A browser-based RAW editor can keep image processing on your device: the browser reads a local file, a RAW decoder turns sensor data into pixels, and WebGL can render adjustments. But “client-side” alone does not prove that a site never transmits photo data. The exact-title post describes JPEGForce, a project intended to explore browser-native graphics performance, but its detailed implementation and zero-upload behavior could not be verified from the accessible post excerpt.

What is known about JPEGForce

An indexed excerpt identifies JPEGForce as a browser-based RAW editor and frames it as an exploration of how far browser-native graphics performance can be pushed for heavy RAW media. The post is attributed to Krissana_ham and dated September 21, 2026. The full post was not accessible, so its decoder, supported cameras, WebGL pipeline, file-saving behavior, performance, and network behavior are not established. DEV Community

That distinction matters: the title’s “zero server uploads” wording is a claim in the post’s framing, not independently confirmed evidence that JPEGForce sends no image bytes to a server. An app must still download its web code to your browser; the separate privacy question is whether your photo data is transmitted while you use it.

How a client-side RAW editor can be assembled

A typical local-editing pipeline has two distinct jobs: decoding camera data into pixels and displaying or adjusting those pixels. WebGL can accelerate image rendering, but it does not itself decode every camera’s RAW format. These architecture examples come from other projects and should not be read as JPEGForce specifications.

Read a local file and decode it

Obscura documents reading RAW files directly from disk through the File System Access API and using dcraw.js compiled to asm.js. It lists Sony ARW, Canon CR2/CR3, Adobe DNG, Nikon NEF, Pentax PEF, and Fujifilm RAF support. Its documentation recommends Chrome or Edge for its folder workflow, which depends on that browser API. Obscura README

RAW Viewer describes a different fallback chain: LibRaw, then dcraw, then the camera file’s embedded JPEG preview. Its README names LibRaw 0.22.1 for its hosted/server workflow and dcraw 9.26 for file:// use, noting the latter is older. Its documented versions and fallback sequence apply to RAW Viewer, not JPEGForce. RAW Viewer README

Render adjustments and manage resolution

Obscura describes a multipass WebGL2 shader chain for adjustments. It uses half-resolution previews, then decodes at full resolution when zooming beyond 2×. RAW Viewer also describes WebGL2 fragment shaders for adjustments and JPEG export. These examples show how GPU rendering and RAW decoding can be separate stages, with preview resolution affecting responsiveness and detail.

Lumina JS presents another possible architecture: a C++ engine compiled to WebAssembly, on-device decoding and adjustment, and an asynchronous Web Worker API. It uses a proprietary license-key model, so WebAssembly should not be assumed to mean free or open-source software. Lumina JS

What “RAW editing” may mean for image fidelity

A browser preview is not necessarily a full decode of the camera’s sensor data. RawCut says its preview uses the JPEG embedded in the camera file rather than demosaicing the RAW sensor data. That can reduce processing demands, but it is materially different from editing pixels produced by a full RAW decode. RawCut

For any editor, check whether its preview comes from a full demosaic, a reduced-resolution demosaic, or the embedded JPEG. Those approaches differ in fidelity and responsiveness. The available JPEGForce excerpt does not establish which approach it uses.

What to verify before trusting a zero-upload claim

  • Photo-data transmission: Determine whether image content is sent anywhere while editing. Local file access or browser-based rendering is not, on its own, proof of no upload.
  • Local processing versus site requests: A service may process a photo locally while still making other network requests. The evidence available for JPEGForce does not establish its network behavior.
  • RAW support: Look for documented camera formats, decoder versions, and fallback behavior. Support varies by decoder and project.
  • Output and saved state: Check whether edits are saved as browser-local metadata, a sidecar file, or an exported image, and whether the original is changed.

For comparison, Obscura documents sidecar persistence and JPEG export. RAW Viewer describes JPEG export. Those are examples of possible local-editor workflows, not confirmed JPEGForce behavior.

Browser and deployment trade-offs

Local file access is not identical across browsers or deployment modes. Obscura’s folder workflow specifies Chrome or Edge because it relies on the File System Access API. RAW Viewer notes that its threaded LibRaw feature requires shared memory and cross-origin isolation headers (COOP and COEP), and that module workers do not run from file://. These constraints belong to RAW Viewer’s implementation; they illustrate why browser support and hosting requirements need to be checked feature by feature.

For JPEGForce specifically, the accessible information does not establish browser requirements, deployment headers, decoder version, supported formats, export options, or whether photo data ever leaves the device. No performance figures or camera-compatibility claims can be substantiated from the indexed excerpt.
