a route to modern native Android.
