Active Noise Cancellation reduces outside noise, Transparency mode lets it in, and Adaptive Audio automatically varies the balance between the two. Choose ANC for quieter listening, Transparency when you want to hear your surroundings, or Adaptive Audio when conditions change and you would rather not switch modes yourself.
How are AirPods noise cancellation, Transparency mode, and Adaptive Audio different?

ANC is noise reduction, not a guarantee of silence. Apple says outward-facing microphones detect external sounds, while an inward-facing microphone listens for unwanted sounds inside the ear; AirPods counter detected sounds with anti-noise. A good fit matters for ANC and Transparency to work best. Apple’s listening-mode overview explains the modes and fit guidance.
Transparency is the deliberate opposite of blocking outside sound: it lets that sound through so you can hear your surroundings. Adaptive Audio is not a third fixed level. It combines noise cancellation and environmental sound, responding to changing conditions. Apple’s Adaptive Audio guide also describes how to adjust the amount of ambient sound allowed.
When should you use Transparency mode?
Use Transparency when hearing nearby sound is important—for example, when you need to stay aware of activity around you while wearing your AirPods. It is the mode to choose when environmental awareness matters more than reducing outside noise.

What does Adaptive Audio do?
Adaptive Audio changes the balance between cancellation and outside sound in response to your environment. If you want its automatic adjustment but prefer to hear more or less ambient sound, adjust the Adaptive setting where available. Apple describes the precise setting presentation as dependent on software version, so its appearance may differ between devices.
How Adaptive Audio differs from other automatic features
Adaptive Audio changes how much environmental sound you hear. Two related features affect media playback instead:

- Personalized Volume adjusts media volume based on environmental conditions and your volume preferences over time.
- Conversation Awareness lowers media volume and enhances voices in front of you when you start speaking. Apple says it restores the volume and original listening mode after the conversation.
These features address different things: Adaptive Audio balances outside sound and noise cancellation, while Personalized Volume and Conversation Awareness change media playback behavior. Details are in Apple’s Adaptive Audio guide.
Which AirPods support Adaptive Audio?
Apple’s current support documentation lists these models for Adaptive Audio: AirPods 4 (ANC), AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2. The current modes overview also lists AirPods Pro 1 and AirPods Max 1 for ANC and Transparency. Check Apple’s listening-mode overview for its current model list; available options can depend on the AirPods model, compatible device, operating system, and firmware. If a mode is missing, check the settings for your specific model and confirm its software is compatible.

For example, Apple lists ANC, Transparency, and Adaptive Audio on AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. Do not assume every AirPods model offers all three modes.

- Wear and connect your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Control Center.
- Touch and hold the volume control.
- Choose Listening Mode, then select ANC, Transparency, or Adaptive Audio if your model supports it.
- To tune Adaptive Audio, use its ambient-sound adjustment when it appears.
Apple also documents changing modes using AirPods controls and through Mac settings or Control Center. Exact labels and the Adaptive adjustment can vary with software version. See Apple’s modes overview and Adaptive Audio guide for current instructions.
