It works as a remote receiver: place it nearer the devices, connect it to Home Assistant over the network, and its BLE data becomes available alongside data from local Bluetooth adapters.
The “$5” price and claim that it fixed “every” problem describe the headline author’s reported experience, not a verified price or a result guaranteed for other setups. The supported capability is more specific: this approach extends practical BLE coverage, but it does not support Bluetooth Classic or guarantee that every device or connection issue will be solved.
What an ESP32 Bluetooth proxy does
Home Assistant can receive Bluetooth advertisements and, when the device and integration support it, establish active connections through Bluetooth adapters. An ESPHome Bluetooth proxy acts as a remote adapter: it listens near the BLE devices and forwards data over the network to Home Assistant, which can combine proxy data with data from local adapters. See the ESPHome Bluetooth Proxy documentation and Home Assistant Bluetooth integration documentation.
This adds a receiver in a more useful location; it does not increase the transmit power of the sensors or make their radios intrinsically stronger. Its usefulness depends on where the proxy is placed, what the device broadcasts or permits over GATT, and whether the relevant Home Assistant integration supports that device.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check whether your device uses BLE
This solution is for Bluetooth Low Energy, not Bluetooth Classic. Home Assistant states that its Bluetooth integration does not support Classic Bluetooth, and ESPHome says its proxy supports BLE devices and their Home Assistant integrations. If the device is Classic-only, an ESP32 proxy is not the fix.
BLE devices may communicate through periodic advertisements, active GATT connections, or both. Advertisements are often enough for sensors that simply broadcast readings. An integration that needs to read or write GATT characteristics may require an active connection. Check the device’s integration requirements rather than assuming that any Bluetooth device will work through a proxy.

What ESP32 proxies support—and their connection limits
ESPHome describes ESP32 proxies as supporting both BLE advertisements and active GATT connections. Active connections use limited resources: ESPHome’s current documentation sets three connection slots by default. Each configured slot uses about 1 KB of RAM; although the component permits up to nine configured slots, ESPHome recommends staying at or below five to avoid stability and memory problems. A persistent connection occupies a slot, while a short-lived connection frees it when finished. Passive advertisement reception does not use these active-connection slots.
Support varies by platform if you are considering something other than an ESP32. ESPHome lists RP2040/RP2350 as supporting active connections, while BK72xx and LN882x are advertisement-only. Check the current proxy documentation for the platform and behavior you need.

Choose and place the board carefully
Not every development board is equally suitable, and compatibility, antenna design, firmware configuration, and installation steps can vary. Check the current ESPHome Bluetooth proxy project and its Projects page for the exact board before buying or flashing it. The curated proxy repository describes configurations for devices the project has tested and recommends; that does not establish that every ESP32 board performs identically.
- Put it near the devices. The goal is to give BLE devices a nearby receiver. ESPHome advises against placing an ESP node in a rack or close to routers, switches, and other network equipment, and recommends keeping at least three meters away where feasible. Treat that as placement guidance, not a promised range.
- Consider Ethernet. Where practical, Ethernet can offload Wi-Fi traffic from the ESP32 radio and may improve Bluetooth performance. The project catalog includes an Ethernet ESP32 proxy example.
- Consider an external antenna. ESPHome recommends considering a board with an external antenna for best results; the project material notes that an external-antenna variant may provide better range. Neither source gives a numeric range increase.
These choices are trade-offs, not guarantees. A well-placed Wi-Fi board may be more useful than a poorly placed Ethernet board; local interference and the target device still matter.

Flash and connect the proxy
A straightforward route is to select a board configuration from the curated project material and use the ESPHome Projects page to flash it through a browser over USB. The repository also describes over-the-air updates through the device’s update entity. Follow the current board-specific project instructions; do not assume a generic ESP32 image or identical flashing steps apply to every board.
- Confirm the device and board. Establish that the target is BLE and identify whether it needs advertisements only or active GATT access. Verify the exact proxy board and configuration in the current project listing.
- Flash the listed configuration. Use the project’s browser-based USB flow where offered, following the instructions for that board.
- Connect it to the network and place it. Put the proxy within useful reception distance of the target devices, while avoiding close placement beside network equipment. Use Ethernet if the board and installation support it.
- Check Home Assistant’s Bluetooth integration. Confirm that Home Assistant sees the proxy and that the target device’s integration can use the data or connection it provides.
- Update older installations when needed. Home Assistant’s documentation lists ESPHome milestones for proxy features: advertisement listening from 2022.8.2, advertisement bundling from 2023.6.0, one active connection from 2022.9.3, and multiple active connections from 2022.11.0. An older installation may lack behavior your device needs.
Use sensible scan settings
ESPHome recommends default scan parameters for most users. More aggressive settings often add CPU and network load without much benefit; on some PoE devices they may cause overheating, and on Wi-Fi devices they may contribute to Wi-Fi instability. Passive scanning is sufficient for many devices, but active scanning may be needed when initially adding some devices and can increase battery drain. Change scan settings only to address a demonstrated compatibility need, and follow the current ESPHome guidance.

Diagnose a proxy that does not solve the problem
- The device is not discovered: verify that it uses BLE, that its integration supports it, and that the proxy appears in Home Assistant. Move the proxy closer and away from nearby network equipment.
- Advertisements appear but control or data access fails: the integration may require an active GATT connection, or the device may not be supported through that integration. Confirm the required connection behavior and check that the firmware supports it.
- Connections fail intermittently: persistent connections can occupy slots. Review the number of configured active slots and avoid exceeding ESPHome’s recommendation of five.
- Performance worsens after changing scan settings: restore default scan parameters, especially if the device is overheating or Wi-Fi is unstable.
