AI is prompting some students to reconsider their career plans, while others see AI skills as a way to improve their prospects. The evidence points to a mix of concern, curiosity and practical interest—not a settled list of careers that are safe or doomed.
How is AI affecting students’ career plans?
In a 2026 UK survey, 13% of respondents said they had changed their career plans because of AI, and one in three had considered doing so. Curiosity was the most common reaction, named by 34%, followed by anxiety at 27%. The survey included 710 Prospects.ac.uk users surveyed from November 10 to December 4, 2025; half were university students and roughly a third were in school, sixth form or college. A separate 2025 CFA Institute survey found that 67% of respondents feared AI could harm their career ambitions or make finding a job harder, while 40% believed AI competencies could significantly improve their job-market prospects. It surveyed 9,023 people aged 18–25 across 11 markets who were studying for a bachelor’s degree or higher, or had graduated within the previous three years. The survey focused on graduate outlook and financial services, so its figures should not be treated as a measure of all students worldwide. CFA Institute
These results capture reported attitudes and plans, not proof that AI has already eliminated jobs or that a particular career will grow. They also come from different populations and survey designs, so the percentages should not be compared as if they describe the same group.

Do students in different fields see different risks?
Yes. In a 2025 U.S. ACT survey, students aspiring to study arts reported greater concern about AI than students planning several technical and health fields. That finding describes differences in this sample’s views; it does not establish that arts careers face a certain outcome or that technical and health careers are protected.
The ACT survey gathered online responses from 3,816 Grade 9–12 students registered for the December 2024 ACT national test, selected from a sampling frame of 81,689 registrants. Sixty percent agreed that knowing how to use AI would help prepare them for a college major or degree program. ACT also reported more positive views among students with more AI training, but that association alone does not show that training caused the difference. ACT

What skills can help students prepare?
The survey evidence suggests that preparation is not simply a matter of learning to use a chatbot. Students can build a mix of practical AI competence, responsible judgment and capabilities grounded in their chosen field. These can make a student better prepared to work with changing tools, but the evidence does not guarantee a job or protect any career from automation.
- Learn to use AI practically. Try relevant tools for tasks in a course or intended field, and learn to check their output rather than accept it automatically. In ACT’s U.S. high-school sample, 60% said knowing how to use AI would help prepare them for a college major or degree.
- Understand ethical use. Consider privacy, bias, attribution and when disclosure is appropriate. In a study involving students at two UK universities, 66.9% rated ethical AI use as important to their future careers. The survey ran from October 3, 2023, to January 15, 2024; its participants do not represent all students. Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence
- Build field knowledge and judgment. Learn how work is done in the intended profession, then practice evaluating whether an AI result is accurate, useful and appropriate for the situation. CFA Institute’s senior director of university programs, Peter Watkins, said, “Those able to combine technical competence with sound analytical judgement will be well placed to succeed in a changing world of work.”
- Keep communication and collaboration strong. Most real work involves explaining decisions, understanding people’s needs and coordinating with others. AI familiarity is one part of preparation, not a substitute for the broader capabilities a field requires.
Career guidance matters, too. Jisc’s 2025 account of student conversations describes employability as a major concern and reports that students want clear, fair and practical support. Its conversations took place between June 2024 and May 2025. Jisc

Will AI take away jobs in a student’s field?
These student surveys cannot answer that for an individual career. They measure perceptions and stated intentions, not the future number of jobs or the pace at which employers will change specific tasks. A more useful question is which tasks in a field may change, which still require human expertise, and what people entering that field will need to know.
Employer expectations offer one limited snapshot, not a forecast of actual outcomes. In responses from 30 member organisations surveyed by the Institute of Student Employers between November 19, 2025, and January 9, 2026, 53% expected entry-level hiring to remain stable over the next three years and 17% anticipated reductions. Broader labor-market context also needs careful interpretation. The OECD’s analysis of PISA 2022 data, published in 2025, examines gaps between teenagers’ career expectations, education plans and labor-market demand; it does not establish that AI caused those patterns. Its findings are useful for thinking about career preparation, not for predicting whether a particular student’s major will lead to a job. OECD

No source here establishes a definitive “AI-proof” career list, and no career should be promised as safe. The effect of AI depends on the tasks involved, how employers adopt tools and how work changes. Even within one occupation, some tasks may be automated or assisted while others continue to depend on expertise, accountability and human interaction.

Students can make the question more actionable by examining examples of day-to-day work in their intended field, asking educators and practitioners how tools are being used, and checking current guidance as they make course or career decisions. This approach supports informed exploration without treating present-day survey sentiment as a prediction of future employment.
