Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAI coding tools can help developers produce working, readable code, but they can also suggest incorrect, insecure, overly complex, or hard-to-maintain changes. Their effect on code quality depends on the task, tool, developer, and how the output is checked. The practical safeguard is to keep a developer accountable for every change and evaluate quality with tests, review, and project-specific standards—not with speed or acceptance rates alone.
Can AI-generated code reduce code quality?
Yes, it can, but a decline is not inevitable. Studies report different results because they examine different tasks and outcomes. Passing tests on a bounded exercise, for example, does not establish that code will be secure or easy to evolve in a production system.
In a randomized GitHub study, developers with at least five years of experience were assigned Copilot access or no access for a Python web-server task. Among 202 valid submissions, the Copilot group had a 53.2% greater likelihood of passing all ten unit tests. In the same study, blind reviewers gave Copilot-authored code small favorable ratings for readability (3.62%), reliability (2.94%), maintainability (2.47%), and conciseness (4.16%). These are findings from that task and rubric, not a general estimate of production quality. GitHub Customer Research, updated February 6, 2025.
A separate 2026 study examined what happened when developers later had to change code written by someone else. Its first phase found a 30.7% median reduction in completion time, but its downstream manual-evolution phase found no clear overall evidence that AI-assisted code was more efficient to evolve, and no significant overall difference in CodeHealth. The experiment was run in late 2024 and does not test every newer coding-agent workflow. Empirical Software Engineering, 2026.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Productivity findings answer a different question. Three randomized field experiments across 4,867 developers at Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company reported a 26.08% increase in completed tasks (standard error 10.3%); this was a productivity measure, not a code-quality result. Microsoft Research, June 2025.
Why can AI-assisted code create quality problems?
AI-generated code is not automatically defective, but fluent-looking output can still be wrong or a poor fit. Research identifies incorrect output, security vulnerabilities, unnecessary complexity, and maintainability risks as concerns. Treat these as possible failure modes, not as defects present in every generated change.

It may satisfy the prompt but miss the intended behavior
A suggestion can look plausible and compile while mishandling an edge case or misunderstanding a requirement. Compare its behavior with what the feature is meant to do, then test both ordinary and important boundary conditions.
It may not fit the project
Generic code patterns do not necessarily match a codebase’s architecture, conventions, dependencies, or compatibility constraints. Those choices require project context; an assistant’s explanation is not proof that its approach belongs in the system.

It may be accepted without being understood
If developers cannot explain a change’s behavior, dependencies, and failure cases, review can miss issues that matter for security or future maintenance. In a 2025 workplace study, participants’ perceived usefulness and enjoyment rose with sustained use, while views on trustworthiness remained unchanged. The authors recommend scrutiny and critical evaluation of generated output. Microsoft Research, April 2025.
More output can obscure design problems
Producing code faster is not the same as making a sound design. Track completion time separately from correctness, readability, security, and maintainability so that a productivity gain does not conceal a quality trade-off.

How should developers review AI-generated code?
Review the code as you would any consequential contribution: establish what it is supposed to do, inspect the actual diff, run relevant checks, and decide whether the implementation fits the project. Automated checks are useful for enforceable rules; contextual choices still need human judgment. Google Research describes modern code review as including verification that code follows language-specific style guidelines and best practices. Google Research, 2024.
- State the intent. Identify the requirement or bug the change addresses and the expected behavior, including important edge cases.
- Inspect the final diff. Review the code that will actually be merged, not just the assistant’s narrative. Keep changes small enough that a reviewer can see what changed and why.
- Run project checks. Use the existing unit and integration tests, and add targeted cases where the requirement or a boundary condition is not covered. A successful compile or fluent explanation alone does not establish correctness.
- Run mechanical checks. Apply the project’s formatter, linter, and static checks to catch issues covered by its automated rules.
- Evaluate context-dependent decisions. Check architecture fit, dependencies, conventions, security implications, and whether the implementation is unnecessarily complicated.
- Require an accountable developer. The person proposing or accepting the change should be able to explain what it does and where it could fail.
How can a team measure whether AI is helping or hurting?
Compare similar tasks and workflows, and record quality dimensions separately. There is no universal product ranking established by the studies described here: one is specific to Copilot and a bounded Python task, another examines downstream changes to Java code, and the field experiments measure completed work rather than code quality.

| Dimension | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Functional correctness | Required behavior, test results, and defects found during review or after release. |
| Readability | Whether developers can follow the code and spot unclear or inconsistent practices. |
| Maintainability | How readily another developer can modify or extend the change later. |
| Security | Whether the change introduces vulnerabilities or unsafe assumptions. |
| Reviewability | Whether the diff is clear, focused, and supported by an explanation of intent. |
| Human oversight | Whether developers understand the output and critically evaluate it. |
| Productivity | Completion time or throughput, recorded independently rather than used as a quality proxy. |
Track these outcomes over time in your own codebase, grouped by task type and workflow. Useful signals include test failures, review findings, escaped defects, rework, and maintainability indicators. The studies do not establish that any single safeguard guarantees a quantified reduction in AI-related defects across organizations.
What adoption statistics do—and do not—say about quality
The UK Government Digital Service report covers a public-sector trial from November 2024 through February 2025. It collected 424 survey responses from 31 departments. Fifty-eight percent of respondents said they would not want to return to their pre-assistant working conditions, but that is a sentiment measure, not evidence that code quality improved. The report recorded an average 15.8% acceptance rate for suggested GitHub Copilot code lines, while 39% of users said they had committed assistant-suggested code. Neither acceptance nor reported use establishes correctness or maintainability. Government Digital Service, 2025.
