Before releasing it, Amazon says the aircraft checks that the landing area is clear. Availability, fees, delivery estimates, and weather can all affect whether the option appears.
1. Amazon checks whether your address and order qualify
Prime Air is not available simply because a ZIP code is listed as served. Amazon says eligibility is checked for the specific address and order, and some addresses in a covered ZIP code may not qualify. In the US, the service overview lists 11 sites across 10 metro areas, with an approximate service area of 175 square miles per site; Amazon says the footprint is expanding, so those figures may change. See Amazon’s current US Prime Air overview for its coverage information.
Amazon says nearly all items weighing 5 pounds or less that fit in a large shoebox may qualify. The company characterizes this as more than 60% of the items customers most frequently purchase; that is Amazon’s description, not an independent measurement of the full catalog. An item still has to be eligible for your address and the service at the time you order.
For US orders, Amazon’s overview currently lists free drone delivery for Prime members on orders of $50 or more, a $2.99 fee for Prime orders under $50, and a $4.99 fee for non-Prime customers. These are changeable terms; check the amount shown at checkout for your order.

2. You select a delivery point at checkout
If the option is available, Amazon presents drone delivery alongside the normal shopping and checkout choices. For a first drone order, the customer confirms a preferred delivery point; Amazon says it can be retained for later orders or changed. In Darlington, UK, Amazon describes customers choosing from delivery zones shown on a satellite map. That account is specific to that site, rather than a promise that every location uses the same map or interface.
Amazon says the delivery points are identified digitally using maps and AI systems. Its 2025 description of the updated process says the system verifies the package and its location without the older physical QR-code step.

3. The fulfillment site prepares the package and aircraft
Amazon’s account of operations at its Darlington, UK, site describes a robotics unit bringing the item to an associate, who packs it in custom Prime Air packaging. An associate checks the aircraft, installs a charged battery, and loads the package into a compartment beneath it. When checks are complete, the aircraft is taken to the launch pad. This is a site-specific account; equipment and steps may differ at other locations. Read Amazon’s Darlington account for that workflow.
Amazon identifies the MK30 as the aircraft used for deliveries in that UK account. The company describes it as roughly five feet tall, with a wingspan of about five and a half feet and capacity for packages up to five pounds. Amazon says the MK30 takes off and lands vertically, then flies horizontally while travelling.

4. Amazon plans the route and monitors conditions
Amazon says its US routes operate at altitudes between 115 and 400 feet. In its explanation, onboard cameras and radar assess people, animals, obstacles, terrain, and vegetation along the route. The company says a Safe Contingent Landing may be triggered by unexpected weather, a cell-tower outage, emergency air traffic, or rare multiple system failures. If the planned destination is blocked, the system may seek another landing spot; Amazon says a trained team recovers an aircraft that lands away from its site. These are Amazon’s descriptions of its operating system, not an independent account of performance.
Weather can make the service unavailable before checkout or affect a mission after planning. Amazon says the MK30 can fly in light rain, but not in every weather condition. Its Darlington account describes a forward-looking weather service covering 75 minutes that helps determine whether drone delivery should be offered for the next hour. Heavy rain, high winds, or poor visibility can cause the option to disappear at checkout. Amazon puts it plainly: “Prime Air won’t accept deliveries in all weather conditions.” See Amazon’s explanation of weather and drone delivery.

As the drone approaches the selected point, Amazon says it descends to approximately 13 feet and checks for people, pets, or vehicles before releasing the package. The company says its perception systems can detect obstacles that are not represented in satellite imagery. If the location is occupied or otherwise unsuitable, the drone may not make the planned drop.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. The package is released and the aircraft returns

What Amazon’s safety figures do—and do not—show
Amazon reports that the MK30 completed 1,070 flight hours across more than 6,300 flights during testing. The company also describes testing obstacles and aircraft-conflict scenarios, including detect-and-avoid trials. These are company-reported test counts and practices; they are not independent safety-rate data or a guarantee about an individual delivery. Amazon’s safety-testing account explains the tests it describes.
Amazon says Prime Air holds FAA Part 135 certification and that FAA approval for the MK30 included beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations using onboard detect-and-avoid technology. For detailed claims about the current authorization terms or limits, consult FAA records; Amazon’s overview is not a substitute for the regulator’s documentation.
What to check before choosing drone delivery
- Confirm that the option appears for your exact address and eligible item; a service-area ZIP code alone is not sufficient.
- Review the delivery point, estimated arrival window, and fee shown in checkout.
- Remember that the availability of the option can change with weather and operating conditions.
- Consider whether the selected delivery point is appropriate for a package to be released there.
Amazon says eligible US deliveries can arrive as fast as 30 minutes, with most arriving around 60 minutes after checkout. These are company-reported estimates, not a guaranteed delivery window; rely on the estimate presented for the specific order.
