Amazon recommendations can reflect what you search for, what you have viewed or bought, and details about the products themselves. Prices, meanwhile, can change because a Marketplace seller changed its offer, Amazon Retail adjusted its price, a different seller’s offer became featured, or a promotion affected the amount shown. These are separate systems: public information does not establish that Amazon changes an item’s price for an individual shopper based on that shopper’s browsing history.
How Amazon chooses products to recommend
There is no single public formula that explains every recommendation on Amazon. The signals can vary by surface, country, product category, and placement. Amazon’s disclosures describe a mix of a shopper’s activity, the current query, and product information.
Personalization uses activity and preferences
Amazon says recommendations and personalized deals can take account of customer preferences and shopping activity. Its EU disclosures describe activity such as viewing products, adding them to a cart, and making purchases; recent activity may inform later recommendations. Amazon has also described using searches, browsing, and purchase history to tailor how product features are presented. These disclosures explain possible inputs, not a guarantee that every recommendation uses every signal.
Amazon has described a generative-AI system that can reorder product-description details to emphasize a feature relevant to a shopper. For example, if searches suggest a shopper cares about gluten-free products, the system may bring that attribute forward. Amazon says a separate evaluator model checks the generated result. That is an example of personalized presentation, not evidence that the shopper receives a different price.

Search matching and ranking are different steps
In its 2025 EU compliance report, Amazon describes search as two stages. First, a matching process identifies products that fit the shopper’s intent. Then ranking models order those matches. Amazon says the ranking can use past customer actions and product details such as title, price, and description, and that it may use different models for different product categories.
Amazon’s report says these ranking models do not distinguish whether a product is sold by Amazon Retail or a Marketplace seller, whether it is an Amazon brand, or whether the seller uses Fulfillment by Amazon. It also describes a short-lived adjustment that can surface some new products before they have accumulated shopping-behavior data. These are disclosures about the EU Store, not a complete account of every Amazon market or placement. Amazon does not publish the model weights or a reproducible formula.

Why the price shown on a product page can change
A product page can show a featured offer, but that offer is not the only possible source of a price change. Multiple sellers may offer the same product with different prices, shipping fees, delivery estimates, and return terms. Amazon says offers compete to become featured based on criteria including total price with delivery, delivery speed, customer-service track record, and reliability in meeting delivery promises. Other offers can be viewed from the product page.
Marketplace sellers set their own prices
Amazon says third-party Marketplace sellers set their own offer prices. Sellers may also choose Amazon’s automated pricing tools, which can apply rules based on demand or competing prices. A seller changing its price can therefore change the amount shown for that seller’s offer without any change to the product itself.

Amazon Retail can adjust its prices
Amazon says it compares its retail prices with prices at competing online and physical stores as part of its low-price approach. This explains one possible reason an Amazon Retail offer may change; it does not establish that every price movement is caused by a competitor or that a particular item’s price changed for that reason.
A different offer may become featured
The featured offer can change when another seller’s offer wins that placement. The displayed price may therefore move even if the product and an individual seller’s price have not changed. Open the other buying options to see which seller is offering the item and compare the full delivered cost and terms.

Promotions and reference prices affect the comparison
A promotion may temporarily reduce the amount paid. A crossed-out price or “Was” label is a reference point, not proof that customers recently paid that amount. Amazon describes Typical or Was Price as a reference derived from recent prices paid on Amazon; it describes List Price as a validated manufacturer-recommended price. Amazon notes that its reference-price methodology can change, so treat those labels as context rather than a substitute for dated price history.
How to check whether a price is a good deal
- Open the item’s price history. Look for the price-history link near the product price, or ask Alexa for Shopping, “What’s the price history?” Amazon’s feature page describes 30-, 90-, and 365-day views. Availability varies by market, and the 365-day rollout is staged; check what your local Amazon store currently offers.
- Compare the current price with dated prices. Amazon’s price-history prompts include “Has this item been on sale in the past 30 days?” and “Is this the lowest price recently?” A recent transaction history is more useful for judging a deal than a comparison with List Price alone.
- Inspect other buying options. Compare total delivered price, including shipping, delivery timing, seller service history, delivery reliability, and return policy. The lowest item price may not be the best offer if delivery costs or terms differ.
- Separate the offer from the reference label. Check whether the price is a temporary promotion, a particular seller’s offer, or the featured offer. Do not assume a crossed-out or “Was” amount represents a price you would otherwise have paid recently.
What public information cannot tell you
Amazon’s public descriptions explain broad recommendation and pricing mechanisms, but they do not reveal every signal or how much weight it receives. They also cannot establish why a particular product’s price changed at a particular time. To investigate an individual change, compare dated price history and current offers; a definitive explanation may require information from the seller or Amazon that is not public.

Amazon reported that more than 50 million customers had used its price-history feature since its 2024 launch, according to a 2026 company statement. That is Amazon’s reported usage figure, not an independent measurement. Amazon also reported a catalog of more than 300 million products in 2024 while describing its AI personalization features.
