An old Kindle can work as a low-refresh weather display, but this build is a device-specific maker project—not an app you can install on any e-reader. Hemant’s example uses a Kindle Paperwhite 7th Gen, Kindle-side modifications, and a separate server that turns weather data into an image the Kindle can display.

What the Kindle weather display does

The dashboard shows weather information on an e-ink screen by repeating a simple cycle: a server gathers data and renders a Kindle-sized image, then software on the Kindle retrieves and displays that image. The Kindle sleeps between updates rather than keeping a conventional live dashboard on screen.

The project repository lists current temperature and conditions, feels-like temperature, wind speed, humidity, Air Quality Health Index, hourly and daily forecasts, battery level, and active weather alerts. Its author built it around Environment and Climate Change Canada weather data, so readers elsewhere would need an appropriate local data source. The repository describes the project as rough and made for the author’s own use, so expect tinkering rather than polished support: Kindle Weather Dashboard repository.

How the system is assembled

1. Check the exact Kindle model and software

The documented target is a Kindle Paperwhite 7th Gen. The author describes jailbreaking for root access, then installing KUAL and USBNetwork to enable SSH and network access. Hackaday’s February 27, 2025 account also describes that workflow. These steps are not a universal Kindle recipe: check current guidance for the exact model and software state before attempting modifications. Hackaday’s project coverage and the author’s build notes describe this particular setup.

  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

2. Run a separate weather and image server

The server handles the weather data and prepares the screen image; a client on the Kindle requests that image. In the author’s implementation, the server uses Bun/Node.js, Playwright to capture a weather page, Sharp to process the image, and Express to serve it. The repository describes a TypeScript, Express, Playwright, and Sharp stack. Those are implementation choices, not required components for every version of the idea.

3. Match the image to the e-ink screen

The author reports that the Paperwhite 7 framebuffer is 1072 × 1448 pixels and 8-bit grayscale. The build rotates and converts images, using 1448 × 1072 output constants for its rotated layout. These are diagnostics and settings for that device and orientation; another Kindle may have different dimensions or requirements. A mismatched size, orientation, or grayscale conversion can make the result display poorly.

4. Fetch, display, and sleep

The Kindle-side client periodically fetches the image, displays it, and sleeps between updates. The build also reports battery-level monitoring and Wi-Fi reconnection recovery. An optional micro-USB OTG adapter can connect a USB keyboard or drive for tinkering, but it is not needed for ordinary dashboard display; check the connector and OTG compatibility of the specific device.

Maintenance issues to plan for

Ghosting and refreshes

E-ink can retain traces of earlier screens. The author uses mostly partial refreshes and occasional full refreshes to clear artifacts, balancing a cleaner screen against power use. How often a full refresh is needed depends on the display and how its content changes.

Wi-Fi interruptions

Hackaday notes that the Kindle can hang if internet access is lost. Separately, the author reports that Wi-Fi on this Paperwhite 7 could get stuck after network hiccups and describes toggling wireless as a recovery measure. Treat this as a limitation reported for the build, not behavior established for every Kindle.

Sleep and wake scheduling

The author reports that Linux rtcwake did not work as expected with the Kindle’s custom kernel, and describes using the Kindle’s own scheduling mechanism before putting it to sleep. This is a device- and firmware-specific account, not general advice for other Kindle models.

What the reported runtime means

The author says the display updates every three hours and runs for weeks on one charge, with battery and network monitoring while it sleeps between updates. Those are observations from one personal build, not independent benchmarks or a runtime guarantee. The reviewed project article, coverage, and repository do not provide a controlled comparison with a commercial e-ink dashboard.

The practical trade-off is clear: reusing a Kindle avoids needing a dedicated display, but the setup relies on compatible device modifications, a separate weather/image server, and ongoing attention to refresh behavior and connectivity. Whether that is worthwhile depends on the exact Kindle model and firmware, comfort with tinkering, update frequency, and willingness to troubleshoot an unattended device.
