In an idealized flyby, the spacecraft leaves Earth with about the same speed relative to Earth that it had on approach, but traveling in a different direction. Since Earth is moving around the Sun, that directional change can make the spacecraft faster or slower relative to the Sun.
What changes during an Earth flyby?
As the spacecraft approaches Earth, gravity accelerates it, increasing its speed relative to Earth. It reaches its highest Earth-relative speed near closest approach. As it departs, gravity slows it again. In the idealized two-body model, its far-field speed relative to Earth is approximately restored, while its velocity points in a new direction. NASA explains this incoming-and-outgoing comparison in its Basics of Space Flight.
That means a gravity assist does not necessarily leave the spacecraft moving faster relative to Earth. The key change is the direction of its velocity as it exits the encounter.
Why can the spacecraft gain or lose speed around the Sun?
Speed depends on the reference frame. Earth is moving around the Sun, so the spacecraft’s Sun-relative velocity combines Earth’s orbital velocity with the spacecraft’s velocity relative to Earth. When the flyby changes the latter’s direction, it changes the spacecraft’s velocity relative to the Sun too.

Depending on the flyby geometry, the spacecraft can gain or lose heliocentric speed and orbital energy. In a gain, it takes a tiny amount of energy and angular momentum from Earth’s orbital motion; in a loss, the exchange goes the other way. Earth’s change is extremely small compared with the spacecraft’s because Earth is so much more massive. The maneuver does not create energy: the total energy of the Earth-spacecraft system remains conserved. NASA’s explanation of gravity assists describes the transfer between the spacecraft and the moving planet.
A vector view
Imagine the incoming and outgoing Earth-relative velocity arrows as having approximately equal lengths but different directions. The change between those arrows, combined with Earth’s Sun-relative orbital velocity, determines how the spacecraft’s Sun-relative velocity changes. The direction of the bend—not simply the fact that the spacecraft passes close to Earth—determines whether it gains or loses heliocentric speed.

What determines the size and direction of the change?
The flyby’s incoming velocity and geometry determine how much the path bends and where the spacecraft goes afterward. Mission designers account for factors including closest-approach distance and direction, as well as spacecraft speed relative to the planet. A closer pass generally allows a stronger bend, subject to the mission’s trajectory and safety constraints. NASA’s New Horizons press kit describes the role of the approach and closest-approach geometry.
- Incoming velocity: establishes the spacecraft’s motion relative to Earth before the encounter.
- Closest-approach distance: affects how strongly Earth’s gravity deflects the trajectory.
- Direction of the encounter: determines the outgoing direction and whether the Sun-relative energy exchange is a gain or a loss.
Designers choose the geometry to target a desired speed, direction, or orbital plane. A flyby can therefore be useful even when the primary goal is to redirect a spacecraft rather than maximize its speed.

What does a real Earth-assist change look like?
NASA reported that OSIRIS-APEX’s September 2025 Earth gravity assist was expected to change the spacecraft’s velocity in its orbit around the Sun by 15,660 miles per hour (7 kilometers per second) and alter its orbital plane by about 1.5 degrees. Those were mission-specific expected values, not a standard boost or turn for Earth flybys generally. NASA Science’s OSIRIS-APEX mission page gives the mission context.
For an earlier example of using a flyby to redirect a mission, NASA said the OSIRIS-REx Earth assist would move the spacecraft onto Bennu’s orbital plane. The mission’s principal investigator, Dante Lauretta of the University of Arizona, Tucson, described it as using Earth’s gravity to make that change instead of expending fuel. NASA’s 2017 OSIRIS-REx announcement covers that maneuver.

How to interpret “speed increase” in a flyby
Whenever a gravity-assist description says a spacecraft “speeds up” or “slows down,” check which frame it means. The spacecraft accelerates toward Earth and decelerates away from it in the Earth-relative picture. Far from Earth, the idealized incoming and outgoing Earth-relative speeds are about equal; the Sun-relative speed may change because Earth is moving and the spacecraft has been redirected.
