Yes—an ESP32 can provide wireless connectivity to a Linux computer, including a Raspberry Pi, through Espressif’s ESP-Hosted software. The Pi remains the host; the ESP32 runs companion firmware and communicates with it over a supported bus such as SPI, SDIO, or UART. Whether the setup works on a particular Pi and board depends on the ESP-Hosted variant, hardware connections, firmware, Linux driver, and any platform adaptation required.

How the ESP32 coprocessor arrangement works

The Raspberry Pi or other Linux machine continues to run Linux and the main application. The ESP32 runs Espressif firmware that handles the wireless side, while ESP-Hosted carries messages between the two devices. Espressif documents SPI, SDIO, and UART among the possible host interfaces; the appropriate option depends on the ESP-Hosted variant and the specific chips and boards involved. Espressif’s ESP-AT User Guide describes ESP-Hosted and related connectivity approaches.

This is not simply a matter of plugging any ESP32 board into a Pi over USB. The board must expose a suitable connection, and the firmware, host-side driver, and Linux platform support must align. A USB cable may be useful to program or debug a development board, but that alone does not make USB the coprocessor link.

What Linux sees: ESP-Hosted-NG versus ESP-Hosted-FG

Choose between the Linux-facing ESP-Hosted variants according to the kind of network interface you need Linux to receive. Espressif documents Linux host support for both NG and FG, but they expose different interface types. Espressif’s Linux-driver FAQ notes that Linux platforms not already adapted may require a porting guide.

  • SupportThree Modes: AP, STA, and AP+STA
  • Ultra-Low power consumption, Compatible with Arduino IDE
  • ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications
Variant Interface presented to Linux Documented network modes When it may fit
ESP-Hosted-NG Standard 802.11 Wi-Fi interface Station (STA) and software access point (SoftAP) When Linux or the application needs a Wi-Fi-style interface.
ESP-Hosted-FG 802.3 Ethernet interface Station (STA), SoftAP, and simultaneous STA+SoftAP When the host software is better served by an Ethernet-style interface.

These descriptions establish interface type and supported modes, not a speed or latency ranking. The sources do not provide a benchmark showing that one variant is universally faster or better.

ESP-Hosted-MCU is a separate variant

Espressif names three ESP-Hosted variants: NG, FG, and MCU. The MCU variant is described as an open solution for Espressif chips or modules serving as communication slaves; its initialization includes bus setup and remote procedure call (RPC) handling. It should not be treated as another name for the Linux-facing Wi-Fi interface in NG or Ethernet interface in FG. See Espressif’s ESP-Hosted-MCU overview.

ESP-Hosted or ESP-AT?

ESP-AT is an alternative host-integration model. It uses firmware with an inbuilt TCP/IP stack, buffering, and parseable AT commands, so a host application can issue commands over a serial-style link. ESP-Hosted is the route to investigate when the goal is for Linux to receive a hosted network interface. The exact commands and chip support depend on the selected firmware and target; consult the ESP-AT User Guide for the applicable configuration.

What to check before choosing hardware

  1. Decide what Linux should see. Select NG for a Wi-Fi interface or FG for an Ethernet-style interface, based on the needs of the host application and network stack.
  2. Verify the host platform. Check Espressif’s Linux support and porting information against the exact Pi model, operating system, and kernel. General Linux support does not guarantee that every combination works without adaptation.
  3. Match the bus and board. Confirm that the ESP32 chip or module and development board support the chosen variant and expose the required SPI, SDIO, or UART connections to the host.
  4. Confirm firmware and chip compatibility. Validate the exact ESP32 target and firmware against the chosen ESP-Hosted implementation before wiring or purchasing parts.

An ESP32 development board is a practical category for an initial prototype: Espressif’s setup guidance uses an ESP32 board and USB cable for development, and its ESP-AT guide recommends development boards for early validation. That does not establish compatibility with a specific Pi coprocessor setup; check the board’s exposed bus and variant support. See Espressif’s ESP-IDF Linux/macOS setup guide.

What is not established for every Raspberry Pi setup

Espressif’s documentation supports the architecture and variant-level Linux capabilities, but it does not establish a single current compatibility matrix covering every Raspberry Pi model, Raspberry Pi OS release, kernel, and ESP32 board. Nor does it provide one universal pin-to-pin wiring diagram or a universally recommended board for all combinations. Use the official variant and porting documentation to verify the precise host, operating system and kernel, ESP32 target, and bus before building the link.
