AI is changing parts of game testing, especially playtesting and balancing, but the available survey evidence does not show that it has replaced human QA or consistently outperformed traditional testing. The practical shift is toward adding AI-driven tools to existing automation and human review—not abandoning the testing playbook altogether.
What the evidence says is changing
In a 2025 survey commissioned by Google Cloud and conducted by The Harris Poll, 90% of 615 game developers surveyed said they already used AI in their work. Respondents were in the United States, South Korea, Finland, Norway, and Sweden, and were surveyed online from June 20 to July 9, 2025. That result describes this five-country sample, not every game developer. The report presents AI as support for repetitive tasks and creative or technical work, including testing-related uses. Read the Google Cloud and Harris Poll report.
Playtesting and balancing
In that survey, 47% of respondents said AI was speeding up playtesting and balancing. This is a reported perception of faster work, not a controlled measurement of testing speed, defect detection, or game quality. The report also describes automated testing and bug reporting by agents, but that does not establish that an AI system can reliably find every issue or decide which findings matter most.
Development support around QA
Testing is part of a wider shift in development workflows: 44% of the same respondents cited AI for code generation and scripting support. Such uses can affect how quickly teams build and revise game features, and therefore how often they need to test them. The survey does not quantify how code-generation use changes the amount or quality of QA.

AI is being added to existing automation
AI did not invent automated game testing. modl.ai’s February 2025 report describes non-AI automation as already widely used, while its surveyed developers saw potential in AI for faster bug detection, automated bug reporting, and continuous testing. Unity’s 2025 Gaming Report search-result summary also points to increased AI use for automated playtesting and code improvement, but that is only a directional cross-check, not a detailed benchmark. See modl.ai’s State of Games QA report and Unity’s 2025 Gaming Report.
What AI playtesting tools can—and cannot—tell a team
AI-assisted testing can help teams run or support parts of a test workflow, such as playtesting, bug reporting, or repeated checks. The survey findings indicate that developers perceive value in some of these tasks, but they do not provide comparable, independent measurements of tool accuracy or performance.

A test result still has to be reproducible, relevant to the intended player experience, and prioritized against other issues. A tool’s report is an input for the QA process, not automatically a verified defect or a judgment about whether a game is ready to ship. Human testers remain important for reviewing results and applying context; modl.ai CEO and co-founder Christoffer Holmgård put the vendor’s view this way: “AI complements human expertise; it doesn’t replace it. QA processes are an integral part of game development, so as you start using AI, the tools will have to focus on human-AI collaboration.”
Will AI replace game QA testers?
The cited reports do not establish that AI has caused QA layoffs, reduced staffing, or replaced testers. They measure reported adoption, perceived usefulness, readiness, and expectations—not workforce outcomes or causal effects. In modl.ai’s survey of more than 300 US developers, 94% said they believed AI would play an important role in the future of game QA. That is a forecast from respondents, not proof of what will happen.

The same survey points to capacity pressure: 77% of respondents said their most recent release had less QA than they thought it should have. This is a vendor-published, self-reported result from its US sample, not an industry-wide measurement. It suggests why teams may be interested in automation, but it does not show that AI has resolved the shortfall.
What can slow AI adoption in QA?
Readiness is not the same as successful implementation. In modl.ai’s survey, 87% of respondents said their studios were at least somewhat ready to implement AI in QA, but only 18% felt fully prepared. The report cites setup complexity, high costs, and resistance to change as common obstacles. Google Cloud and The Harris Poll also report concerns about data ownership and privacy, as well as costs and difficulty measuring implementation success.

These concerns matter because a tool can add work rather than save it if it is difficult to configure, produces hard-to-verify findings, or creates uncertainty about how game data and intellectual property are handled. The surveys identify these as concerns and obstacles; they do not rank them consistently across all studios or tools.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to evaluate an AI game-testing tool
There are no comparable head-to-head benchmarks in the cited sources, so treat tool selection as a fit-and-evidence question rather than assuming that an AI label guarantees better QA. A limited pilot with a defined measure of success is a practical way to assess fit, especially given reported difficulty measuring results. Keep human review in the loop and decide in advance what evidence would justify broader use.

- Report quality: Determine whether findings are reproducible, clear enough to investigate, and useful for prioritizing fixes.
- Setup and operating effort: Account for configuration, integration, ongoing maintenance, and the time people need to review results.
- Cost and measurement: Compare the full cost with a specific intended benefit, such as time spent on a defined testing task. Do not treat perceived speed as proof of improved coverage or quality.
- Data and intellectual property: Establish how game builds, test data, and other studio information are handled before connecting a tool to development workflows.
- Human oversight: Decide who validates findings, distinguishes actionable defects from noise, and makes release decisions.
In a pilot, compare the tool’s output with the team’s existing process on a bounded task and record both useful findings and review effort. Expand only if the results are credible and the workflow fits the team’s needs.
