AI household assistants can process voice requests, transcripts, account or voice profiles, and connected-home activity; some features also use camera history or household context. What is stored, how long it remains, whether it may be reviewed or used to improve AI, and who in the home can access it depend on the service, settings, account, and feature. A shared speaker is not a single household-wide privacy setting: check each person’s account, shared-home permissions, connected services, child controls, and the device’s microphone control.
What can Alexa, Google Home, or Siri hear or remember about my family?
These assistants do not process only the sound of a spoken request. Depending on the platform and feature, records can include audio, text transcripts, typed requests, voice or account context, smart-home device status, and information used to carry out requests. Third-party skills and apps may receive request content, while a connected-device maker may hold its own records.
Activation is not infallible. Google says Gemini for Home waits in standby for an activation signal, but a sound resembling “Hey Google” or an unintended manual activation can also trigger a request to be sent to Google’s servers. An activation indicator can help show when an Echo detects its wake word, but it does not answer what history is retained afterward.

For a family, the key distinction is between what the assistant processes and who can invoke or see a feature. Voice recognition or home membership may tailor access, but do not assume they prevent every guest or household member from using a shared device or seeing information displayed on it.

What Google Home and Nest may process
Google’s Home and Nest privacy disclosure for Gemini for Home says activity may include audio and video content, interactions and saved information, automation data, feedback, and usage data. Google says this information is used to provide, maintain, and improve home services and protect Google, users, and the public; its disclosure also includes training generative AI models. The precise features available can vary with device, rollout, account, and settings. Google Home and Nest Privacy Hub
Google says Home History is on by default for most users and has an 18-month default retention period for eligible Gemini for Home history; users can turn it off or change it. Google also says human reviewers may read, annotate, and process interactions to improve quality. Its stated safeguards distinguish that activity from video footage, audio recordings, or personally identifiable information: those are not shared with reviewers or used to improve models unless the user separately consents for that purpose.
Guests can also activate devices. Google says it processes unidentified guests’ interactions, including voice commands, to provide the service and temporarily stores text transcripts for technical support; it says guest audio recordings and transcripts are not used to train its AI models. On compatible smart displays, household members with Voice Match may be able to search or view compatible camera and doorbell video history, depending on subscription and settings. That makes home membership, recognition profiles, and screen placement relevant access controls—not just account-history settings.

What Alexa and Echo may process
Amazon says an Echo gives a visual or audible indication when it detects its wake word and records audio to stream to the cloud. Alexa history can include recordings, transcripts, and typed requests. Account holders can review and delete these records, choose automatic deletion after three or 18 months, or choose not to save voice recordings. Amazon cautions that deleting recordings can affect personalization and features, including Voice ID. Amazon’s Alexa device FAQ
Smart-home activity can create a separate record from voice history. Amazon says Alexa may receive a thermostat setting when someone changes it manually, and may retain device status and usage history to personalize responses and support Hunches, Routines, and Away Lighting. Users can delete or automatically delete some smart-home status and usage information after three or 18 months. That does not necessarily erase associated information such as a device’s type or name, voice requests, aggregated patterns, or records held separately by the device manufacturer.
Amazon Kids on Alexa handles child interactions differently from an assumption of “no data.” Amazon says it retains recordings, transcripts, and typed requests so parents can review interactions and to answer requests. Parents can review or delete recordings and ask Amazon to delete a child’s profile and associated personal information. When a child uses a third-party kid skill, Amazon says it provides request content, but not the voice recording, so the skill can respond. Amazon Kids privacy information

What Siri and HomePod may process
Apple says Siri context can include contact names and relationships, music and podcast preferences, family device names, Home app homes and accessories, shared-home members, and labels such as photo people or reminder-list names. Apple says this context and Siri transcripts are associated with a random device-generated identifier, rather than an Apple Account or email address, to determine whether Siri understood and to improve recognition. Apple says it does not use this information to build a marketing profile and never sells it. Apple’s Siri, Dictation & Privacy disclosure
Apple separately describes Siri Suggestions, which learns through on-device processing using information such as browsing history, email, messages, images, notifications, and contacts; Apple says suggestions are not stored on its servers or shared with third-party apps. Apple also says Siri transcripts may be used to fine-tune Siri and other named models and that it may review a subset. Its disclosure says a small reviewed subset may be kept beyond two years for ongoing improvement. When Siri acts through a third-party app, that app’s own terms and privacy policy apply.
Siri can be disabled and stored Siri and Dictation history can be deleted. If a user has opted into HomePod Personal Requests, Apple says certain local status information—such as nearby timers, alarms, shared media, and phone-call status—plus device proximity may be shared locally with nearby Apple devices so people can control them with Siri. This is a local household-access behavior distinct from the account-associated transcript practices.

How to compare the privacy choices that matter
There is no source-backed universal winner across these platforms: the meaningful comparison is the configuration and feature the household actually uses. Consider these dimensions when evaluating an existing setup or choosing controls:
| Question | What to check |
|---|---|
| What data is involved? | Audio, transcripts, typed prompts, voice identity, device state, camera history, contacts, and home or automation context. |
| How long is history kept? | Which histories are saved by default, their retention periods, available deletion or auto-deletion controls, and any feature trade-offs. |
| Who can access the home? | Invited members, Voice Match or equivalent profiles, guest access, camera-history permissions, and what shared screens or speakers expose. |
| What happens outside the assistant? | What a skill, app, or connected-device maker receives to fulfill a request, and which provider’s terms govern that exchange. |
| What do controls change? | Whether data can be inspected, exported, deleted, or excluded from history, and which personalized features may stop working. |
| How are children handled? | Child profiles, parental consent, response filters, purchase permissions, skill access, and parent review in the actual account and region. |
Published comparisons should be read within their methods and tested setup, not treated as a ranking for every home. A 2025 peer-reviewed profiling study tested Alexa and other assistants, including commerce-related command queries for Amazon, and discussed limits on how visible user profiling is. A 2026 preprint audit compared Google Home Mini, Alexa, and Siri on usability and privacy-related criteria; its rankings are specific to that study’s framework and setup. 2025 Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies study; 2026 preprint audit

A practical privacy check for a shared home
- Check each person’s account. Review adult and child account settings separately; sharing a speaker does not mean the household shares one set of controls.
- Review home membership. Remove people who no longer need an invitation to the connected home.
- Audit enabled features and integrations. Check Voice Match or equivalent profiles, camera-history access, Personal Requests, third-party skills or apps, shopping, calling, and connected-device permissions.
- Choose history controls deliberately. Review voice and text histories and select deletion or retention settings with the household’s needs and feature trade-offs in mind.
- Set expectations for shared spaces. Explain to children and guests when an assistant may respond, what information not to share aloud, and where the physical microphone control is.
- Recheck after changes. Assistant upgrades and new AI features can alter available controls or practices.
Interface paths and setting availability vary by country, account type, product generation, and software rollout. The linked vendor documentation describes the companies’ stated practices and controls, not a technical audit of every device or a guarantee for every account configuration. Regional law, subscriptions, age, and settings can also affect the experience.
