A MicroPython-capable IDE can make ESP32 development easier by bringing code editing, a device connection, a REPL and file transfer into one workflow. It does not remove the need to choose firmware for the right chip and board, install that firmware the first time, or handle serial and bootloader issues when they arise.
What an ESP32 IDE can simplify
With MicroPython installed, an IDE can reduce the back-and-forth between editing a script, sending it to the board, running it and checking the result in the REPL. Thonny is one example: its documentation describes MicroPython device backends, REPL interaction and working with files stored locally or on the device. In its documented workflow, program text is submitted to the device through the REPL. MicroPython documentation
That convenience is separate from firmware installation. An editor can help you work with a running MicroPython device; you still need to install a compatible firmware image before that workflow is available.
Check the board before choosing firmware
Start with the exact chip and board configuration, not just the label “ESP32.” MicroPython’s supported ESP32 family includes variants such as ESP32-S2, S3, C3, C5, C6 and P4, and capabilities differ between chips. The official tutorial begins with the requirement for a board containing an ESP32 chip and notes that board wiring and its USB-serial converter affect how it connects to a computer. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use the official ESP32 firmware download page to select an image for the board. MicroPython says its generic image suits many ESP32 boards with at least 4 MiB of flash, but this is not a guarantee for every board. Configurations including WROVER/SPIRAM, D2WD, unicore and OTA have their own image options or considerations. Check the board or module specifications before flashing.
Install MicroPython the first time
The initial firmware install is a separate operation from editing and uploading scripts in an IDE. MicroPython’s official instructions use esptool to erase the board’s flash and write the selected binary. For the standard generic ESP32 instructions, the firmware is written at address 0x1000. Follow the exact command and image instructions on the download page for the firmware variant you chose; do not apply the generic address or image to a different configuration without checking its instructions.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Connect the board using its USB or USB-serial interface, then identify the serial port exposed by your operating system. The connector and serial hardware vary by board.
- Download the firmware image that matches the chip and board configuration from the official MicroPython page.
- Use esptool as directed by the firmware page to erase flash and write the image. If automatic port detection fails, specify the correct serial port as described there.
- If flashing fails when using the documented
--baud 460800option, retry without that option.
MicroPython’s download instructions are rolling documentation: the page accessed on 2026-10-04 listed v1.28.0, dated 2026-04-06. Check the page for the current release and the instructions that apply to that image. The ESP32 tutorial also cautions that its development documentation may describe features not available in released firmware. ESP32 firmware downloads
Connect the IDE and use the board
After flashing, configure the IDE to use its MicroPython device backend and select the board’s serial connection. Open the IDE’s REPL and try a simple interaction; a working prompt confirms that the editor can communicate with the device. In Thonny’s documented model, code can be run through the device REPL, and files can be kept on the computer or stored on the board. Thonny

Keep a project copy on your computer as well as any scripts copied to the device. The board is where code runs, but a local copy makes it easier to edit and manage project files independently of the device.
When serial connection or flashing fails
- No serial port appears: Check the board’s connection method, cable and USB-serial interface, then follow the board maker’s setup instructions. The right connection depends on the hardware, so a cable or port recommendation cannot be universal.
- The port appears but flashing cannot start: Check the board documentation for bootloader-entry steps. On boards with a BOOT button, the MicroPython ESP32 port instructions advise holding BOOT (GPIO 0) if the serial port does not enter download mode. MicroPython ESP32 port documentation
- Flashing fails at high baud: Retry without
--baud 460800, as the official firmware page advises. - The board flashes but will not run as expected: Recheck that the image matches the chip and board configuration, then consult the board documentation and the instructions for that firmware release.
Is Thonny the best IDE for ESP32 MicroPython?
Thonny is a documented option for MicroPython work because it supports device backends, REPL use and device-file handling. The available evidence does not establish that it is objectively easier or better than other editors. A practical choice depends on whether you want integrated REPL access and file transfer, how much project-management support you need, how firmware installation fits your workflow, and which editor you already use.
